Alternative Organizing: Women’s Strategies of Political Action and Care in the Belarusian Diaspora in Poland, Lithuania, and Georgia

    No full text
International audienceIn the aftermath of the 2020 presidential elections in Belarus and the ensuing political crisis, many women were forced into exile. This article explores how Belarusian women continue their engagement in political, socio-cultural, and socio-economic initiatives abroad, often beyond the traditional frameworks of political participation. Drawing on feminist methodology by locating women’s voices as central to inform this research, ten in-depth interviews with women from diasporas in Poland, Lithuania, and Georgia, and ethnographic observation were conducted in 2022. This research includes community support for both Belarusians and Ukrainians, cultural preservation, assistance to political prisoners and migrants, and educational and humanitarian initiatives. The article argues that women’s work in exile not only sustains diasporic life but also constitutes a meaningful form of resistance that challenges dominant notions of visibility, leadership, and political agency. I suggest operationalising non-mainstream political organizing through the notion of social reproduction, extending it to the public political domain.Po wyborach prezydenckich na Białorusi w 2020 roku i wynikającym z nich kryzysie politycznym wiele kobiet zostało zmuszonych do emigracji. Artykuł analizuje, w jaki sposób Białorusinki kontynuują swoją działalność polityczną, społeczno-kulturową i społeczno-ekonomiczną za granicą, często poza tradycyjnymi ramami uczestnictwa politycznego.

Transition from a fixed fee to a pay-as-you-throw waste tariff scheme : Effectiveness of environmental and accountability appeals

    No full text
International audiencePay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) tariff schemes, in which households pay based on their waste generation, are proposed as solutions to the growing worldwide challenge of municipal solid waste management. However, public acceptance of such schemes remains low. Using a one-factor between-subject experimental survey design with 620 participants, we test the effects of environmental and accountability appeals and of individual characteristics in shaping preferences for a proposed PAYT scheme in Grenoble, France. We find a positive effect of the accountability appeal and no effect of the environmental appeal on preference for the PAYT scheme compared to a fixed-fee scheme. Additional analyses suggest that accountability appeals are particularly effective for individuals with below-median age, above-median income, and at least a master's degree, indicating that policymakers should target younger and educated citizens with these appeals in PAYT campaigns. Future research could test the applicability of these findings in other settings and for other waste-related interventions.<br/

Pre-Registration and Pre-Analysis Plans in Experimental Economics

    No full text
The open science movement has gained significant momentum over the past decade, with pre-registration and the use of pre-analysis plans being central to ongoing debates. Combining observational evidence on trends in adoption with survey data from 519 researchers, this study examines the adoption of pre-registration (potentially but not necessarily including pre-analysis plans) in experimental economics. Pooling statistics from 19 leading journals published between 2017 and 2023, we observe that the number of papers containing a pre-registration grew from seven per year to 190 per year. Our findings indicate that pre-registration has now become mainstream in experimental economics, with two-thirds of respondents expressing favorable views and 86% having pre-registered at least one study. However, opinions are divided on the scope and comprehensiveness of pre-registration, highlighting the need for clearer guidelines. Researchers assign a credibility premium to pre-registered tests, although the exact channels remain to be understood. Our results suggest growing support for open science practices among experimental economists, with demand for professional associations to guide researchers and reviewers on best practices for pre-registration and other open science initiatives

Representative Policy-Makers? A Behavioral Experiment with French Politicians

    No full text
This study leverages an online behavioral experiment to analyze whether politicians’ decisions align with citizens’ preferences over the same issue and whether their decisions align with citizens' decisions within the same decision environment. We recruited 760 local politicians and 655 non-politicians in France to participate as policy-makers in a taxation-redistribution game. In the game, two policy-makers compete to choose a flat tax rate for a group of citizens, who are selected from the French general population and state their preferred tax rate. We manipulate (i) the information provided to policy-makers about citizens’ preferred tax rates and (ii) the incentives associated with applying citizens' preferred tax rate. In all cases, we also measure policy-makers' beliefs regarding citizens' preferences. We observe that policy-makers positively react to the information, but they often deviate from it, which can be mostly explained by their beliefs. Incentivizing responsiveness has no impact on these results. This suggest that politicians tradeoff their own preferences about the policy outcome with an intrinsic motivation to implement citizens' preferences. Finally, we find that politicians believe citizens want lower tax rates and are more confident in their beliefs than non-politicians. Once beliefs are accounted for, we observe little differences between the two samples. Our findings highlight the importance of politicians' beliefs and non-financial motivations as determinants of their decisions

