    Maintaining high ethical standards amongst construction professions is crucial to the development of construction industry in Malaysia. Construction professionals must face challenges in the industry with ethical conducts and practices. However, the learning process for construction professionals emphasised on technical and performance knowledge with less regards on internalisation of ethics. Hence, the aim of this paper is to investigate the significance of ethics education and training for construction professionals. This is carried out through literature review of previous authors. From the literature review, it is shown that ethics education at elementary school and undergraduate levels for construction programs at colleges/universities, and supported by ethics training by professional bodies are significant to form the nucleus for construction professionals’ moral setting in order to face the challenges of the industry

    A GIS BASED ASSESSMENT OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HOUSING CONDITIONS AND RENTAL VALUE IN GOVERNMENT BUILT HOUSING ESTATES IN MINNA

    Housing management decisions require consideration of location and space. There is a constant need for more technology and training in the industry and Geographic Information System (GIS) is not known to have been used in tackling the problems of housing conditions and related problems in Minna. This study examines the relationship between housing conditions and rental value of selected housing estates in Minna with the aid of GIS. Census sample technique was adopted where all the houses in the housing estates were sampled. Satellite images of M.I. Wushishi Housing Estate, Bosso Estate and Oduoye Housing Estate were geo-referenced and maps were produced for various analysis. Conventional geo-database was created for conditions of houses in the housing estates and from it geo-statistical analyses was carried out which produce kriging and spatial autocorrelation analysis. In addition, correlation analysis was used to analyse the impact of building conditions on rental value. It was found out among others that building conditions has weak relationship with rental values in the housing estates. It was therefore recommended amidst others that Geo-statistical tools should be an instrument for measuring and monitoring of residential property development

    Permasalahan dalam pentafsiran identiti senibina Malaysia merupakan perkara yang masihkabur walaupun ianya telah lama diwacanakan. Pencarian kepada gagasan identiti senibinatersebut berlaku hampir kepada semua negara-negara yang baru merdeka setelah penjajahmemporak perandakan bentuk pembangunan di negara berkenaan termasuklah Malaysia.Sebelum zaman penjajahan Barat, orang Melayu telah berjaya membangunkan senibina yangcukup bitara. Setiap daerah mempunyai gaya, perwatakan dan peranan senibina tersendiriyang menjadi identiti kepada kedaerahan tersebut sehinggakan masyarakat pendatangtermasuk penjajah Inggeris diperingkat awal telah membangunkan senibina mengikuti rentakperwatakan senibina dimana binaan tersebut dibangunkan. Kecelaruan senibina di negara kitasebenarnya adalah rentetan dari kecelaruan dalam pendekatan senibina di Eropah yang telahdibawa oleh penjajah Inggeris semenjak di akhir kurun ke 19 hingga diawal kurun ke 20. Dalamtempoh tersebut, banyak negara-negara yang baru merdeka daripada penjajahan Roman telahcuba untuk mengembalikan identiti senibina mereka melalui pendekatan Neo-Classicism,Gothic Revivalism dan Eclecticism. Gerakan Modernism dan diikuti dengan pemikiran Post-Modernism telah membantu masyarakat Eropah dalam membangunkan gagasan senibina ditempat mereka sehingga terbawa-bawa ke daerah tanah jajahan mereka termasuklah negarakita yang turut menggunakan pendekatan yang sama. Gagasan identiti Malaysia dalamsenibina telah mula diwacanakan di Malaysia sebaik sahaja kita bebas dari cengkamanpenjajah. Pendekatan yang paling mudah dan umum diketika itu ialah dengan mengembalikansemula gaya dan perwatakan senibina Rumah Warisan Melayu atau gabungan dari pelbagaiperwatakan senibina dari Timur Tengah, Timur Jauh, Asia Tengah atau India Utara. Walaupuntelah pelbagai percubaan yang telah dilakukan, namun sehingga kini kita masih mencari-carijawapannya kerana tiada siapa yang sanggup tampil untuk memberikan susunan (schema)jawapannya. Untuk itu, dalam usaha pencarian ke arah gagasan senibina identiti Malaysia,pemerhatian dan pencerakinan dasar pemikiran senibina warisan Melayu boleh dijadikansebagai pilihan dan diharap dapat dijadikan panduan dalam merekabentuk bangunan masakinibagi mendapatkangaya, perwatakan dan peranannya yang dapat menzahirkan identiti senibinaMalaysia, disamping keselesaan hawa serta berupaya menangani pelbagai permasalahankesan dari iklim dan persekitaran di Malaysia. Pembangunan senibina diambang abad ke 21telah memperlihatkan kepelbagaian pendekatan yang semakin menjurus kepada gagasansenibina identiti Malaysia terutama yang menggunakan pendekatan ‘hijau’ atau lestari. Selainmembincangkan senario wacana dan pendekatan senibina yang telah dilakukan di Malaysia,tulisan ini juga bertujuan untuk membincangkan tentang faedah yang bakal diperolehi darisudut ekonomi, teknologi hijau dan penggunaan bahan tempatan jika menggunakanpendekatan senibina warisan Melayu dalam pencarian ke arah identiti senibina yangdihasratkan melalui pendekatan senibina masakini

