DEVELOPMENT OF ENERGY BENCHMARKING OF MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS AND ANALYSIS OF ENERGY SAVINGS OPPORTUNITIES
There has been a growing interest in the Malaysian government on the issue of energy efficiency and the environment. This study presents the investigation and analysis of electrical energy performance characteristics of government hospital buildings in Malaysia. A generic questionnaire was developed to collect energy data of all government hospital buildings and a regression analysis was performed based on the feedback to predict the annual energy consumption of a Malaysian hospital building. Using the available surveyed data a generic hospital energy benchmark in Malaysia was developed and the surveyed data was also used to construct a typical base-case hospital building model using Energy Plus software. Using building simulation method with local weather data, areas of energy savings opportunities and its cost effectiveness are investigated. Simulation using selected cost effective energy savings measures suggests that the Annual Electrical Energy Use Index (EEUI) of the base-case hospital building model can be significantly reduced to as much as 28.85% with a simple payback of 3.7 years by applying energy saving measures such as improved glazing, lighting as well as optimization of ventilation and cooling system
EVALUATING POSSIBLE INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE APPROACH OF MOSQUE IN CONTEMPORARY WORLD
Mosque is one of the major establishment within a Muslim community in countries with Muslim majority as well as countries where Muslims are minority. It is almost inevitable that every Muslim community would have at least one mosque within the locality. For most of the cases in Muslim major countries, there are more than one mosque to be found in any locality. These carries the sign of different ideologies and isms of architecture according to their contextual variance. In contemporary world, where environmental issues are given high priority, identifying sustainable approach for designing mosques are strongly recommended. This paper aims to analyze the principles of Islamic teachings toward attaining a balanced built environment and its implication on developing a sustainable language for mosque architecture in contemporary world. It analyzes the indigenous characteristics of the Prophet's (pbuh) mosque and draws lessons from therein. It also presents discussion on the contemporary Polder Mosque in Netherlands and its innovative sustainable features. Recommendations are made consequently regarding sustainable approach of mosque design in the contemporary world at the end of this paper. MANAGING WASTE IN REFURBISHMENT PROJECTS IN KLANG VALLEY
Waste has been a major problem in the construction industry. Not only waste has an impact on the efficiency of construction industry but it also causing negative impact to the environment and moreover the total project cost. There are a lot of researches on sustainable construction industry but not they are not related it with refurbishment project in details. Parties involve in refurbishment project encounter numerous causes of waste generation and uncertainty in managing waste. This papers aims to identify variable that contribute to waste in refurbishment projects and implementation of effective waste management in construction industry. A questionnaire survey to 172 respondents has conducted to several professions in refurbishment projects. The methodologies used are by survey. Through survey and analysis processes, all the collected data were analyzed using quantitative statistical analysis package software. The correlation tests between the dependent, intervening and independent variables would determine the relationships among of the group of variables shown in theoretical framework. Once the survey revealed waste contribution factors and the effectiveness of waste, a set of findings and recommendations are proposed for better handling waste management in refurbishment projects. The recommendation listed out and discussed will enhance the waste minimization for the construction industry and hopefully the readers of this research could find something useful information for their own ongoing or future refurbishment projects

RENEWABLE INDOOR RADIANT COOLING AND EARTH TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER HYBRID FOR THERMAL COMFORT IMPROVEMENT
This study investigates the applicability of hydronic radiant cooling system charged with night cooled water to cool down building in Sarawak particularly for low income building to a thermally acceptable level. The system uses night sky as well as the ground as a heat sink source to passively cool the building while operating at a low energy level. Results from building energy simulation program or Energy Plus shows that for a stand-alone hydronic radiant system only 77% of the time the thermal condition could meet ASHRAE acceptable PMV thermal condition between -0.5 and + 0.5. Another simulation of the radiant and earth tube system hybrid further improved the indoor thermal condition significantly by 100% to meet the same PMV level. The hybrid system was able to improve the baseline uncomfortable operative temperature of 37oC to 28.5oC while meeting the average comfort zone upper limit for Malaysia of 30.1 oC. Simulation on energy spent shows that as much as 94% energy could be saved by using the hybrid system. This level of saving is not impossible as renewable night cooled water was used to charge the indoor hydronic radiant cooling system
SERAMBI: THE DISTINCTIVE SPATIAL CHARACTERISTIC OF A MALAY TRADITIONAL HOME
The serambi is a pronounced interior space within the Malay traditional home design, particularly for the Negeri Sembilan Malays in Rembau, the context of this exploratory case study research. This paper presents the interpretations of cultural values and socio-cultural viewpoint on the quality of life derived from critical, comprehensive literature reviews within the serambi context. ‘Cultural values’ concluded to be the infused refinement of the Adat Perpatih, through the inculcation of the custom in all aspects of serambi design. The local Malay community’s socio-cultural viewpoint on the quality of life, therefore, theorized as the inclusion of cultural values within their home design. Keywords: socio-cultural values; quality of life; home environment; matrilineal Mala
BUILT AND FORGOTTEN: UNVEILING THE DEFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE GHANA COCOA BOARD (COCOBOD) JUBILEE HOUSE IN KUMASI
Lack of attention given to government buildings in Ghana has resulted in the deplorable states of such buildings. This study sought to identify and examine key defects associated with the Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) Regional Office building in Kumasi. A mixed research strategy which involved the use of on-site building observations and case studies was adopted. A checklist was prepared to assist in the identification of the defects, and the on-site building inspection assisted in examining the key defects identified. The findings from the study revealed that peeling of paints, leakages in ceilings, staining/discolouration of walls, dampness in walls and floors, electrical defects and cracked walls were among the key defects associated with the building. The on-site inspection carried out confirmed the severity of these defects, and revealed that the building was in a deplorable state. Though this study may not indicate the entire scenario of the deplorable states of many government buildings, it tries to explore some common defects affecting one of such buildings and the need to pay attention to them. The findings from this study provides the platform for all stakeholders involved to come together and fight the deteriorating states of government buildings in the country
