Environmental impact of processed tomato in France and in Turkey

    No full text
International audienceThe FLONUDEP project carried out an environmental LCA « from cradle to grave » of processed tomatoes made in France and Turkey. We compared the environmental impact of tomato sauce made in France with French tomato paste, with that made with Turkish tomato paste. Data have been collected through surveys among a sample of farms (France=4; Turkey=4), processing plants (France= 2; Turkey=4), logistic organization (France=2), 1 supermarket and consumers (n=800), Findings show that French tomato sauce is slightly less impacting than the Turkish one for GHG emissions and human toxicity, whereas results are similar for eutrophication. Critical points are mainly packaging, energy used and steam production at plant level, fertilization and phytosanitary treatments at agricultural level, and finally, consumer behavior (shopping by car) and packaging recycling

Current status and prospective of farmers' unions and syndicates in Egypt

International audienceIn Egypt, farming has traditionally been managed by families, even if the environment in which there were managed is organized and shaped by external decisions. It's only in 1908 that a social reformer, Omar Lofti, proposed a cooperative type of organization aiming at empowering small farmers with less than 5 feddans. However, the cooperative movement has really contributed to agricultural development in Egypt only after the revolution of 1952, when it played the role of parastatal organization. Consequently, around 150000 landless households became owners of small farms (5 feddans each). Yet, these organisations required the direct supervision of the Ministry of the Agriculture and the Agrarian Reform. The situation, first suitable, deteriorated in the mid-1970's. The executive authorities smashed the agricultural cooperative movement through several bureaucratic and security means in order to oppose to the endeavor adopted by the cooperative leaders to have an independent position vis-à-vis the agricultural policies. In the late 1980s, the liberalization of the economy didn't reverse the situation, and there was a tendency to rely more on NGOs rather than on cooperatives, and the authorities prohibited the forming of Unions and Syndicates in the agricultural sector as they feared anti-government collective actions. The revolution of January 2011 has given the population and farmers in particular, the opportunity to regain their own organizational tools: the official banning of unions was eliminated, and some leader farmers were supported to coordinate their efforts by establishing civil society organizations. The motives of the founders and the objectives of these organizations still need to be deeply analysed to check whether Egyptian farmers will be really able to take decisions and shape their own future

Metrics of sustainable diets and food systems. Workshop report

    No full text
International audienceThis first workshop aimed to provide a forum to discuss jointly key questions with regard to indicators of food system sustainability reflecting the various backgrounds and different perspectives. It builds on the expert consultation undertaken through a Delphi process to select candidate indicators. It is expected that the expert panel functions as an expert network which meets on a regular basis. In this context, Bioversity International and CIHEAM-IAMM intend to engage further with the participants, review and test different methods for measuring sustainability that have already been developed, but also to examine different features of sustainability which have not yet been captured sufficiently in existing approaches

Labellisation des huiles d'olive algériennes : contraintes et opportunités du processus ?

    No full text
International audienceThe Algerian olive oil sector is one of the least competitive in the Mediterranean region even if the Algerian olive oil displays some potential assets not valued yet under a geographical indication. Our work aims to answer the question of why and how the labeling process of the Algerian olive oil could meet the low competitiveness of standard products, strong competition on the world market and the demand for differentiation by consumers. Our results showed that the Algerian olive oil by its quality and strong links to the terroir and culture of mountain populations may gain some market share on the oil market by an indication of origin valorization process. Companies’ ability to mobilize rural mountain to value this product appears as a precondition of the labeling process. Reclaiming this heritage and institutional support seems also necessary.