    PENDEKATAN KONSEP PELAN BANGUNAN TERBUKA DALAM PEMBANGUNAN PERUMAHAN

    Penulisan ini adalah bertujuan untuk memperlihat falsafah penerapan konsep pelan bangunan terbuka (open building planning) dalam sektor perumahan sekaligus dapat menjadikan sesebuah rumah tersebut mampu milik. Penghuni adalah sebagai pengguna yang menjadi teras utama dalam menentukan kemudahalihan (flexibility) dalam pembangunan reka bentuk. Seterusnya prinsip, aspek dan juga langkah dalam perlaksanaan konsep pelan bangunan terbuka yang menjadi garis panduan berdasarkan dua aspek iaitu sosial dan teknikal turut dibahaskan. Secara kesimpulannya, pendekatan konsep pelan terbuka dalam sektor perumahan dapat memberikan penghuni peluang untuk menentukan citarasa perumahan berdasarkan kehendak dan kemampuan

    SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES IN RESIDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF HOUSING ADEQUACY AND RESIDENTIAL SATISFACTION

    Housing adequacy and residential satisfaction are two concepts used to evaluate the extent to which housing schemes meet residents’ needs and expectations. However, the differences and similarities in the way residents understand these concepts have not been properly articulated in the research literature. This study therefore investigated the differences and similarities in residents’ perception of housing adequacy and residential satisfaction with a view to identifying the dimensions of housing adequacy and residential satisfaction evaluation; and the factors that influenced this. The data were derived from a questionnaire survey of 517 residents in public housing in Ogun State, Nigeria; and analyzed using descriptive statistical, factor and categorical regression analyses. The result shows that whereas the residents evaluated housing adequacy based on four key dimensions: ambient condition of interior spaces; security, utilities and neighbourhood facilities; social infrastructure and sizes of main activity areas, residential satisfaction was evaluated based on three dimensions: the physical, social and economic environment of the housing estates; size, type, location, appearance; privacy and security of the residences. Residential satisfaction, tenure and income emerged as the three strongest predictors of housing adequacy, while housing adequacy, employment status and sex of the respondents were the three strongest predictors of residential satisfaction. Age of the respondents was found to be the only predictor of both housing adequacy and residential satisfaction. The key implication of the study is that, in housing research, each of these two concepts can serve as a surrogate for each other. It also implies that to improve the living conditions of residents of public housing, housing policy makers and developers should pay sufficient attention to the needs of all categories of residents by making sure that the housing preferences of workers in the different sectors and age groups are properly incorporated into future housing projects

    THE CHALLENGES OF LIFE CYCLE COSTING APPLICATION OF INTELLIGENT BUILDING IN MALAYSIA CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

