Anyons from three-body hard-core interactions in one dimension
Traditional anyons in two dimensions have generalized exchange statistics governed by the braid group. By analyzing the topology of configuration space, we discover that an alternate generalization of the symmetric group governs particle exchanges when there are hard-core three-body interactions in one-dimension. We call this new exchange symmetry the traid group and demonstrate that it has abelian and non-abelian representations that are neither bosonic nor fermionic, and which also transform differently under particle exchanges than braid group anyons. We show that generalized exchange statistics occur because, like hard-core two-body interactions in two dimensions, hard-core three-body interactions in one dimension create defects with co-dimension two that make configuration space no longer simply-connected. Ultracold atoms in effectively one-dimensional optical traps provide a possible implementation for this alternate manifestation of anyonic physics.Published in: Annals of Physics, Volume 412, January 2020, Article number 168003
Assessing the environmental impacts of halving food loss and waste along the food supply chain
Reducing food loss and waste (FLW) is widely recognized as an important lever for lowering the environmental impacts of food systems. The United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda includes a goal to re-duce FLW by 50% by 2030. Given differences in resource inputs along the food supply chain (FSC), the environmental benefits of FLW reduction will vary by stage of the FSC. Here, we identify the points along the supply chain where a 50% FLW reduction could yield the largest potential environmental benefits, assuming that decreases in consumption propagate back up the supply chain to reduce production. We use an environmentally extended input-output (EEIO) model combined with data on rates of FLW to calculate the scale of the total environmental impacts of the U.S. food system resulting from lost or wasted food. We evaluate the maximum potential environmental benefit resulting from 50% FLW reduction at all possible combinations of six supply chain stages (agricultural production, food processing, distribution/retail, restaurant foodservice, institutional foodservice, and households).We find that FLW reduction efforts should target the foodservice (restaurant) sector, food processing sector,and household consumption. Halving FLW in the foodservice sector has the highest potential to reduce greenhouse gas output and energy use. Halving FLW in the food processing sector could reduce the most land use and eutrophication potential, and reducing household consumption waste could avert the most water consumption. In contrast, FLW reduction at the retail, institutional foodservice, and farm level averts less environmental impact. Cost, Cost-Effectiveness, and Cost-Benefit of Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality versus Enhanced Treatment as Usual
Suicide rates have been steadily increasing in both the U.S. general population and military, with significant psychological and economic consequences. One of the most empirically-supported suicide-focused interventions to date, the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), has demonstrated clinical effectiveness across a number of clinical trials. The purpose of the current study is to examine the economic costs, benefits, cost-effectiveness, and cost-benefit of CAMS versus enhanced treatment as usual (ETAU) in an active duty military sample using data from a recent randomized controlled trial of CAMS versus ETAU. Using a micro-costing approach, the cost of each condition was calculated at the individual level from a healthcare system perspective. Cost-effectiveness ratios, cost-benefit ratios, and net benefit were calculated and analyzed using general linear mixed modeling on multiply-imputed datasets. Treatment costs were comparable between conditions; both conditions were associated with significant clinical improvement. With respect to reducing suicidal ideation, CAMS evidenced significantly greater effectiveness and cost-effectiveness at 3-month follow-up. Cost per case resolved and cost per suicide attempt prevented were also lower in CAMS compared to ETAU. Further, CAMS was found to produce significantly greater benefit in the form of decreased healthcare expenditures at 6-month follow-up. CAMS also demonstrated significantly better cost-benefit and net benefit at 12-month follow-up, although neither condition evidenced significant healthcare cost savings after factoring in the cost of the intervention.
