Construction Post Occupancy Evaluation studies, especially those related to students’ hostels has received worldwide attention. However, this has not been the case in Ghana. This study sought to evaluate the performance of two postgraduate hostel buildings (Steven Paris Hostel and Transport Hostel) on Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus with regards to services rendered by management, functionality and environmental friendliness. The objective was to investigate the level of students’ satisfaction with some selected facilities and services available at the hostels. A survey of 70 postgraduate students who were residents of the two hostels were conducted to achieve the objective of the study. Data obtained from the survey was analyzed by Relative Satisfaction Index (RSI) and mean aggregate RSIs. The findings from the study revealed that occupants are generally “Satisfied” (Mean Aggregate RSI of 68.05) with the facilities and services available at the postgraduate hostels. The occupants showed high satisfaction level with the bedroom, television room, bathroom, kitchen, meeting room, support services and lobbies. However, they were indecisive about their satisfaction with management of the hostels and the laundry room. The feedbacks obtained from the occupants should inform any decisions regarding future renovations and effective management of the hostels. The study recommends effective POEs and maintenance management practices for the institution’s hostel facilities to improve the comfort of users

Research in Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) shows that IEQ is not just limited to indoor air and comfort but also the contribution factor and its effects. IEQ could give an impact to the level of performance and productivity. IEQ in educational buildings have been studied widely especially in the cold region climate, however, studies on IEQ in the tropical climate like Malaysia is still lacking. The factors, effects, and solutions vary from other countries due to different climate, culture and learning activities. It is still unknown whether the school users in Malaysia are aware that IEQ would affect their teaching and learning behaviour as well as their health and well-being if the IEQ in the teaching and learning spaces are in unacceptable condition. Therefore, this paper seeks to investigate the school users’ perception on IEQ in SMK Meru located in the Klang valley, Malaysia. Methods of approach are the objective method measuring the physical environment, and the subjective approach focusing on the visual inspection and distribution of questionnaire to the school users including teachers, students and office staff. Acoustic quality was found to be the most contributing factor to the dissatisfaction level of the respondents which could affect the teaching and learning performance. Three major health problems that were noted are fatigue eyes, stress/tension and fatigue but the condition was not serious

Environmental Quality Perception (EQP) is constructed to help in environmental studies and as anassessment tool for the environment and behaviour field studies. Using EQP assessment method inthe hospital environment studies helps to understand the relationship between people and thehospital environment. Achieving sufficient thermal comfort level in existing government hospitalbuildings were seriously considered especially in general wards where patients and staffs most spendtime in. The assessments were completed by 120 respondents (i.e. patients and staff nurse) from fivedifferent general wards located in different blocks in a Malaysian public hospital. To assess perceptionvalidity, one is focusing on objective physical observation evaluating the hospital environmentcorrelated with subjective evaluation through questionnaire on social environment. The main objectiveof this research is to investigate the users’ perceptions of existing thermal comfort quality in thedifferent department’s general wards of existing government hospitals in providing comparative tableshowing the different performance of thermal comfort. Overall reliability on thermal satisfaction by theoccupants shows significant differences in all identified variables that were influenced by location andcharacteristic of the buildings as well as the respondents demographic. Mixed method analyses wereused whereby data responds were analysed by multivariate (MANOVA) and univariate (ANOVA)analyses of variance for quantitative and triangulation analyses were tabled down for qualitativebetween average responses of thermal comfort perceived with the hospital physical. The findingsconcluded with majority perceived moderation on most thermal comfort elements indicates that therewere growing acceptance and tolerance with the space that are subjected to duration of admitted andhours of working. Therefore, further investigation should be carried out to enhance the probability inperceptions with multiple hospitals for clear comparisons

The concept of coastal tourism includes the various ranges of tourism, leisure and recreational activities with provision of facilities and infrastructure to support the industry. This paperreports the findings of local community concerns toward the sitting of the three main resorts which are Malaysia’s premier resorts at a macro scale which results can represent the trend of other resorts in Malaysia.A case studyof three premier resorts representing the northern, central and southern region of the West coast of Malaysian Peninsula which include Langkawi Island, Pangkor Island and Port Dicksonwhile an depth interview of 40 interviewees from the localcommunity in the three case study site were conducted. The investigation reveals that the sitting, design and construction of coastal resorts are done without the consent of the localcommunities thereby does not promote their custom, belief system and tradition. The paper gives clear understanding of the benefit or disadvantages of coastal tourism development to the local communities; it also presented views of the local community towards coastal resort developments in the three case study sites. The results presented could justify the selection ofother case study sites towards enhancing tourists’ experience in coastal resort of the west Malaysia peninsula

APPROPRIATE GEOMETRICAL RATIO MODELING OF ATRIUM FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN OFFICE BUILDINGS

Atrium refers to an open interior space that can be potentially related to an exterior environment. Indeed, atrium is considered as a filter and obstacle blocking undesirable exterior environmental phenomena such as rain, snow and wind. A well designed atrium can contribute to have a significant effect on both; the building's energy performance and indoor environmental conditions. In this paper, the aim is to study the effect of atrium ratio on energy efficiency and comfort of the occupants in an office building in the city of Tehran. In this work, the length to width ratio of the office buildings is identified and the average height of these buildings and validated appropriateness are examined by field studies. The simulation modellings of Design Builder Software is used to model various aspects of the building such as building materials, architecture construction, heating, cooling and lighting systems. One way ANOVA and Duncan’s multiple range tests are used to determine the differences of daylight and compare their averages in different models. It is shown that by decreasing the ratio of atrium to total building area from 1:2 to 1:10, the annual energy consumption reduces i.e., the highest and lowest annual consumed energy belong to the ratio of 1:2 and 1:10, respectively. Whereas from 1:2 to 1:10 ratio, regular downtrend has been occurred to received daylighting factors by the models. According to ANOVA performed on the intensity of daylight’s received height, significant differences were detected in different models with different atrium area ratios.Overall, the results show that ratio of atrium to total building area of 1:4 is the most efficient selection in terms of energy performance, daylighting and thermal comfort

Heritage conservation in Palestine, through still in its early stage of development, is a growing area of interest to Palestinians. Success of the conservation of cultural resources is challenged by the absence of a defined mechanism for conservation and the lack of an infrastructure that supports conservation practice. The objective of this research is to develop a comprehensive-regional approach for the identification, evaluation, and management of historical and cultural resources in Palestine; taking into consideration local culture, values, dynamics, and context. This comprehensive approach recognizes and incorporates the significance of a broader range of historical and cultural resources with diverse meanings and significance to different individuals and the broader range of the population, and which are important for Palestinian national, local, and place identity and sovereignty. Depending on four sources of information (field reconnaissance-level survey, public meetings and workshop, conservation questionnaire, and case studies), the researcher divides the methodology for conservation in Palestine into three interrelated and overlapping parts; part one deals with establishing a strong knowledge base, part two involves creating a pro-conservation infrastructure and environment, and part three implements different levels of interventions and management
