The practice of electroconvulsive therapy without patient consent : a French naturalistic study
International audienceFree and informed consent is essential in care, though it may be impossible to obtain in psychiatry due to the impairment of discernment caused by mental illness. In this context, the law authorizes coerced care, including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a highly effective treatment that can at least partially restore discernment. However, the practice of ECT without consent is poorly documented, as is the question of reassessing consent during ECT. We need to take stock of the situation in order to improve practices

Existence and non-existence results for problems involving nonlocal operator with an asymmetric weight and with a critical
\begin{abstract}Recently, a great attention has been focused on the study of fractional and non-local operators of elliptic type, both forthe pure mathematical research and in view of concrete real-world applications. We are interested to prove existence and non-existense of solutions of a minimizing problem involving fractional Laplacian with weight. We consider the non local minimizing problem on the , with , and \begin{equation}\inf_{\substack{u\in \mathbb{H}_0^s(\Omega) \\ ||u||_{L^{q_s}(\Omega)}=1}}\displaystyle\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}p(x) |(-\Delta)^\frac{s}{2}u(x)|^2dx-\lambda \displaystyle\int_\Omega |u(x)|^2dx, \end{equation} where is a bounded domain in is a given positive weight presenting a global positive minimum p_0 >0 at and is a real constant. The objective of this work is to show that minimizers do not exist for some and . After that, we show some non existence results thanks to a fractional Pohozaev's identity and fractional Hardy inequality.\end{abstract
Computation of dynamic behavior of sound absorbing porous materials using efficient Fourier transform approach
International audienceIn this paper, we propose an efficient FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) based numerical method to determine the acoustical properties of sound absorbing porous materials, including dynamic viscous and thermal permeability, from the pixelized/voxelized microstructure. At the local scale, the governing equations of the two problems are periodic and dynamic generalizations of Stokes and Laplace equations with inertial body terms depending on the excitation frequency ω. To solve the problems in regular grids, the discrete frequency dependent Green's functions of the two problems in Fourier space are obtained using finite difference approximation and used to construct boundary equations for the distribution of force and source terms. The equations can then be solved by iterative solvers for the two cases ω = 0 and ω 0, respectively. Numerical tests for different pixelized and voxelized porous microstructure confirm the good performance and accuracy of the method
International audienceSeveral surveys and excavation operations were carried out on around a hundred hectares on the plateau between the municipalities of Giberville and Colombelles, in an openfield landscape dedicated to intensive cereal agriculture. This geographical area is located on the outskirts of the city of Caen, in Normandy. Many occupations have been excavated on this site: a Roman villa, five Gallic farms and a set of small Early Bronze Age enclosures with associated funerary structures. In one of the largest excavation windows, several distinct systems of slit pits/Schlitzgruben were highlighted. These pits have the particularity of having a very elongated ovoid plan, a significant depth and very slightly flared sides. Two of these systems are recorded in the form of arched lines and another in the form of clusters, in addition to a few scattered pits. Schlitzgruben, from German literally designating a slit pit, is a structure with a length 2 to 5 times greater than its width. Its transverse profile is narrow and more or less deep, depending on the type (V, Y, I profile). Its longitudinal profile is either a regular deep bowl or a W-shaped one, with a less hollow central reserve. Its use as a hunting trap is generally adopted.Added to this is a possible incomplete line highlighted in another diagnostic window and in the stripping process. Following the excavation of all the pits and due to the lack of material, the chrono-cultural attribution is based on a few radiocarbon dates of charcoal discovered at the base of their filling. Despite doubts about some of these dates, the inscription of these systems over the entire duration of the Middle Neolithic seems to be confirmed by the malacological study. A micromorphological study, linked to one of the Schlitzgruben, did not provide any traces of specific developments. Furthermore, a concentration of large windfalls over an area of 1600 m2 in the excavation window would indicate the presence of a dense grove on the edge of the Schlitzgruben systems. The few dates carried out suggest an attribution for two of them to the second part of the Middle Neolithic II and for a last one to the beginning of the Early Bronze Age, testifying to the persistence of a wooded area on this plateau, which seems very bare at this time. A relationship between the presence of a grove and hunting pits is proposed as a hypothesis, possibly in the context of hunting by driving back game.In summary, this paper looks back to the probable function of hunting pits for these structures, which are part of a collective framework over a long period, the systems probably succeeding one another over time. These long, deep and narrow pits are found throughout the national territory but to a much greater extent in the northern half of France. Their function is practically no longer debated and it now seems certain that they are that of hunting pits used for trapping large mammals. They appear at the beginning of the Late Mesolithic, replacing cylindrical pits; their presence increased during the Neolithic. These pits would thus testify to the sometimes significant persistence of the hunting practice among agricultural populations.Firstly, the article will focus on discussing certain issues concerning them. Secondly, the description of the site will highlight the different components of these structures, from their distribution into large organized systems to their own morphology. The dating remains quite incomplete on these pits, dependent on the coals trapped at the base of their filling. They seem here to be confirmed by the malacological analysis, which also specifies their location in or on the edge of a wooded area. The article will conclude with the evolution of these pits on the site during the Middle Neolithic (4600-3400 cal BC) and their place in the heart of a partially anthropized landscape. This article is not intended to summarize all the issues and data concerning Schlitzgruben at the national or even regional level, but rather to offer visibility on a specific site, which delivers several stripped slit pit systems in their entirety.
