Impact of farming practices on soil microbial biomass: An international synthesis
International audienceAgricultural intensification during the 20th century has profoundly altered soil ecosystems, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable practices enhancing soil quality. Soil microbial biomass is a key indicator of soil quality, reflecting both biological and ecosystem resilience. However, existing studies often focus on specific practices or regions, limiting their applicability to diverse farming systems. This study synthesizes data from 280 scientific publications selected through the Web of Science database, covering a wide geographical range, to evaluate the effects of the main agronomic levers, i.e. tillage, fertilization, crop rotation diversity including inter-cropping, and pesticide use on soil microbial biomass. Statistical analyses revealed that soil microbial biomass is generally promoted by organic fertilization (+64 % to +76 %), reduced tillage (+32 % to +41 %) and increased crop diversity (+10 % to +47 %), while mineral fertilization shows more modest effects (+7 % to +35 %). These results comply with the “carrying capacity” and “ecological habitat” concepts for soil microorganisms: farming practices affect soil microbial biomass either directly through resources availability or survival, and indirectly by changing the soil physical and chemical properties, i.e. habitat properties and growth conditions. By integrating findings from this extensive dataset, this work significantly expands the current understandings of how agricultural practices influence soil microbial biomass. It emphasizes the operational potential of soil microbial biomass as a practical, unifying indicator for assessing the impact of farming strategies on soil quality. Moreover, this study provides actionable insights to support sustainable land management and aligns international soil monitoring initiatives, including the European Directive on soil monitoring and resilience and its national implementations
Oxidation in white wine: The point of view of winemakers from areas with different oenological practices
International audienceOxygen is an important parameter in winemaking that can have positive or negative impacts on wine quality. A controlled oxygen management can lead a wine with good potential for ageing to develop an interesting ageing bouquet. On the other hand, when oxygen intake is not well controlled, loss of freshness and fruitiness can occur, and some faulty oxidative notes can appear. Oxidation is thus an ambiguous sensory concept and producers’ representation of oxidation in white wine may be very different depending on the oenological practices linked to their geographical areas. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of oenological practices and environment on wine experts’ mental representations of oxidation. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with twenty-six French winemakers, half from Burgundy and half from Jura. The results showed that the winemakers from both regions were quite consensual regarding the sensory dimensions associated with oxidation but there were differences between the two regions in terms of which types of oxidation they considered. The idea of premature oxidation was clearly more salient for the Burgundy respondents than for the Jura ones. Our results stress the context-dependent character of oxidation judgement following wine tasting

Green spaces are widely perceived as beneficial, but whatis their economic worth? In this article, the authors Capucine Chapel, Mohamed Hilal, and Julie Le Gallo, provide a critical review of economic valuation methods applied to green spaces. The paper questions current practices, identifies persistent gaps, and proposes new research directions to better incorporate these public goods into planning and policy decisions.
International audienceThe current changes in vocational training and work raise questions about the engineering of professional skills development, which would support and underpin their development through a personalised approach to training pathways. However, the numerous studies carried out in different fields of social science concerning the socio-professional trajectories of individuals do not allow us to stabilise the conceptual elements for such engineering. Adopting the theoretical framework of vocational didactics, this article proposes a number of conceptual points of reference for a didactic and diachronic perspective on vocational training pathways, based on modelled trajectories of competence development among professionals. It illustrates the value of this by analysing the development of agronomic reasoning in learners preparing for a vocational baccalaureate in Agricultural Business Management.
Sustainable Durian Rind Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Poly(vinyl) Alcohol Hydrogels Synthesis for Enhancing Crosslinking and Release Kinetics Efficiency
International audienceThis study developed hydrogels from durian rind-derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCd) blended with poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA) for biomedical applications. The influence of NaOH concentration (10–60% w/v) on the degree of substitution (DS) of CMCd and the crosslinking properties of the resulting hydrogels was examined. Durian rind, a biodegradable and renewable resource, was transformed into CMCd with DS values ranging from 0.17 to 0.94. The highest yield (230.96%) was achieved using 30% NaOH (CMCd-30). This CMCd-30 was combined with PVA and crosslinked using citric acid to form a hydrogel with maximum crosslinking efficiency (86.16%). The resulting CMCd-30/PVA hydrogel exhibited a high swelling ratio (125.54%), reflecting its superior water absorption and functional group availability—key traits for biomedical use. Methylene blue (MB) release from the hydrogel extended up to 1440 min, confirming its drug delivery potential. Overall, the CMCd-30/PVA hydrogel demonstrated promising biocompatibility potential and performance, making it a promising candidate for wound dressings and controlled drug delivery systems. This work highlights the potential of agricultural waste valorization in developing sustainable and efficient biomaterials for pharmaceutical and medical applications

Chapter 1 : Introduction
International audienceIn the wake of the cultural approach to the Industrial Revolution, historians have investigated the intellectual and social origins of the sustained growth of European agriculture in early modern and modern Europe. In particular, they have stressed the significance of ‘useful knowledge’ in underpinning technological progress. Did an ‘Agricultural Enlightenment’ of the eighteenth century metamorphose into an ‘Agricultural Revolution’? What were the effects of the ‘agromania’ that swept through Europe after the Peace of Aachen and reached even Europe’s remote peripheries? Dissemination and emulation issues, along with discussions of competing institutional frameworks facilitating innovation and technological adoption, have become central..
