The Role of Eurosceptic Tabloids in Building Awareness of the British People Ahead of the Referendum on UK Membership in the European Union in 2016
The research aimed to explain the role of the leading British tabloids in the 2016 referendum campaign and to show that tabloid populism practised by selected press titles, using several methods and tools, skilfully influenced the formation of public opinion. The study, which was essentially based on content analysis, examined the three most opinion-forming tabloid daily newspapers: “The Sun”, “The Daily Express”, and “The Daily Mail”, which, according to the observers, were and remain populist newspapers. The article is only a contribution to undertaking broader research, the subject of which should be the instrumental role of the British press in shaping attitudes and social opinions hostile to the European Union during Great Britain’s membership in this organization
EVOLUTION OF LOYALTY PROGRAMS OFFERED TO CUSTOMERS AND INVESTOR
The subject of this study is loyalty programs. The aim of the article is to draw attention to loyalty in the current economy. The purpose of the article is to examine the evolution of loyalty programs offered to consumers and investors. The study will cover the issue of building a loyal base of clients and investors. To achieve the aim of the study in the article, analysis of the literature, description, comparison, desk research and case study methods were applied. The study presents the author's definition and classification of loyalty programs. The research has demonstrated that there is social acceptance for activities undertaken in the field of loyalty programs. Such loyalty programs tighten financial and non-financial links with stakeholders. At the same time, programs offered to consumers are evolving towards creating an emotional loyalty that resonates with consumers. In turn, programs offered to investors are evolving towards generating financial benefits only on the capital market. However, that means resigning from creating an investor as a consumer through the loyalty program. At the same time, the loyalty program is open to every investor, regardless of the country of origin and type of investor. It can be expected that in the next stage of evolution these will be aware of their rights and environmentally sensitive stakeholders’ attitudes and preferences will have to be taken into account to an increasing extent by the compan
THE IMPACT OF IFRS ADOPTION ON FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN CIS
Exploring the relationship between International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows is the main objective of this paper. Although IFRS is identified as a determinant of FDI, a few studies have examined the impact of IFRS on FDI inflows, and it is unexplored as to whether IFRS impacts CIS countries. This paper covers ten (10) IFRS adopted CIS countries from 2000 to 2019 using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and bias-corrected Least Square Dummy Variable (LSDVC). OLS estimator shows that IFRS positively impacts FDI inflows. However, according to the results of LSDVC, there is a negative relationship between IFRS adoption and FDI inflows. Generally, in developing countries implementing IFRS would lead to FDI enhancement. The negative relationship between IFRS adoption and FDI inflows in CIS countries shows that IFRS is not an essential factor of FDI inflows
DETERMINANTS OF OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY: THE CASE OF SAUDI BANKS
The study determines the factors that can affect the operational efficiency of Saudi commercial banks. It uses the data of listed banks from the period 2010 to 2017. The panel data estimation technique of pooled ordinary least squares is used with random and fixed effects estimations to find the significant factors. Based on the Hausman test (1978) fixed effects estimation results are used for discussion. The operational efficiency of Saudi banks is influenced by the same factors highlighted for different economies, with a certain exception. Capital adequacy, profitability, and bank size have an adverse influence on operational efficiency. Contrary to this it is positively related to liquidity and asset quality. The results of the study will be useful for policymakers and bank managers to support the effective role of banks in the improvement of the financial sector which is also part of the Kingdom's vision 2030 development plan.
ARE BANKRUPTCY MODELS ADEQUATE FOR CONDITION ASSESSMENT OF COMPANIES LISTED ON WARSAW STOCK EXCHANGE
The goal of this paperis to present early warning models used in the process of bankruptcy recognition that should meet the terms of good economic condition. Economic condition of a company on a capital market is good when the goal of the business is achieved, namely the increase in value, that occurs with the increase in earnings per share. The results show that the higher scores in a discriminant model, the lower the EPS growth rate. Correlation and linear regression models are applied on a group of observations from companies listed on Warsaw Stock Exchange
THE ROLE OF CUSTOMS PROCEDURES IN REDUCTION OF MAINTENANCE, REPAIR AND OVERHAUL COSTS IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY
Scope of the article will cover analysis of special customs procedures and other facilitations that can be used in MRO business. The two research questions that are answered in the paper are: what customs procedures can be used, how they work and if those can reduce costs of MRO operations significantly. There are two research methodological approaches used in this article: qualitative and quantitative. Results show a great difference in savings between two variants, in which one would present a very basic level of special customs procedures usage and a variant in which all presented possibilities would be applied. Research results showed many possibilities for changes in the customs strategy of a company interested in evolving it and generating savings from many facilitations due to usage of special customs procedures as well as a compact explanation of how the application of a special procedures process looks. This article may be interesting for both: scientists and specialists working in the field of customs as well as for the companies working internationally with a lot of imported materials needed to perform work on an engine or aircraft. The authors’ conclusion is that even small companies might learn a lot from the analysis given in this article, due to the fact that the knowledge gathered here can give a greater understanding of customs knowledge presented in this article, combined with knowledge about other taxes will give an extraordinary advantage on the market for companies in MRO, or a similar industry.
