Considering the management of diversity on livestock farms from the perspective of work
1International audienceDiversified farming systems appear to be one means of meeting the sustainability challenges facing livestock farming systems and of facilitating the renewal of future generations of farmers in a context of climatic, economic and social change. However, although work seems to be an essential issue for livestock farms, few studies have explored the impact of on-farm diversity on work. This study aims to fill the gap in our understanding of the various ways in which on-farm diversity affects work. We applied a framework combining six dimensions of work with three forms of on-farm diversity (diversity of management entities, diversity of farming activities, diversity of workers) to six studies that had been conducted previously on livestock farms. Our results highlight a wide range of links between on-farm diversity and work. We show that on-farm diversity affects various dimensions of work in multiple ways, which can be both positive and negative. For example, while there may not be a strict and clear relation between on-farm diversity and workloads, diversity provides flexibility for organizing the distribution of working time. Moreover, on-farm diversity seems to more frequently reinforce the meaning of work for farmers. Our results also show that there are multiple interactions between the six dimensions of work studied. Our study points to the need for a comprehensive approach to understanding the multifaceted and interconnected nature of work dimensions in diversified farming systems. Further research is recommended to explore these relationships more deeply to support sustainable and attractive diversified farming systems
Évaluation des paramètres hémodynamiques et du rapport veine cave caudale/aorte avant et après la péricardiocentèse chez les chiens présentant une tamponnade cardiaque
3International audienceObjectives To evaluate haemodynamic parameters and ultrasonographic measurements of the caudal vena‐cava‐to‐aorta ratio at the splenorenal view in canine cardiac tamponade before and 30 minutes after pericardiocentesis. Materials and Methods Dogs presenting with cardiac tamponade at two veterinary hospitals were included. Triage examination, noninvasive systolic arterial blood pressure, shock index, venous lactatemia and POCUS results were recorded at admission and 30 minutes after pericardiocentesis. Results This prospective observational study included 22 dogs, and all had an increased caudal vena‐cava‐to‐aorta ratio. After pericardiocentesis, there were significant changes in vital signs, including a decrease in the median heart rate by 42.1%, a decrease in the median respiratory rate by 40.1%, and an increase in the median rectal temperature from 37.8°C (range: 35.6 to 39.2) to 38.1°C ( 36.1 to 38.7). In regards of hemodynamic parameters, the median systolic arterial pressure increased significantly by 23.2%, the shock index decreased significantly by 52.8%, the median lactate level decreased significantly from 6.1 mmol/L (1.4 to 14.7) to 3.6 mmol/L (1.1 to 13.6), and the median caudal vena‐cava‐to‐aorta ratio decreased significantly by 37.5%, from 1.76 (1.35 to 2.13) to 1.12 (0.91 to 1.51). Clinical Significance This study demonstrated an increased caudal vena‐cava‐to‐aorta ratio in dogs with cardiac tamponade and a rapid haemodynamic improvement in dogs with cardiac tamponade within 30 minutes of the pericardiocentesis, resulting in excellent short‐term prognosis

International audienceLameness assessment can be complicated and agreement between professionals is often poor. In order to obtain a correct and objective diagnosis, the use of body-mounted inertial sensors is of great interest. They detect movement asymmetry of the head and pelvis when the horse id trotting and software calculations indicate which limb(s) is (are) affected and to what degree. Thanks to these data, the effects of diagnostic local anesthesia on the lameness can be accurately calculated, resulting in a precise percentage of improvement. In conclusion, body-mounted inertial sensors leave no room for subjectivity and allow for the use of precise mathematical parameters to describe lameness.L'évaluation d'une boiterie peut s'avérer compliquée. Pour obtenir un diagnostic correct de manière objective, l'utilisation des capteurs inertiels se montre très intéressante. En effet, ils permettent de détecter les asymétries des mouvements de la tête et du bassin et indiquent, par des calculs, quel membre est atteint et à quel degré. Grâce à ces données, les effets des anesthésies sémiologiques peuvent être calculés avec précision afin de savoir si une amélioration après anesthésie sémiologique est significative ou non. En conclusion, les capteurs inertiels ne laissent pas de place à la subjectivité et permettent d'obtenir des paramètres précis sur la boiterie (présence d'asymétrie de la locomotion au trot)

Toxicological effects assessment for wildlife in the 21st century: Review of current methods and recommendations for a path forward
2/3/1International audienceModel species (e.g., granivorous gamebirds, waterfowl, passerines, domesticated rodents) have been used for decades in guideline laboratory tests to generate survival, growth, and reproductive data for prospective ecological risk assessments (ERAs) for birds and mammals, while officially adopted risk assessment schemes for amphibians and reptiles do not exist. There are recognized shortcomings of current in vivo methods as well as uncertainty around the extent to which species with different life histories (e.g., terrestrial amphibians, reptiles, bats) than these commonly used models are protected by existing ERA frameworks. Approaches other than validating additional animal models for testing are being developed, but the incorporation of such new approach methodologies (NAMs) into risk assessment frameworks will require robust validations against in vivo responses. This takes time, and the ability to extrapolate findings from nonanimal studies to organism‐ and population‐level effects in terrestrial wildlife remains weak. Failure to adequately anticipate and predict hazards could have economic and potentially even legal consequences for regulators and product registrants. In order to be able to use fewer animals or replace them altogether in the long term, vertebrate use and whole organism data will be needed to provide data for NAM validation in the short term. Therefore, it is worth investing resources for potential updates to existing standard test guidelines used in the laboratory as well as addressing the need for clear guidance on the conduct of field studies. Herein, we review the potential for improving standard in vivo test methods and for advancing the use of field studies in wildlife risk assessment, as these tools will be needed in the foreseeable future
