Communicatio in Sacris: A Historical Overview and Critical Analysis of Canon 844
No full textCanon 844 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law contains the Catholic Church’s norm governing sacramental communicatio in sacris. Allowing certain exceptions for separated Christians of both the East and West, it stands in notable contrast to the 1917 code’s restrictive norm on the matter, which mentioned no exceptions at all and prohibited even common prayer. The main reasons for the change were a growing ecumenism and a shifting ecclesiology, both of which the Second Vatican Council affirmed. However, the difference between the current norm and the stricter discipline of the 1917 CIC and that of prior centuries is not as drastic as it may seem. There is a subtle continuity in the general principle, the allowed exceptions, and the sacramental doctrines over time. An overview of the history of communicatio in sacris will shed needed light on that continuity and on the canonical principles at work, and should help frame current debates on the subject. This thesis will begin with a look at how the Catholic Church approached the question of communicatio in sacris from the very beginning, starting with Scripture and the early Church, proceeding through to medieval attitudes toward the Eastern Orthodox, and finally exploring attempts during the Tridentine era to discern a principled discipline for a variety of exceptional situations. Next, it will explore how the 1917 code and its commentators handled the practice, and then Vatican II’s changes and their implementation. The Judicial Vicar Under Mitis Iudex and Dignitas connubii
No full textThe recent motu proprio Mitis Iudex greatly increased the role of the judicial vicar in theprocedure for marriage nullity, by means of a series of significant changes in the law. Thesechanges require one to relook at the Instruction Dignitas connubii, in order to examine itscontinued relevance. This paper will carefully examine the role of the judicial vicar in the oldlaws from the 1983 code, with careful attention to the historical understanding of the role. Thenit will compare that with the changes made by Mitis Iudex, looking at the purpose behind theincreased role of the judicial vicar. Finally, it will apply these changes to Dignitas connubii, firstexamining all the relevant articles and determining which ones still apply and which ones do not,and then analyzing whether the ius vigens is continuous or disruptive with the document.Chapter One will first take a brief historical view of the judicial vicar, and thenproceed to analyze his role in the 1983 code prior to Mitis Iudex. Chapter Two will analyze MitisIudex first as an overall document, and then specifically how the role of the judicial vicar haschanged. Crucifixion: a Musical Reflection on the Poems of Natalia Guerrero
No full textThis thesis is a musical composition in four movements, set for two voices and chamber orchestra. The text used in the composition is a dramatic re-telling of Christ's passion and death through the lens of a female narrator who remains faithful to the sacred narrative while telling the story through the lens of her own subjectivity. Drawing upon the multiple meanings of the word 'passion,' the dramatic poetry connects the romantic passion portrayed in the Song of Songs with the passion of Jesus suffering and dying on the cross. By connecting the world's rejection of Love Incarnate with the violence and oppression present in the modern world -- particularly racial violence and injustice -- the narrator painfully considers her own role in this violence, while asking the audience to do the same. Simulating the cascading effects of an extreme agricultural production shock: global implications of a contemporary US dust bowl event
No full textFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, Volume 4, 20 March 2020, Article number 26.Higher temperatures expected by midcentury increase the risk of shocks to crop production, while the interconnected nature of the current global food system functions to spread the impact of localized production shocks throughout the world. In this study, we analyze the global potential impact of a present-day event of equivalent magnitude to the US Dust Bowl, modeling the ways in which a sudden decline in US wheat production could cascade through the global network of agricultural trade. We use observations of country-level production, reserves, and trade data in a Food Shock Cascade model to explore trade adjustments and country-level inventory changes in response to a major, multiyear production decline. We find that a 4-year decline in wheat production of the same proportional magnitude as occurred during the Dust Bowl greatly reduces both wheat supply and reserves in the United States and propagates through the global trade network. By year 4 of the event, US wheat exports fall from 90.5 trillion kcal before the drought to 48 trillion to 52 trillion kcal, and the United States exhausts 94% of its reserves. As a result of reduced US exports, other countries meet their needs by leveraging their own reserves, leading to a 31% decline in wheat reserves globally. These findings demonstrate that an extreme production decline would lead to substantial supply shortfalls in both the United States and in other countries, where impacts outside the United States strongly depend on a country's reserves and on its relative position in the global trade network

This study analyzes health topics that have been integrated into community development grants. Methods: Community development grants from 2010 to 2017 were analyzed for health topics in Baltimore, MD. Results: Food and nutrition, chronic disease, reproductive health, adolescent health, violence prevention, health care access, and infectious disease were the least common health topics in community development grants. Conclusion: To support health equity efforts, funders should consider a broader range of health issues to integrate into community development investments
