Essential mineral elements in roe deer: Associations with parasites and immune phenotypes in two contrasting populations
2/3/1International audienceLow levels of essential mineral elements such as cobalt, copper, and iron, in organisms reduce immune function, increasing the chances of parasitic infection. This phenomenon has been demonstrated widely in domestic animals but rarely in wildlife. In this study, we used data from 7-to 9-month-old roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), living in two different populations facing contrasting environmental conditions (Trois-Fontaines and Chizé), to investigate whether the parasitic and immunological statuses could be related to essential element status. Between 2016 and 2019, we collected feces to measure parasite burdens (gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes), blood to measure immunological parameters (globulins and white blood cells), and hair to assess the concentration of 11 essential elements (calcium [Ca], chromium [Cr], cobalt [Co], copper [Cu], iron [Fe], magnesium [Mg], manganese [Mn], potassium [K], molybdenum [Mo], selenium [Se], and zinc [Zn]). The results showed first heterogeneity in the individual phenotypes of the two populations. Roe deer with low body mass hadhigh concentrations of all the essential elements (in particular, Ca, Fe, Cu, K, and Mn), a high parasitic burden, and high concentrations of globulins. An association between high concentrations of essential elements and a high parasite burden was found at the two study sites despite markedly different environmental conditions. A relationship between essential element concentrations and immune parameters was also detected, with more basophils and globulins being associated with high concentrations of essential trace elements (i.e., Ca, Fe, Cu, and, to a lesser extent, Se, Cr, and Zn).These results suggest that young individuals with low body mass and high parasitism may select feeding resources rich in mineral elements, which may improve their ability to control the infestation and/or mitigate the negative consequences of parasites by maintaining immune system functions.</div

International audienceStanding low-field MRI is commonly used in equine orthopedic imaging. The advantages of this MRI system, specifically designed for the distal limbs of horses, include its accessibility, lower cost to the owner compared to high-field MRI, and the absence of the need for general anesthesia. These benefits have contributed to the significant rise in the use of this imaging technique over the past two decades. MRI of the foot provides a more comprehensive assessment of lesions than conventional imaging, allowing for a more precise prognosis in many cases and helping to determine the most appropriate treatment protocol. It facilitates the earlier detection of degenerative navicular bone diseaseand has also become a valuable tool in certain pre-purchase evaluations. As a true diagnostic innovation, MRI has significantly advances our understanding of equine foot pathology. These new insights have influenced the interpretation of radiographic adn ultrasound exams, improving our understanding of their limitations while enhancing the evaluation of certain abnormalities.L'IRM bas champ debout est désormais couramment utilisée en imagerie orthopédique équine.

The thesis focus on calibration methods for X-ray systems. They are used to estimate geometric or physical parameters related to the radiography systems. The methods purpose is to improve glass bottle in-line reconstructions. The reconstruction algorithm produces three-dimensional meshes from which dimensional measurements can be taken. The system geometry consists of one or more sources positioned on one side of the conveyor belt on which the bottles are in translation, and linear detectors on the other side. This is a tomosynthesis geometry (tomography with limited viewing angles) as a large angular range of data is not available. The reconstruction algorithm is built using strong assumptions on the bottles geometry and composition.Geometric and physical parameters must be specified to the algorithm in order to obtain good reconstructions. We propose multiple off-line geometric calibration methods and phantoms for a system composed of a single X-ray source and several linear detectors. These methods rely on the data redundancy generated by the use of a single source. We propose to model X-ray absorption taking into account the mono-material aspect of the glass and the poly-chromatic aspect of the X-rays emitted by the source. The parameters of these models are estimated for different types of glass using experimental data.We propose a geometric self-calibration method based on data consistency conditions. The method estimates speed variations parameters of a translating object in a linogram geometry (the detector is considered as an infinite line and the source moves on a line parallel to the detector). The translation of the object is assumed to be parallel to the detector. We show that it is not possible to estimate the average object velocity in this geometry from the data consistency conditions without a priori information. Finally, we conclude about the results of our methods. At the end of each chapter, we suggest ways of improving our methods and results.

Response of a carnivore community to water management in a semi-arid savanna
3/1International audienceWater is a limiting and important resource for large herbivores in arid and semi-arid ecosystems. Consequently, provision of artificial water is often used to alleviate limited surface water during dry periods. When foraging, large carnivores benefit from herbivore aggregation around water sources. Large carnivore attraction to areas of high water and prey availability is likely to affect smaller carnivores at these sites through competitive interactions. Here, we explore the effect of water management on the structure and the asymmetric interactions of an African carnivore community using data from camera trapping surveys. We used a functional approach based on four ranks driven by species body size (rank 1: African lions, spotted hyaenas; rank 2: leopards, African wild dogs, brown hyaenas, cheetahs; rank 3: African civets, black-backed and side striped jackals, caracals, honey badgers, servals; rank 4: African wildcats, large spotted genets, striped polecats, mongoose species), and performed multispecies occupancy models and activity pattern analyses. Results show that distance to water influences rank marginal occupancy probabilities with first-and third-ranked species more likely to use sites closer to water while we observed the opposite for second-and fourth-ranked species. However, while marginal occupancy patterns could suggest spatial avoidance, conditional occupancy of a given rank depending on another shows a constant and positive effect of the presence of a higher rank on conditional occupancy of its subordinate rank. Additionally, activity pattern analyses showed some shifts in peaks of activity in some subordinate ranks, although independent from water availability. This work shows that provision of artificial water contributes to shaping the structure of carnivore communities, and we encourage managers to account for these findings. Specifically, ensuring heterogeneity in the distances to waterholes across the landscape will favour a higher diversity of carnivores at the landscape scale
