The Eternity of God: Richard Swinburne vs. Thomas Aquinas

    Get PDF
One of the fundamental properties which theism has always attributed to God is eternity. However, when it comes to spelling out what it effectively means to claim that God is eternal, different theists seem to part ways in their construal of this essential divine attribute. Whereas the classical Christian view which goes back to Origen, Augustine, Boethius, St. Anselm, and St. Thomas has interpreted God’s eternity in terms of timelessness, that is, His being outside time, a contrary view which understands God’s eternity in terms of His being everlasting has been tenaciously espoused in more recent time by the renowned contemporary natural theologian, Richard Swinburne. By this, Swinburne implies that God is not outside time but is rather in every time that ever was, is and will be; He is backwardly and forwardly everlasting. Inasmuch as both views seem persuasive, this essay evaluates the position of Swinburne vis-à-vis the classical view more critically as represented in the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. Through a critical analysis of both positions and an exposition of their fundamental differences, strengths and weaknesses, it examines which interpretation helps better clearing the shadow enshrouding the question of God’s eternity

Vita consecrata: l’inaspettata valorizzazione della liturgia

    Get PDF
Summary: In this contribution we want to verify the place assigned to the liturgy in the liturgical horizons opened by Vita consecrata, through the study of the documents that accompanied the various synodal phases, starting with the Lineamenta, which already offer important indications, and then moving on to the Instrumentum laboris, the Propositiones and finally the apostolic exhortation Vita consecrata. The liturgy, the centre and summit of the Church’s life, must also become a fortiori the centre and summit of communities of consecrated life. Eucharistic celebration, listening to the Word, the Liturgy of the Hours and the sacrament of Penance, represent their source of spirituality but also their horizon of fraternal life. Furthermore, consecrated persons are called to live a transfigured life; the liturgy could be one of the main sources of such a transfiguration

    Get PDF
Summary: This paper systematically examines the commitment of the Catholic Church, through her social teachings, to the promotion of the universal project of human integral and sustainable development, especially as encapsulated in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Panoramically exploring the history of the Church’s social doctrine and how the theme of human development remains of deep interest to the Church, it highlights the relationship between the Church’s social doctrine on development and the UN’s sustainable development agenda. Reflecting on the convergences and divergences between the Church’s vision of sustainable development and the approach of the UN’s agenda, it identifies what might be considered the fundamental reason that accounts for such divergences and then attempts to draw implications for a more effective and meaningful realization of authentic and integral sustainable development for all people and for every human person.
