The raw and processed microarray data are available in the ArrayExpress database under Accession Number E-MTAB-4857 and interpretation of this data is found in the research article “Structure and function of AmtR in Mycobacterium smegmatis: implications for post-transcriptional regulation of urea metabolism through a small antisense RNA” (Petridis et al., in press) [1]

    AbstractFatty acids themselves have a number of biological properties and its easy intake by the human body will focus to the synthesis of many heterocyclic moiety substituted with fatty acid residue, to make more gradual intake of heterocycles in the human body. 2,5-Dimethyl pyrrole 2(a–e) and 1,3-benzoxazin-4-one 4(b–e) derivatives were synthesized, from cyclization of fatty acid hydrazide 1(a–e) with acetonyl acetone and from the reaction of fatty esters 3(b–e) with anthranilic acid in the presence of POCl3, respectively. All these compounds were characterized with the help of IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectra. The synthesized compounds were screened for antimicrobial evaluation against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus SA 22, Bacillus subtilis MTCC 121), gram-negative (Escherichia coli K12, Klebsiella pneumoniae) and fungal strains (Candida albicans IOA-109) and were found to be good antimicrobial agents

    AbstractIn contrast to subtractive manufacturing techniques, additive manufacturing processes are known for their high efficiency in regards to utilisation of feedstock. However the various polymer, metallic and composite feedstocks used within additive manufacturing are mainly derived from energy consuming, inefficient methods, often originating from non-sustainable sources. This work explores the mechanical properties of additively manufactured composite structures fabricated from recycled sustainable wood waste with the aim of enhancing mechanical properties through glass fibre reinforcement.In the first instance, samples were formed by pouring formulation of wood waste (wood flour) and thermosetting binder (urea formaldehyde), with and without glass fibres, into a mould. The same formulations were used to additively manufacture samples via a layered deposition technique. Samples manufactured using each technique were cured and subsequently tested for their mechanical properties. Additively manufactured samples had superior mechanical properties, with up to 73% increase in tensile strength compared to moulded composites due to a densification of feedstock/paste and fibre in-situ directional alignment

    AbstractBackgroundAntidepressant efficacy of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) treatment in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients remains unpredictable. N-3 PUFA can mitigate oxidative stress, which is common in CAD and may contribute to depressive symptoms. This study investigated whether greater pre-treatment oxidative stress, measured by the ratios of late-stage lipid peroxidation markers (malondialdehyde [MDA], 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal [4-HNE], and 8-isoprostane [8-ISO]) to an early-stage marker (lipid hydroperoxides [LPH]), predicted n-3 PUFA antidepressant benefits in CAD.MethodsThis was a secondary analysis of CAROTID (CAD Randomized Omega-3 Trial in Depression, NCT00981383). Patient demographics and medical characteristics were collected. Depressive symptoms were measured using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). Patients were then randomized to receive either 1.9g/day n-3 PUFA or placebo for 12weeks, after which HAM-D scores were reassessed. Baseline LPH, 4-HNE, 8-ISO, MDA and n-3 PUFA concentrations were analysed from fasting blood.ResultsSeventy-nine patients (age=61.1±8.5, 76% male, HAM-D=7.5±6.1) were included (n=45 placebo, n=34 n-3 PUFA). In the n-3 PUFA group, higher baseline ratios of MDA/LPH (primary analysis: F1,33=6.20, beta=−0.35, p=0.018), 4-HNE/LPH (exploratory analysis: F1,33=5.35, beta=−0.32, p=0.027), and 8-ISO/LPH (exploratory analysis: F1,33=6.10, beta=−0.33, p=0.019), indicating higher oxidative stress, were associated with greater depressive symptom improvement. In each model, higher baseline EPA+DHA concentrations independently predicted depressive symptom improvement with n-3 PUFA (MDA/LPH: F1,33=11.05, p=0.002; 4-HNE/LPH: F1,33=11.36, p=0.002; 8-ISO/LPH: F1,33=13.15, p=0.001). No associations were observed in the placebo group.Conclusionsn-3 PUFA may be more likely to improve depressive symptoms in CAD patients with pre-treatment evidence of oxidative stress

