ANALYSIS OF BANKS’ INTEREST MARGINS
Get PDFThe article concerns the possibilities to assess the effectiveness of bank services basing on an analysis of their interest margins, and its aim is to show the informational capacity of those measures. The first part of the article discusses theoretical issues related to setting various types of interest margins and on their basis specifying interest margin discrepancies. Then results of empirical research are presented which were conducted basing on the data from quarterly financial reports of selected WSE listed banks in 1998-2009. The analysis covered the shaping of all the discussed values in time, both for the bank sector as a whole and in relation to particular banks

It was noted that after a few years of cooperation the agreement between IASB and FASB was made. With the participation of IOSCO, the EU, and the SEC, these two organizations decided to jointly develop a new set of high quality accounting standards

No full textThis paper examines the role that the Uniform System of Accounts (USALI) plays in hotel-accounting practices and examines how widely accepted and adopted USALI is in today\'s lodging industry. It also provides a brief history of USALI by emphasizing the key factors that initiated and shaped its development. The USALI is the standard for financial reporting for lodging-industry operators and is widely (although not exclusively) used. Surprisingly, some 12 percent of hospitality accountants may not know anything about the USALI. The chart of accounts has been revised periodically since its inception in the 1920s and has always reflected the collective wisdom of hospitality-industry financial experts
FINANCIAL STRUCTURE OF FRENCH SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISES – EMPIRICAL RESULTS
No full textFinancial structure of small and medium-sized enterprises differs from financial structure of large companies. To verify this thesis an analysis of 8 financial indicators describing financial structure of French SMEs was made. Data used in research have their source in the European Commission database and concern the period of 1989 – 2004. The research has not proved unequivocally that the share of own capital in total balance in SMEs is lower than in large companies. It has also denied the hypothesis that short-term financing plays a greater role in the sector. These findings are contrary to the popular belief in predominance of own capital and short-term capital in small firms. The research showed also non-standard functioning of medium-sized enterprises
THE ROLE OF THE INSURANCE OMBUDSMAN
No full textPension system reform in Poland was inevitable, mainly due to an aging population and financial instability. A new multi-pillar pension system replaced the former system, which had been entirely financed on a pay-as-you-go basis. The first and second pillars are based on a Defined Contribution formula and represent the compulsory part of the pension scheme. The third pillar is organized on a voluntary basis and includes supplementary pension savings. The second and third pillars are funded resulting in the allocation of pension capital on financial markets. Implementation of a partly-funded pension system and privately managed pension funds made it necessary to create an institution that represents pensioners’ interests in the public system. Hence the competition of insurance ombudsman was enlarged to protect the participants of pension funds beginning in April 2002. An insurance ombudsman deals with complaints of the insured and takes action to correct pension market failures. Moreover, the institution cooperates with the pension supervisor and offers free pension advice

No full textDecyzje gospodarcze, podejmowane przez uczestników obrotu gospodarczego, posiadająnajczęściej wymiar finansowy. Za uniwersalną podstawę dokonywania wyboru racjonalnych działań przyjmuje się sprawozdania finansowe, stanowiące informację o sytuacji finansowej i dokonaniach jednostek gospodarujących. W związku z postępującą globalizacją, w tym rów-nież w zakresie rynków finansowych, w skali międzynarodowej podejmowane są działania zmierzające do doskonalenia procesu tworzenia i prezentacji informacji oraz rewizji finanso-wej. Całokształt uregulowań w tej dziedzinie powinien służyć zabezpieczeniu interesów zróż-nicowanej grupy użytkowników informacji finansowej oraz bezpieczeństwu obrotu gospo-darczego. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie na cechy jakościowe, jakim powinny odpowiadaćraporty finansowe, będące głównym źródłem informacji o dokonaniach i sytuacji finansowej jednostek gospodarczych. Ich przestrzeganie powinno w efekcie sprawić, iż dostarczane użyt-kownikom informacje finansowe będą w pełni zaspokajały ich oczekiwania
Consistency and Some Other Requirements of a Formal Theory in the Context of Multiverse Models
Get PDFThe paper is devoted to the problem of describing reality in the language of mathematics and logic in connection with intellectual intuition. The question raised is how the basic requirements of mathematical theory and logic will change if some of the multiverse models of modern physics are taken as the basis. Mathematics is considered in the context of various historical approaches. It is shown that some of the well-known requirements of a formal theory (such as consistency) may begin to play a different role if the multiverse hypothesis is accepted. In the framework of theories based on the idea of multiple worlds, the logical consequence, the natural law of Duns Scotus, the law of excluded middle, and other well-known facts of classical logic which in some cases cause controversy due to their intuitive unacceptability are resolved. The paper discusses an approach based on paraconsistent logics: such logics can be considered the first to correspond to multiverse theories
THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATION AND ADVOCACY IN RESOLVING CULTURE-BASED CONFLICT: LESSONS FROM EFFORTS TO COMBAT FGM PRACTICES IN KENYA
Get PDFThis study examines the role of communication and advocacy in resolving culture-based conflicts in Kenya, focusing on the harmful practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). While existing studies on conflicts in Kenya have focused on inter-group violence, such as class, political and ethnic conflicts, few studies have examined how cultural practices constitute violence, and few have offered recommendations on how to deal with cultural conflicts and violence. Culture-based conflicts in Kenya, particularly those related to harmful cultural practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), have been a persistent challenge. While communication and advocacy are often cited as essential in conflict resolution, their application in resolving culture-driven violence in Kenya and many African countries remains low. This study aims to contribute to the growing literature and debates on cultural violence by (1) examining cultural-based violence in Kenya, (2) assessing how communication and advocacy techniques and strategies can be used in FGM advocacy campaigns in Kenya, (3) evaluating the potential impact of these strategies especially in changing attitudes and behaviors towards FGM. The study will conclude with a set of recommendations that are aimed at reducing cultural violence in Kenya through the use of communication and advocacy. 
The “CONFRONTATION” AND “RIVALRY” IN SELECTED FACEBOOK PROFILES FOR/ABOUT WOMEN. SHORT QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS
No full textThis article discusses the nature of discourse about confrontation and rivalry which takes place between women (and men) as portrayed in materials published in 50 selected Facebook profiles for/about women. The women portrayed in those profiles were competing with other women or men, on a number of levels relating to their professional careers, sports and other elements of their lives. The areas in which confrontations were identified included: promotion; management of staff and subordinates; salary increases and success. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis (BuzzSumo and Atlas. ti as a research tools) of the discourse were applied. The answers to questions regarding the tone of the materials in this sector of selected Facebook profiles were obtained
