Salah Tanggapan Terhadap Kubah Pada Senibina Masjid: Pengaruh Pengisian Sejarah Dalam Hasrat Rekabentuk Masjid

    Get PDF

A CASE STUDY OF DAMPNESS IN A THREE BEDROOM RESIDENTIAL BUILDING IN KUMASI, GHANA

    No full text
Buildings are composites of different materials and forms of construction and each has its own specific performance characteristics. Despite the lasting qualities of buildings, they are all susceptible to natural and man-made mechanisms of deterioration, one of which is dampness. This study employed a holistic approach to dampness investigation involving a two stage protocol which sought to identify and document areas in the walls of a three bedroom residential facility severely affected by dampness. The results from the visual inspection showed that blistering of paint, flaking of mortar, cracks, mould growth and surface efflorescence were symptoms identified on the walls of the building. Also, the results from the moisture content measurements (non-destructive tests) showed that though the walls located in all the four orientations experienced dampness, it was very pronounced in the walls located in the western, eastern and southern directions. The results further showed that with the exception of rising dampness, no other source(s) of dampness existed. Further detailed destructive tests are recommended for the confirmation of the source of dampness present and this will help to put in place appropriate intervention mechanisms to address the problem. This study should provide the necessary platform for construction professionals in Ghana and other tropical countries with similar geological settings like Ghana to educate themselves on this common but dangerous problem

Psychologically impacted houses may be a new context in Malaysia but the term psychological impacted or defects have been distinguished in the United States and Australia. With the increases of wrongdoing these days, there is a possibility that the crime will result in death in a house. This paper focused on the issues of psychologically impacted houses with respect to the discernment of the society towards these houses and the problems in marketing these tainted properties. A study is carried out to acquire the data on the level of superstitious convictions that are still practiced by the Malaysian society. The relationship between superstition and psychologically impacted houses are being discussed as the perception of the society towards the stigmatized houses is clouded by their superstitious beliefs. The issues in regards to the marketability of psychologically impacted houses are highlighted through the findings obtained from interviews with estate agents and negotiators. Thus, the main aim of this paper is to ascertain the dilemma faced by estate agents and negotiators when marketing houses with psychological defects. Recommendations are made to help the estate agents and negotiators to see things clear with respect to the disclosure of information of the houses

TOWARDS DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABILITY INTEGRATION FRAMEWORK FOR BUILDING PROJECT

    Get PDF
Sustainable building projects are naturally different from conventional projects due to the requirement of special materials and building practices, as well as the management commitment to sustainability. Therefore, a sustainable building project requires additional considerations on many aspects more than the conventional project. Although there are many researches on the paybacks of a sustainable building, nevertheless, huge numbers of barriers also contributes to the multiple failing of the projects within the market such as knowledge gaps, communication shortfall, ownership structure and operating cost responsibility, funding issues and the risks, and other technical and process issues. Many researchers believe that project planning process holds the strategic position in overcoming the barriers all together. Modifications should be made to the traditional planning process and practices in order to minimize risks and improve the chances of delivering the project successfully.  This paper offers ideas and recommendations on the initial concept of sustainability integration strategies that can be practiced throughout the project planning process towards delivering a successful performance of a sustainable building. The concept is very useful to be a starting point for the development of a practical ‘Sustainability Integration Framework’ during the planning process of a sustainable building project in the future

EVALUATION OF SOUND ATTENUATION EFFECT IN RECORDING STUDIOS: CASE OF ANGEL FM STATION IN KUMASI, GHANA

    Get PDF
Cities in developing countries like Ghana experience severe environmental noise pollution resulting predominantly from a blend of exponential increase in road traffic volume, industrial, commercial and residential activities that are associated with thick population trends. High levels of noise pollution can have detrimental effects on human beings. Buildings that house noise sensitive activities such as recording studios in city centres need to be designed to provide protection from high ambient noise levels that may interfere with speech communication. Cities and towns in Ghana have about one hundred and eighty Frequency Modulation (FM) stations that are invariably sited in the Central Business Districts (CBD) that happen to be in very noisy environments. The study investigated prevailing sound levels in the recording studio and associated spaces in an FM Station in  Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana. Data collection approaches involved monitoring of indoor and outdoor sound levels, interviewing of residents and workers of the community to assess their perception of noise levels. In addition measured drawings of the facilities and  some observations were undertaken. The data was analysed within the context of the study objectives. Monitored sound levels were compared to set standards by World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO permissible ambient noise level limits of 45dB to 55dB and 55dB to 65dB for residential and commercial zones respectively were exceeded for all outdoor monitored values. However, the sound attenuating capabilities of the FM Station building maintains sound levels in the recording studios that are within permissible sound limits. It is expected that the findings of this study will contribute in assisting designers to make more objective design decisions at the preliminary phase of a studio building project, especially in very noisy urban environments

Mosque, as a symbol of Islamic architecture plays an important role in reflecting the superiority of Allah the Almighty. One of the successful ways is through aesthetical quality. Aesthetic value in the history of Islamic art and architecture is normally portrayed by its motifs and ornamentation that normally applied to the wall surfaces of Islamic buildings. Contemporary mosques, on the other hand, portray its aesthetical quality through the majestic look, emphasized by the existence of domes and minarets. Research on mosque architecture contributed to variety of knowledge. This paper focuses on the application of Islamic art to mosque interior that contributes to the high level of aesthetical value. High degree of aesthetical quality includes the employment of appropriate motifs and ornamentation on mosque interior, thus suggesting that the application of motif and ornamentation to be part of the mosque components and not as mere decorations. The aim is for existing and future Malaysian mosques to have meaningful as well as beautiful interior

SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION THROUGH LIFE CYCLE COSTING

    Get PDF
Sustainable construction refers to the integration of environmental, social and economic considerations into construction business strategies and practices. It is the application of the principles of sustainable development to the comprehensive construction cycle from the extraction of raw materials, through the planning, design and construction of buildings and infrastructure, until their final demolition and management of the resultant waste. The implementation of Life Cycle Costing (LCC) in the sustainable construction industry is significantly important to construct the structures and infrastructure projects that will meet all the principles of sustainability. During the process of developing a project, LCC principles and techniques aim to provide best value from a whole life perspective. This paper, in reviewing the application of life cycle costing and sustainable construction, explores the correlation between these two elements and assesses how these can be used to achieve sustainability over the whole life of building projects