    AbstractThe multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach illustrates how motor classification systems, assessments and outcome measures currently available have been applied to a national cohort of children and young people with dystonia and other hyperkinetic movement disorders (HMD) particularly with a focus on dyskinetic cerebral palsy (CP). The paper is divided in 3 sections. Firstly, we describe the service model adopted by the Complex Motor Disorders Service (CMDS) at Evelina London Children's Hospital and King's College Hospital (ELCH-KCH) for deep brain stimulation. We describe lessons learnt from available dystonia studies and discuss/propose ways to measure DBS and other dystonia-related intervention outcomes. We aim to report on current available functional outcome measures as well as some impairment-based assessments that can encourage and generate discussion among movement disorders specialists of different backgrounds regarding choice of the most important areas to be measured after DBS and other interventions for dystonia management. Finally, some recommendations for multi-centre collaboration in regards to functional clinical outcomes and research methodologies for dystonia-related interventions are proposed

    Removal efficiency of Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn from polluted water using dithiocarbamate ligands

    AbstractPresently, there is increased attention and focus on heavy metals, which are becoming one of the most serious environmental problems due to their adverse health effects. These toxic heavy metals are not easily degraded and require removal from polluted water to protect people and the environment. The purpose of this work was to prepare two types of dithiocarbamate ligands, one aliphatic (diethyldithiocarbamate) and the other aromatic (diphenyldithiocarbamate), and to use them as chelators to remove Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn from polluted water. Dithiocarbamates were selected because they have good binding ability and can precipitate metal ions as complexes. The metal removal efficiency is compared between both ligands and also compared to the efficiency of activated carbon in an adsorption process to remove the same metals. The investigation results indicated that the diphenyldithiocarbamate ligand was more efficient in removing the studied metals than the diethyldithiocarbamate analogues. Additionally, the metal removal efficiency of the diphenyldithiocarbamate ligand was more effective than using the activated carbon method

    AbstractThe synthesis of 4,4′-(arylmethylene)bis(3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-ol) was performed effectively by the reaction of aryl aldehydes and 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone in the presence of a catalytic amount of Ce(SO4)2.4H2O as reusable and environmentally friendly catalyst in water/ethanol solution within 5–25min in 80–98% yields. All of the obtained compounds were characterized by FT IR, 1H and 13C NMR. The method has the advantages of high yields, short reaction time, simple work-up and reusability of catalyst

    Separating content-specific retrieval from post-retrieval processing

    AbstractAccording to cortical reinstatement accounts, neural processes engaged at the time of encoding are re-engaged at the time of memory retrieval. The temporal precision of event-related potentials (ERPs) has been exploited to assess this possibility, and in this study ERPs were acquired while people made memory judgments to visually presented words encoded in two different ways. There were reliable differences between the scalp distributions of the signatures of successful retrieval of different contents from 300 to 1100 ms after stimulus presentation. Moreover, the scalp distributions of these content-sensitive effects changed during this period. These findings are, to our knowledge, the first demonstration in one study that ERPs reflect content-specific processing in two separable ways: first, via reinstatement, and second, via downstream processes that operate on recovered information in the service of memory judgments

    ResumoFármacos inotrópicos fazem parte do tratamento de insuficiência cardíaca; no entanto, o tratamento com inotrópicos tem sido amplamente debatido devido ao aumento da incidência de efeitos adversos e da mortalidade. Recentemente, levosimendana, um agente inotrópico positivo, provou ser eficaz na insuficiência cardíaca aguda, reduz a mortalidade e melhora o desempenho cardíaco e renal. Relatamos o caso de uma paciente de 75 anos, com história de insuficiência cardíaca e renal e fratura de quadril. Levosimendana foi usada na preparação do pré‐operatório como terapia adjuvante para melhorar a função cardíaca e renal e permitir a cirurgia.AbstractInotropic drugs are part of the treatment of heart failure; however, inotropic treatment has been largely debated due to the increased incidence of adverse effects and increased mortality. Recently levosimendan, an inotropic positive agent, has been proved to be effective in acute heart failure, reducing the mortality and improving cardiac and renal performance. We report the case of a 75‐year‐old woman with history of heart and renal failure and hip fracture. Levosimendan was used in preoperative preparation as an adjuvant therapy, to improve cardiac and renal function and to allow surgery