Hydrological performance of bioretention in field experiments and models: A review from the perspective of design characteristics and local contexts
International audienceBioretention is a widely used countermeasure to address stormwater runoff issues and restore the urban water balance. This review investigated the variety of designs and local contexts covered by earlier studies, as well as the means for assessing the hydrological performance of a bioretention system. It built on the analysis of 75 documents to discuss the adequacy of experimental setups or models for the evaluation of different performance indicators, and to summarise current knowledge regarding the impact of local context or design parameters on the hydrologic functioning of bioretention systems. The current literature was found to only partially cover the potential variety of local contexts or bioretention designs, and to sometimes omit critical information. Studies were for instance concentrated in regions with low seasonal rainfall variability for which limits the potential for investigating drought resilience issues and more generally restricts the applicability of their findings to other climate conditions. Regarding bioretention design, the use of environmental-friendly materials (renewable and local materials) as alternatives to traditional materials (sand, gravel, geotextile), as well as simpler designs with limited inputs of external materials (e.g. limited use of concrete or polymeric materials), remains largely overlooked. Besides, the over representation of lined system in current studies leads to a lack of understanding of the interactions between bioretention and the surrounding soil, despite evidence of their potential impact on the overall performance of bioretention in the case of unlined systems. In the reviewed studies, certain limitations of the most commonly used monitoring and modelling methods were identified. Event-based and short-term approaches made up a large proportion of the modelling and monitoring methods, but they lead to inaccuracies in annual and long-term performance. 1D models gained popularity due to their ease of use, but the simplification of configuration and hydrological processes and thus their influence on performance was rarely discussed
A worldwide aerosol phenomenology: Elemental and organic carbon in PM2.5 and PM10
International audienceElemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), and particulate matter (PM) concentrations in the inhalable (PM10) and fine (PM2.5) size fractions are measured worldwide, albeit with different analytical methods. These measurements from many researchers were collected and analyzed for Africa, America, Asia, and Europe for 2012-2019. EC/PM, OC/PM, and OC/EC ratios were examined based on region, site type, and season to infer potential sources and impacts. These analyses demonstrate that carbonaceous materials are important PM constituents throughout the world. Mean EC/PM ratios were lowest in PM10 in Sahelian Africa and Europe (similar to 0.01), highest (>0.07) in PM2.5 at urban sites in North America, South America, and Japan. Mean OC/PM ratios were lowest in PM10 in the Sahel (similar to 0.06) and in PM2.5 in China and Thailand (0.10), and highest in central and eastern Europe (similar to 0.3) and North America (similar to 0.4). OC/EC ratios were elevated in western and northern Europe, and at regional background sites in North America. EC/PM increased with PM10 in Thailand, while OC/PM increased with higher PM mass in Thailand, India, and North America, highlighting the specific contribution of carbonaceous aerosols to PM pollution in these regions. At European and North American background sites, OC/EC ratios increased with PM mass. Higher OC/EC ratios in dry periods indicate influence of wildfires, prescribed burns, and secondary aerosol formation. Elevated wintertime EC/PM ratios coincide with residential heating in temperate climate zones
