    Doppler Frequency Estimation in Tensor-Based Modulation via Post-CPD Maximum Likelihood

    International audienceTensor-Based Modulation (TBM) is a novel wave-form design enabling efficient unsourced massive random access(UMAC) for future wireless networks. By leveraging tensoralgebra and Canonical Polyadic Decomposition (CPD), TBMallows to perform blind user separation at the receiver. However,the impact of Doppler frequency shifts on TBM has not yetbeen addressed. This paper shows that Doppler effects remainencoded mode-wise within the TBM factors, and hence do notdisrupt the blind user separation approach. Furthermore, theDoppler shifts associated to each user can be accurately esti-mated through a post-CPD per-user Maximum-Likelihood (ML)estimator. Simulation results show that the proposed approachonly requires a limited number pilot symbols while achievingaccurate Doppler recovery at low SNRs, thereby restoring thedecoding performance to a level nearly identical to the ideal zero-Doppler case. This makes the proposed approach well suited forshort-packet URLLC and IoT scenarios

    Bacterial growth in poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel with nutrients and indicator

    International audienceBacterial culture has traditionally been a widely used method for isolating and detecting bacteria, particularly in the food industry. However, the conventional culture method is now considered outdated, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. To overcome these limitations, a dried thin film medium known as Petrifilm has been developed for various bacterial culture applications. In this study, a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel was developed as an innovative approach for thin film bacterial culture. This hydrogel, incorporating bromothymol blue (BB) and tryptic soy broth (TSB), referred to as BBTH, was synthesized in different thicknesses using freeze-thaw techniques. Comprehensive hydrogel characterization was performed to determine the optimal hydrogel for bacterial culture. The suitability of BBTH for bacterial cultivation was validated using Escherichia coli ATCC25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, representing Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, respectively. The results demonstrated the successful synthesis of BBTH hydrogel in five different thicknesses. Among these variants, 2-BBTH (thickness 0.50 ± 0.01 mm) exhibited the most favorable properties, including ideal thickness, high transparency, water absorption, clear representation of bacterial growth, and colony formation. Compared to the conventional method using tryptic soy agar (TSA), 2-BBTH yielded comparable results, with observable bacterial colonies at the same concentration. This study highlights the potential of BBTH as a promising alternative for developing innovative commercial bacterial culture platform

    Parenting and empathy capabilities drive brain response to pain cues in baby cries

    International audienceThe ability of human caregivers to decode and respond to the distress information encoded in a baby's cries is essential for the baby's survival. What are the factors that influence this aptitude, and how is this represented in the brain? Although previous neuroimaging studies have shown that hearing cries activates a set of brain areas that drive caregiver response behaviors, they have mainly focused on adults with parenting experience, especially mothers, and have not explored how the level of pain expressed in the cry modulates caregiver brain activation. In this study, we combine fMRI studies on a large sample of parents and nonparents with ground-breaking voice resynthesis tools enabling us to systematically control the level of pain expressed by babies' cries. We show that pain cries induce more specialized brain activation in parents than in nonparents, with greater connectivity within and between networks involved in mentalizing, emotional regulation, and vigilance. Mothers show higher overall connectome activity than fathers. Yet, it is among parents with the greatest emotional empathy—both fathers and mothers—that vocal roughness (a marker of distress in baby cries) most actively recruits the parental vigilance brain network. By taking advantage of acoustic resynthesis, which allows precise control over sound stimuli, and by paying attention to the ability to understand the emotions of others rather than focusing solely on sex, our study highlights that parental status interacts with empathetic capabilities to modulate how the brains of human adults respond when a baby's cry signals distress

    Ce dossier, dirigé Édouard Coquet et Claude Prudhomme, se penche sur un élément majeur de la transformation du modèle missionnaire catholique en Afrique subsaharienne à la fin de la période coloniale : le développement du clergé local.Les contributions mettent en valeur la multiplicité des acteurs concernés. L’accès progressif des prêtres autochtones à des responsabilités dans l’organisation missionnaire est encouragé par le Vatican ; mais les missionnaires sont souvent convaincus de retarder le mouvement par les préjugés raciaux et la volonté de maintenir leur position dominante dans la société coloniale. La mise en évidence des prêtres d’Afrique comme acteurs de l’histoire religieuse, mais aussi sociale, politique et culturelle de l’entrée dans l’ère de la décolonisation, est l’objectif principale du dossier

    Simultaneous probe of the charm and bottom quark Yukawa couplings using ttH events

    International audienceA search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, H \toccˉ\mathrm{c\bar{c}}, produced in association with a top quark-antiquark pair (ttˉ\mathrm{t\bar{t}}H) is presented. The search is performed with data from proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1^{-1}. Advanced machine learning techniques are employed for jet flavor identification and event classification. The Higgs boson decay to a bottom quark-antiquark pair is measured simultaneously and the observed ttˉ\mathrm{t\bar{t}}H bb event rate relative to the standard model expectation is 0.91±0.22+0.26\pm^{+0.26}_{-0.22}. The observed (expected) upper limit on the product of production cross section and branching fraction σσ(ttˉ\mathrm{t\bar{t}}H)B\mathcal{B}(H \toccˉ\mathrm{c\bar{c}}) is 0.11 (0.13±0.04+0.06\pm^{+0.06}_{-0.04}) pb at 95% confidence level, corresponding to 7.8 (8.7±2.6+4.0\pm^{+4.0}_{-2.6}) times the standard model prediction. When combined with the previous search for H \to ccˉ\mathrm{c\bar{c}} via associated production with a W or Z boson, the observed (expected) 95% confidence interval on the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling modifier, κcκ_\mathrm{c}, is κc\lvert{κ_\mathrm{c}}\rvert <\lt 3.5 (2.7), the most stringent constraint to date

    Backstepping for partial differential equations: A survey

    International audienceSystems modeled by partial differential equations (PDEs) are at least as ubiquitous as those by nature finite-dimensional and modeled by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). And yet, systematic and readily usable methodologies, for such a significant portion of real systems, have been historically scarce. Around the year 2000, the backstepping approach to PDE control began to offer not only a less abstract alternative to PDE control techniques replicating optimal and spectrum assignment techniques of the 1960s, but also enabled the methodologies of adaptive and nonlinear control, matured in the 1980s and 1990s, to be extended from ODEs to PDEs, allowing feedback synthesis for systems that are uncertain, nonlinear, and infinite-dimensional. The PDE backstepping literature has since grown to hundreds of papers and nearly a dozen books. This survey aims to facilitate the entry into this thriving area of overwhelming size and topical diversity. Designs of controllers and observers, for parabolic, hyperbolic, and other classes of PDEs, in one or more dimensions, with nonlinear, adaptive, sampled-data, and event-triggered extensions, are covered in the survey. The lifeblood of control are technology and physics. The survey places a particular emphasis on applications that have motivated the development of the theory and which have benefited from the theory and designs: flows, flexible structures, materials, thermal and chemically reacting dynamics, energy (from oil drilling to batteries and magnetic confinement fusion), and vehicles
