Newman’s Concept of Natural Religion  in the Oxford University Sermons

    No full text
Keywords: Philosophy of Religion, Revealed Religion, Natural Religion, Liberalism, John Henry Newman

La morte di Socrate. Alcune riflessioni ricavate dall’Apologia di Platone

Summary: The year 2001 recalls the 2400th. anniversary of the condemnation and execution of Socrates. This work tries to glean from Socrates’ Apology, written by Plato, elements constantly present in Western Thought. After some initial considerations about the Socratic question and the documental value of the Platonic story, three fundamental ideas are presented in Socrates’ defence: the search for truth, the enigma of death and the importance of the soul, considered as the “I” and its call to live in justice. These are central ideas in the whole of human Thought that cannot be forgotten in the millennium that begins. Parole chiave: Socrate, Platone, verità, sapere, morte, anima. Keywords: Socrates, Plato, truth, knowledge, death, soul

La coscienza situata come “polo opposto” della norma morale

    Get PDF
Summary: In this paper, I examine the thought of Romano Guardini regarding human conscience and its consequences for moral theory. One specific feature of Guardini’s view of conscience is his focus on the concept of “situation”, which could make him appear close to the position of so-called “situation ethics”. However, situation is only one pole of reality, i.e., the subjective one, which as such requires another, objective pole – the norm. To explain this kind of relation I find the Guardinian image of “ellipse” particularly useful. Conscience cannot but be always located between the two foci of an existential ellipse: one’s own situation which requires certain action and the objective goodness of acts revealed in universal norms. Key words: ethics, conscience, ellipse, situation. Parole chiave: etica, coscienza, ellisse, situazione
