THE IMPACT OF HOSPITAL EVACUATION ROUTE DESIGNS ON BRAINWAVE ACTIVITY AND WAYFINDING COGNITION PERFORMANCE DURING FIRE EVACUATION
In hospital buildings, fires are a significant risk, and occupants’ failure to evacuate can result in death. Therefore, efficient hospital fire evacuation is important. Hospital evacuation routes are among the most challenging to design due to complex indoor environments and restricted circulation. Additionally, not every hospital user has spatial familiarity due to the restricted public access, making it difficult to navigate unfamiliar evacuation routes. Human wayfinding, which involves wayfinding cognition performance, has a big impact on how effectively one can carry out navigational tasks. To ensure safe evacuation, aspects of hospital physical design, in particular evacuation routes, must be improved. However, when outlining the ideal evacuation route design, hospital building guidelines rarely take wayfinding cognition aspects into account. A neuroscientific understanding of the relationship between hospital evacuation route designs and wayfinding cognition is timely given the emergence of neuroarchitecture research which applies neuroscientific methodologies in architectural studies for more accurate assessment of human behaviour. This article proposes a neuroarchitecture framework outlining a clear relationship between these aspects through critical review of the literature whereby potential applications of EEG brainwaves are also highlighted. Findings can promote hospital evacuation route designs that optimize wayfinding cognition performance to ensure occupants’ safety
THE UTILISATION OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL FOR MODERN RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
The construction materials is a part of determining the tenants' true comfort. The construction material has an impact on the vision of a structure since it deals with the building's façade. Timber is a great insulating material that helps to maintain room temperature compared to other materials. Timber helps to reduce heating and associated energy requirements. However, few studies has investigate timber as the appropriate response to design materials to reduce climatic discomfort in a tropical weather. This paper is to investigate the characteristics of timber used in traditional house that address the climatic issue for modern residential projects.A quantitative questionnaire survey have been employed to 30 respondents that living in a timber modern houses. The findings show that suitability of construction material, thermal comfort, low thermal conductivity, awareness of climatic response play a significant role in designing a modern residential project
A RESILIENCE SAFETY CLIMATE APPROACH AMONG CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS
Construction industry is one of the most injury-prone industries. Construction workers face risks culture in which safety is sometimes neglected. Safety climate culture in construction projects can include management commitment, safety training, safety communication, housekeeping and safety equipment, and work pressure supervision. There are three objectives: (1) to identify initiatives on awareness of safety climate approach; (2) to explore factors of safety climate approach; and (3) to investigate strategies on resilience safety climate approach among construction workers in residential projects. Data collection was conducted via a questionnaire survey to 48 respondents among construction workers on residential projects in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The data were then analysed using the means score of descriptive analysis and path modeling method of Structural Equation Modeling - Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM) via smartPLS software. Findings show that equipment on site, employees’ support, and transparent procedures are keys to have safety climate among construction workers and on-site. In implementing these key elements, initiatives to raise awareness to prevent accidents and mitigate any risks at construction sites. Thus, it would be beneficial to the employees to avoid deep compensation post-incidents and to the construction workers in terms of their safety and well-being
COVID-19 Impact on Dispute Resolution – The Utilization of Mediation in the Settlement of Construction Disputes in Malaysia
COVID-19 has a profound effect on all facets of life, particularly the construction industry. It has also affected the conflict resolution in construction dispute resolution. Due to the impact of this pandemic, there will be a great deal of conflict among the parties involved. Even though many in the construction industry favour mediation, it is nonetheless employed significantly less frequently than adjudication and other conflict resolution techniques. Despite the efforts of Malaysian government to introduce the COVID-19 Mediation Centre or more known as PMC-19 as a tool for resolving disputes during COVID-19, the use of mediation remains minimal. This study intends to establish the use of mediation in settling construction conflicts in Malaysia during the COVID-19 outbreak. The objectives of the research are to identify the effect of the COVID-19 outbreak on mediation, to analyse the causes of mediation for not being fully utilised, and to appraise the approach to increase the usage of mediation as a dispute resolution method during COVID-19 outbreak in Malaysia. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Findings indicated that COVID-19 has replaced face-to-face mediation procedures with online mediation. In addition, many approaches to increasing the use of mediation as a means of settling construction disputes have been identified, the most significant of which would be the enforcement of mediation settlement by the Malaysian government. Future research should focus on the input from mediators, contractors, and all construction players to improve the usage of mediation as a settlement of construction disputes in Malaysia
EVALUATION OF ARCHITECTURE STUDENT CLASSROOM COMMUNICATION AT UNIVERSITI KEBANGSAAN MALAYSIA
Classroom communication is a very important and complex aspect in teaching and learning. Its complexity is attributed to a host of factors that include participants, messages, encoding, de-coding, and channels. Not much is currently known concerning classroom communication in the context of architecture education in Malaysian universities. This paper evaluates classroom communication of students undertaking architecture degree programs at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Four factors of student classroom communication were investigated to understand student abilities and issues in classroom communication. Forty-four students undertook the self-administered survey. The majority of the students exhibited good non-verbal communication practices, and scored favourably in the aspect of adapting the way they communicate to others. However, students seemed to have some difficulty to express ideas in class presentations. Additionally, some students appeared to be handicapped in actively participating and leading class discussions. Last but not least, a number of students were not comfortable in using English in the classroom, but not to the extent of hindering them in participating in classroom discussions. Further studies are needed to uncover classroom communication issues in student learning among architecture students at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia

SUSTAINABLE APPROACH FOR UNIVERSITY CLINIC; A CASE STUDY OF STACK EFFECT SYSTEM.
In order to keep the indoor climate comfortable without the need of mechanical ventilation, a well-designed building will stimulate air movement toward the interior sections. However, in cases where the air is not being circulated correctly or when the external wind speed is low, stack ventilation may be a reliable option. There is a lot of emphasis on the importance of good ventilation in hospitals and other medical centres. The air quality, the amount of air circulating around the clinic, and the effects on the patients are all factors in how efficient the ventilation mode is. Ventilation through openings such as windows and doors occur naturally when an interior pressure difference exists above the exterior pressure. Stack ventilation and wind driven ventilation are the most popular forms of natural ventilation. The fundamental objectives of this research are to (1) describe stack effects, and (2) determine a strategy in adopting stack effects system into clinic design