La participation des citoyens aux expérimentations sur les modes de scrutin

    No full text
International audienceIn situ experimentations provide opportunities for exchanges between eesearchers and citizens. This article describes their potential impact on research regarding political studies and voting rules in particular. It comments the citizens perception of these experiments, and which social expectations they raise. It also illustrates two cases for which the active participation of voters made research questions evolve: firstly, the importance of expressive voting for voters, and secondly, the forms and challenges of understanding and explaining voting rules. These cases all uncover the prominence of voters’ agency, and draw attention on the need for scientists’ axiological neutrality in political studies.

Exploring player cocreation dynamics on the gaming platform: Interplay of goal fulfillments, orchestration actions, and platform affordances

    No full text
International audienceUnderstanding player co-creation dynamics on gaming platforms is crucial for fostering engagement and driving innovation in digital marketing. This study investigates these dynamics on the Roblox platform, proposing an integrated framework that connects platform capabilities with player-driven orchestration actions and the pursuit of diverse goals − a model applicable to various digital marketing contexts. We identify three types of gaming platform affordances and three types of developers’ orchestration actions, ultimately shaping co-creation activities in terms of creative and social engagement. Using web crawling and text mining methodologies, we analyze a large, longitudinal dataset from Roblox developers engaged in co-creation projects. We employ three observable metrics to quantify co-creation activities, applying different perspectives including equality-based, effort-based weighted, and specialized measures of creative and social engagement. Our findings confirm the direct effects of platform affordances and orchestration actions on co-creation activities, with post-hoc analyses revealing goal fulfillment as an important antecedent mechanism. To validate our results, we conducted a two-stage survey with 206 experienced Roblox developers, providing additional robustness to our empirical findings. This research advances our understanding of digital co-creation and offers practical implications for designing more engaging and innovative gaming platforms. As gaming and digital marketing converge, particularly in the evolving metaverse landscape, this study underscores the importance of leveraging co-creation dynamics to enhance user engagement and drive platform growth

Leveraging Machine learning and generative AI for content Engagement: An Exploration of drivers for the success of YouTube videos

    No full text
International audienceDigital content creation has exploded in the last decade offering immense opportunities for brands and content creators. However, more research is needed on textual and aural content for determining video success using video analytics. Yet, data collection and analysis in this research context are labor-intensive. This study leveraged Generative AI (GenAI) models to automatically extract video transcripts and extract relevant metrics. We examined over 1055 YouTube videos released between 2021 and 2023 across three popular smartphones. We extracted semantic metrics from the transcript and comments to build models to explore the drivers of video success. We compared various GenAI-based measures and compared them to traditional methods. The results from this study confirm the superior performance of GPT4 over the benchmarks. The study's theoretical contributions to the field of video-based content management and the managerial implications for practitioners in the field of video analytics are discussed

On the measurement of inventory record inaccuracies

    No full text
International audienceInventory records are often inaccurate, and this is known to be the source of major cost and service inefficiencies in retailing. In today's e-commerce and omni-channel environments, customers increasingly expect real-time visibility of stock availability across locations, making inventory record accuracy a prerequisite for reliable services such as in-store pickup or home delivery. However, the practices of measuring and reporting errors in inventory records vary considerably across the sector. Further, and while the advantages of error-free stock records are apparent, retailers may tolerate minor discrepancies as inconsequential, blurring the line between 'accurate' and 'inaccurate' records. We set out, for the first time, to: i) understand which inventory record inaccuracy (IRI) measures have been proposed so far in the literature, ii) identify how inventory record inaccuracy measurement takes place in retail practice and how it is organizationally embedded, and iii) propose a set of measures to enable benchmarking and continuous improvement. To do so, we first review the pertinent literature using a systematic search and selection method, followed by interviews with 25 retail executives responsible for areas such as inventory loss and prevention. Results obtained from the literature review and the interview study were validated in a workshop involving 46 retail professionals. We find that retailers employ a wide variety of IRI metrics - with simple binary measures being the most common ones - and that there is little consensus on what constitutes an acceptable measure. We propose a set of desirable attributes for the error measures and offer several insights that should be valuable for any retail professional involved in inventory decisions making
