    New analytical tools to assess the occurrence of ultra-polar pesticides and their transformation products in drinking water

    Plant protection products used in agriculture contain molecules specifically designed to be toxic to target organisms. However, their use can also have unintended effects, posing potential risks to ecosystems and non-target organisms, including humans. Research has deepened our understanding of the links between exposure to these substances and the effects observed in the environment. In particular, studies have highlighted how even low levels of exposure can cause chronic effects on non-target organisms and disrupt ecosystems. These findings underscore the importance of quantifying and characterising these exposures in order to better assess their potential impacts on human health and the environment.International audienceThe PESPOT project aims to carry out a broad mapping of pesticide residues present in drinking water, with a particular focus on persistent and polar organic molecules, using non-targeted analytical approaches based on high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). High method sensitivity and long-term contaminant integration were achieved through the optimisation and deployment of passive samplers combining complementary phases in terms of physicochemical properties to characterise a wide contamination profile. The identified molecules were then analysed across continuums (resource/treatment/distribution), enabling the connection between the water source and distributed water. This initiative aims to provide new data on water contamination to distributors, local authorities and public decision-makers, thereby contributing to discussions on the regulatory monitoring of phytopharmaceuticals in drinking water

    South Caucasus greening and Neolithisation: What happened 8200 years ago?

    International audienceIn the South Caucasus, located north of the Fertile Crescent and between Black and Caspian Seas, the Neolithic way of life emerged relatively late, around 6000 BCE (8000 cal BP). This delay, compared with regions such as Anatolia or the Kopet Dag, has long been discussed by archaeologists and generally attributed to geographical or technical constraints. Climate has also been considered a key factor, particularly the 8.2 ka event, which is often linked to the spread of farming and herding from the Fertile Crescent into neighbouring regions. This event is believed to have triggered a transition from hunter-gathering to agropastoralism. However, its direct impact on the South Caucasus remains debated. Recent palaeoenvironmental studies indicate that the region underwent a major ecological transformation around 8200 cal BP, coinciding with the Early–Middle Holocene Transition. This period was characterised by increased precipitation. As a result, vegetation expanded, particularly grasslands dominated by Poaceae, which provided favourable conditions for livestock grazing and fodder production. Unlike the abrupt 8.2 ka event, this longer-term shift significantly reshaped the environment of the South Caucasus. This review argues that it was not the short-term climatic anomaly but rather the sustained increase in precipitation during the Early–Middle Holocene Transition that created the conditions necessary for the emergence of the Caucasian Neolithic. The expansion of vegetation and natural resources provided an ecological basis for the gradual adoption of agriculture and herding, ultimately leading to the development of an agropastoral system in the region

    Planetary health diet with einkorn as a potential preventive strategy to improve interdental microbiota, oral health and quality of life: a pilot clinical trial

    International audienceBackground: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) involve chronic inflammatory mechanisms to which periodontal periodontal dysbiosis may contribute. The Planetary Health Diet (PHD), a sustainable plant-based model for NCD prevention remains poorly explored regarding its impact on the interdental microbiota.Objective: To evaluate whether an einkorn-enriched PHD can reduce interdental microbiota dysbiosis and promote oral and general health.Design: BIOQUALIM was a 3-month, single-arm, uncontrolled longitudinal pilot trial conducted under real-life conditions. Participants reduced their meat consumption by 50% and consumed ≥100g/day of whole-grain einkorn. Interdental microbiota, periodontal indices, digestive comfort, and quality of life were assessed at baseline, one and three months.Results: Total bacterial load (p = 0.0236), Tannerella forsythia (p < 0.001) and Treponema denticola (p < 0.001) decreased significantly. Periodontal health improved significantly-probing depth decreased from 1.14 ± 0.70 mm to 0.58 ± 0.51 mm (p < 0.0001) and clinical attachment loss from 1.33 ± 0.73 mm to 0.60 ± 0.57 mm (p < 0.0001). Gingival inflammation decreased by > 60%, and bleeding on probing decreased by >70% (p = 0.0004). Digestive comfort improved-normalized stool frequency (p = 0.0009) and reduced postprandial drowsiness (p = 0.0196). Quality-oflife scores increased significantly (p = 0.039).Conclusion: An einkorn-enriched PHD was associated with improved interdental microbiota, periodontal health, and well-being, supporting a One Health link between sustainable nutrition, oral microbiota modulation and inflammation-related pathways.

    Raclet: the ramp above critical level endurance test to evaluate critical force in isometric task

    International audiencePurpose. The Ramp Above Critical Level Endurance Test (RACLET) is a novel submaximal test designed to evaluate the parameters of the critical force model without strenuous exercise. This study aimed to validate the RACLET in healthy and pathological populations and to assess its reliability, concurrent validity, and predictive capacity.Methods. Sixteen healthy volunteers and ten patients with respiratory pathologies participated in this study. The RACLET consisted of a decreasing ramp force starting at 60% and ending at 15% of the maximum force for a total duration of 425 s with brief regular maximal voluntary contractions.Results. The goodness of fit for the RACLET model on the maximal contraction force was excellent in both populations (median r2 = 0.95). In patients, RACLET parameters demonstrated excellent reliability (ICC > 0.90). The concurrent validity of the critical force estimate compared with the all-out method was high (error: 0.3±7.4%). The model’s predictive capacity for time-to-exhaustion and fatigue during constant-intensity exercise was excellent (r2 = 0.910 and 0.907, respectively).Conclusion. The RACLET is thus confirmed as a reliable, valid, and feasible method for determining critical force parameters without strenuous exertion. Its strong predictive accuracy for both time-to-exhaustion and fatigue establishes it as a robust submaximal alternative to all-out protocols for use in both healthy and vulnerable populations

    If the non-commutative L p space of SLn(Z) has the completely bounded approximation property for some non-trivial value of p, then some form of the Kakeya conjecture holds in dimension d, for all d ≤ n+12 . The proof relies on a spherical analogue of the following question in Euclidean harmonic analysis, that we raise and investigate: does a radially symmetric Fourier multiplier that is bounded on Lp(R d ) for some p ̸ = 2 necessarily have a continuous symbol? We leave the question open, but we prove that the primitive of such function is smooth in the sense of Zygmund, give some necessary conditions for Lp-boundedness in terms of Besov spaces and Littlewood-Paley decomposition for the symbol, and observe that a negative answer implies some form of the Kakeya conjecture in dimension d. We then provide spherical forms of these results, which, when combined with a refinement of Lafforgue's rank 0 reduction, leads to the claimed result.</div