    The economic growth in Malaysia is contributed mainly by the construction industry. The advance of the Information and Communication Technology developed the growth of the intelligent building and sustainable development. However, many construction projects are not seriously care about the cost and values of the building but only the appearance and smart looking buildings. It is important to show the building owner to minimize the production cost and increase the profit while at the same time provides the comfort, safer and effective buildings. For this purpose, this paper describes the life cycle cost as the main economic method used in the construction industry because it can identify and evaluate the cost saving for the building. The aim of this paper is to determine the challenges of the life cycle costing in the construction industry. This paper also identifies the criteria of the intelligent building and the integration of the life cycle cost in the intelligent building. The main sources used in the literature research are taken from the books, journals, articles, and internet based. The results of this research will give the useful reference materials to the researcher and also for the construction industry in Malaysia

    AN APPRAISAL OF THE QUALITY OF SANDCRETE BLOCKS USED FOR CONSTRUCTION IN LAGOS METROPOLIS

    Sandcrete blocks have been in use in many parts of the world for a very long time. The prominence of sandcrete blocks as part of the local building materials that make up the wall units in a building or any construction work cannot be underestimated because houses are mostly built of blocks. This paper examines the quality of machine-vibrated hollow sandcrete blocks used on construction sites in Lagos metropolis. A total of sixty (60) units of machine-vibrated sandcrete blocks were sampled from ten (10) manufacturers within Lagos Mainland. Three (3) samples of 450mm x 225mm x 225mm blocks and another three (3) of 450mm x 150mm x 225mm blocks were selected from each of the 10 manufacturers to make the total of 60 blocks. Also, a total of forty (40) units of machine-vibrated sandcrete blocks were produced based on the requirements of the NIS 87:2004 standards for sandcrete blocks. The blocks obtained from manufacturers as well as those produced were tested to determine their quality in terms of three parameters which were the compressive strength, density and dimensional tolerance. The results obtained revealed that the compressive strength of the blocks obtained from manufacturers ranged from 0.21N/mm2 to 1.26N/mm2 for 225mm wide blocks and from 0.28N/mm2 to 0.95N/mm2 for 150mm wide blocks which are far below the minimum NIS requirements of 3.45N/mm2 and 2.5N/mm2 respectively. The densities of these blocks were found to be satisfactory with the requirements of the standard while the dimensions were inaccurate in terms of web thicknesses. It was recommended that the regulatory bodies should be empowered to control production processes and implement effective strategies such as mobile testing to ascertain the quality of sandcrete blocks

    Pembentukan imej destinasi adalah penting bagi pembangunan sektor pelancongan, khususnya dari aspek pemasaran destinasi pelancongan. Salah satu elemen yang membentuk imej destinasi adalah berdasarkan sumber maklumat yang disalur menggunakan media komunikasi yang moden. Namun, kepentingan mengkaji apakah imej yang sering ditonjolkan oleh sumber maklumat tersebut masih kurang dijalankan. Justeru, tujuan penulisan ini adalah untuk mengenaplasti imej destinasi untuk negeri Sabah dari perspektif pelancong yangberkunjung ke negeri tersebut.     Ruang pembelajaran merupakan sumber fizikal utama kepada Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Awam(IPTA) di Malaysia. Secara umumnya ruang di dalam universiti adalah hak milik dan diuruskan olehpihak universiti itu sendiri. Pihak universiti bertanggungjawab sepenuhnya ke atas ruang yangdigunakan oleh warga kampus termasuk orang yang berkepentingan. Namun begitu kepentingankajian sumber fizikal IPTA ini masih belum disedari oleh sesetengah organisasi. Pengurusan ruangpembelajaran merupakan salah satu pengurusan yang terpenting dalam pengurusan sumber fizikaldi IPTA. Pengurusan ruang dianggap penting bukan sahaja dari segi pengoptiman tetapi jugaberkaitan dengan kos operasi penyenggaraan. Maka implikasi kos berkaitan dengan sumber fizikalkepada IPTA adalah besar.
