2019-05 Is an academic career a luxury good?: student debt and the under-representation of minorities
Department of Economics. Working Paper Series no. 2019-05. 22 pages.Minority groups are under-represented in university teaching and research positions; they are employed in these positions at lower rates than would be indicated by college enrollments and (to a lesser extent) shares of doctoral degrees. Using data from the National Science Foundation’s Survey of Earned Doctorates, from 2001 to 2016, this article examines whether some of this is due an under-representation of scholars with high student debt and fewer parental resources, choosing business or government careers rather than academia. Analyzing a large sample of new PhDs from 2001 to 2016, we find that student debt has limited the decision to enter academia, perhaps with long-term impacts for diversity of the profession. Examining the subsample of STEM PhDs, the same patterns emerge -- with perhaps stronger adverse impacts of debt on Black and Hispanic academic career choice

Its root force is found in human biology, the fact that as a socially-reproducing species, humans compete for mates and the exploitation of others can generate a competitive advantage. Social institutions direct and channel this competitiveness. Thus, during 97-98 percent of our species existence, competitiveness was not expressed by accumulating material wealth and political power, but by being good warriors and foragers, being cooperative, and being generous. However, with the rise of civilization and the state, elites gained ownership and control over the means of production, thereby subjugating all others and appropriating their surplus. Although violence stood behind this exploitation, ideology served as the principal political tool for its maintenance. It is the force of ideology that clarifies why, even with free speech, free press, free assembly, and the franchise, exploitation continues to exist
Children's right to privacy, independence, and autonomy: Report to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
- Threats to child privacy come in many different forms and
are prone to discriminate against the most vulnerable. One’s
right to privacy is the hallmark of liberal democracy, and
yet, children are increasingly facing threats to their right to privacy
as well as autonomy.
- Increased usage of online platforms and social media have
helped perpetuate violations against children’s rights to
privacy. Due to a lack of awareness and regulation, children are
subjected to online harassment and privacy violations.
Discriminatory practices leave many children vulnerable to rights
violations. Children from lower-income families and communities
face disparate infringements and require different solutions.
- Promoting child privacy through the lens of race, gender, and
nationality, among others, is a critical aspect if such violations are to
be addressed

Spinach-derived porous carbon nanosheets as high-performance catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction
ACS Omega, Volume 5, Issue 38, 29 September 2020, Pages 24367-24378.Biomass-derived porous carbon materials are effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), with promising applications in low-temperature fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Herein, we developed a synthesis procedure that used spinach as a source of carbon, iron, and nitrogen for preparing porous carbon nanosheets and studied their ORR catalytic performance. These carbon sheets showed a very high ORR activity with a half-wave potential of +0.88 V in 0.1 M KOH, which is 20 mV more positive than that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. In addition, they showed a much better long-term stability than Pt/C and were insensitive to methanol. The remarkable ORR performance was attributed to the accessible high-density active sites that are primarily from Fe–Nx moieties. This work paves the way toward the use of metal-enriching plants as a source for preparing porous carbon materials for electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications
SHARED GREY MATTER CORRELATES OF READING AND ATTENTION
Reading disability (RD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) co-occur at ahigh rate, with estimates as high as 40% of children with one disorder also being diagnosed with the other. Because of this high comorbidity rate, there is increasing interest in the potential shared neural risk factors for both RD and ADHD. One approach is to determine brain areas associated with both reading and attention in non-clinical populations. The current study aimed to identify shared grey matter (GM) correlates of reading and attention by using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in 330 youth (age = 8-18 years, M = 13.4, SD = 3.1; 156 males, 174 females) from a population-based sample, the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC). Multiple regression analyses were used to determine regions where GM volume was related to reading or behavioral attention scores (p100) revealed GM correlates of both reading and attention scores in the bilateral caudate, bilateral precuneus, and left middle temporal gyrus. These results are consistent with a recent meta-analysis of VBM studies of RD and ADHD which found that reduced GM in the right caudate was a shared feature of both disorders.
