Los sucesos de Antique de 1888
In the months of May and June 1888 broke out an anti-spanish and independentist rebellion in the province of Antique (island of Panay, Philippines). The uprising had no connection with the nationalist movement of Filipino “Ilustrados” of La Propaganda. It happened in a province with very few spanish and traditionally administered by the Order of St Augustin. We offer in this article a depth study about events virtually unknown, doing a study of its causes, objectives and protagonists. For this purpose we have transcribed the unpublished correspondence of Fr. Alipio Azpitarte, Provincial Vicar Augustinian of Antique, who in their communications with their provincial superior provides a rich and abundant information.

A project of Christian life in contrast with Manichaeism, IIº
This study brings to light a facet of De agone christiano (St Augustine, 396), which was hardly treated in the previous studies: its anti-Manichean feature. The recent Manichean studies permit to understand better the combat element present in their cosmology and ethics; this, on the other hand, helps us to understand how Augustine makes capital of it to contradict the Manichean combat in order to offer an alternative Christian combat of life based on the Gospel essence of Charity, applicable to the Christian life even today.
The catechism tittled Doctrina cristiana que se canta, under the name of Juan of Ávila, is a lot of surprises; it again shows new partials apports from the contents that wrote the Apostle of Andalucía; others authors used them. The reason may be that the catechism of Juan of Ávila ist a anonimous booklet. This article shows five new apports until now unknowns, one in Spain, and thefour other in Portugal.
This essay is a study of the life of friar Fco. Javier Valdés Noriega and some of his work, carried out by a great-grandson nephew. This microbiography aims to be a tribute on the centenary of his death (23rd of January 1913). Its preparation has provided me with the knowledge of the life and works of a relative who –at the beginning– was distant to me, almost unknown. And this knowledge has progressively led me to admire him and, above all, love him and adopt him as an example of the acceptance of the Lord’s will, always with the help of our most gracious Advocate, the Mother of Mercy.
In his book, Sources of the Self, Ch. Taylor finds that St. Augustine was the creator of interiority, of the sense of freedom emerging from the incorruptible ground of human life, and of the idea of human society unified against evil, for “the life of the saints is social” as the Saint writes in The City of God. Thus, he ensures us that Kant is as much in debt to Augustine as Rousseau. The same could be said of Descartes and the creators of the rights of the human person, such as Locke, and other builders of the “modern identity”, such as romanticism, Goethe, and modernism which attempted to move past Augustinebeyond religion.
In his Tractatus on the first letter of John, St. Augustine interprets the apostolic text with the current ecclesial key, equating dissidents of the community of the letter with the Donatists schismatic. But to this equating was opposed the fact that, while the dissidents had a Christological faith different to the faith of the community, the Donatists had the same Christological faiththat of Catholics. To solve the problem the saint extends the content of this faith: true faith on Christ –Head– involves the true faith over the Church –His Body–. In a second stage, he extends the concept of true faith in another sense to unite it inseparably to the ecclesial love. This is precisely the very faith of Catholics (“believe in”), other than the faith of the Donatists and other heretics, coinciding with the demons, who also believe that Christ is the Son God (“believe that”), but they do not love him. The core of the study constitutes the faith of Catholics with their specific aspects and impacts; but this core is preceded by other general aspects of faith present in the Augustinian text: nature, characteristics, origin, dialectic between believing and understanding, relationship with Scripture, and followed by brief comments on the damage to the faith and the lack of faith.
The books of religious professions are a documentary source of first order for the knowledge of the human, cultural and social characteristics of the members of a religious province. Over seven consecutive works will be presented to each of the books of professions that are preserved in the convent San Agustín de Zaragoza (1605-1834; except the seventh book, 1730-1799, to find lost) and the basic data of the friars: name and surnames, name of his parents, place of origin or birth, parish of baptism, date of religious profession, name of the prior (or subprior) of the convent, who was the master of novices, and even if it were the case, the notary of the town that gave faith the fact of the profession.
Paul VI, the Pope who was visionary, simple, prophetic, dialoguing, ecumenical and spiritual, knew how to guide masterly the church in the new Pentecost of Vatican II, and concretised his genius in the programmatic writing “Ecclesiam suam“, which would influence not only his entire pontificate and the very Council itself but also the task of various Christian generations including ours. He lived the cross, always in the shadow of its light.