ON SEPARATION OF MONETARY AND FISCAL OPERATIONS IN MACROECONOMIC STATISTICS
The aim of the paper is to discuss one of the major topical and controversial issues in contemporary statistics, which is the separation of monetary and fiscal operations in national accounts. This issue revolves mainly around the operation of public financial institutions mandated to carry out monetary as well as fiscal transactions on behalf of governments. After discussing the methodological dimension of the point at issue, the paper numerically demonstrates the impact on final figures given the existing data constraints. Admittedly, substantial changes to the current recporting may modify the aggregates utilized in the analysis of the fiscal sustainability or the economic role of the government as such. The paper demonstrates that the statistical uncertainty about the size of the government sector is a fundamental issue. The impact on the level of government indebtedness may reach up to tens of percentage points
FINANCIAL INCLUSION – GLOBALLY IMPORTANT DETERMINANTS
This paper highlights the globally-important determinants of financial inclusion. The determinants identified in this paper are formal account ownership; demand for formal savings; demand for formal borrowing; financial literacy and education; debit and credit card usage; the need to receive remittances from family and friends; size of the financial system; number of automated teller machines (ATMs); number of bank branches; proximity to a bank; availability and access to mobile phones; availability of digital financial products and services; technology infrastructure; government policy; culture and traditional belief systems; national financial inclusion strategy and implementation; and direct legislation
THE IMPACT OF MACROECONOMIC VARIABLES ON EXCHANGE RATE UNCERTAIN
Macroeconomic convergence is critical for member states to achieve the level of harmonization required for establishing a stable and resilient monetary union. The East African Community (EAC) member states, therefore, established set targets for macroeconomic convergence, intending to eliminate exchange rate uncertainty within the bloc and reduce the costs of the monetary union. However, recent empirical studies indicate that the rate of convergence of the member states to the set macroeconomic targets has been very slow, resulting in high exchange rate uncertainty within the region. It is against this backdrop that this research was conceptualized to examine the influence of convergence in macroeconomic variables on the exchange rate uncertainty of EAC states using secondary panel data. The study made use of standard deviation and the Levin Lin Chu (LLC) test to determine convergence and unit root respectively. The panel ordinary least squares (OLS) regression findings showed that all the explanatory variables had a negatively significant effect on exchange rate uncertainty. This implies that convergence in macroeconomic variables among the member countries slows exchange rate uncertainty. Thus, policy should be made towards controlling this negative effect resulting from macroeconomic variables as East Africa bids for monetary union
RELATIONS BETWEEN THE PRINCIPLE OF NEUTRALITY AND ELEMENTS OF VALUE ADDED TAX STRUCTURE
The principal of neutrality is a key principle of the European Union (EU) Value Added Tax (VAT) system. The concept of tax neutrality has a number of dimensions and meanings. The purpose of the article is to examine whether the principle of neutrality shapes the main elements of VAT structure, what concepts of tax neutrality are proper to shape each of those elements, and how the principle of neutrality affects each of those elements. The method adopted for the examination is a doctrinal method – analysis of the VAT Directive provisions (using a formal-dogmatic approach supported by analysing selected judgements of the Court of Justice of the EU) but without those that concern special rules. The study showed that the basic elements of the VAT structure such as the subject of taxation, object of taxation, tax basis, tax rates, exemptions, and conditions of payment are shaped in different manner and extent by the principle of neutrality. Tax neutrality in its basic sense (marked N1) has the strongest influence on basis of taxation (improper amount of the basis disallows shifting the tax forward onto the customer and regaining output tax to relieve the taxable person entirely from the burden of the VAT) and obviously it influences the right to deduct input tax likewise in the tax period (term of refund). Tax neutrality in another sense (marked N2) by demanding equal treatment, affects such VAT elements as subject and object of taxation, exemptions and rates. Tax neutrality in the broadest sense (N3), as a term consisting of N1 and N2, concerns all the elements of VAT
