International audienceThe genus Sciomesa Tams & Bowden (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Noctuinae: Apameini: Sesamiina) is a predominantly Afrotropical group of stemborer moths whose convoluted taxonomic history needs to be clarified. In this study, a comprehensive examination of specimens in collections was carried out in a complementary manner with molecular analyses, resulting in the following changes: (i) 12 new Sciomesa species are described: S. lalokeli n. sp. and S. metiminko n. sp. from Ethiopia; S. elgonensis n. sp., S. nigra n. sp. and S. simillima n. sp. from Kenya; S. umvoti n. sp. from South Africa; S. iboya n. sp., S. lilomwi n. sp., S. makete n. sp., S. njombe n. sp. and S. tanganyika n. sp. from Tanzania; S. kalinzu n. sp. from Uganda; (ii) four species are reinstated as valid species: three of them, S. constantini Laporte stat. rev., S. etchecopari Laporte stat. rev. and S. mirifica Laporte stat. rev., were previously synonymized with S. mesophaea (Hampson) while S. congitae (Laporte) stat. rev. was previously synonymized with S. boulardi (Laporte); (iii) two species are synonymized: S. minuscula (Laporte) n. syn., which was previously synonymized with S. boulardi, is a synonym of S. congitae, and S. franciscae Laporte n. syn. is a synonym of S. mesophaea; (iv) one species, Sesamia punctipennis Krüger stat. rev., which was transferred to the Sciomesa genus, is removed from the genus Sciomesa andtemporarily reinstated to the genus Sesamia Guenée pending a new combination. A supplemental description for 12 previously described species is also provided: S. boulardi, S. bua Moyal et al., S. constantini, S. etchecopari, S. excelsa (Laporte), S. gnosia Moyal et al., S. mesophaea, S. congitae, S. mirifica, S. renibifida Berio, S. scotochroa (Hampson) and S. venata Fletcher. Host-plant records are provided for 10 Sciomesa species, confirming a pattern of phylogenetic niche conservatism on Poales plants in the Cyperaceae family. Phylogenetic and molecular species delimitation analyses were carried out on a multimarker (four mitochondrial and two nuclear genes) molecular dataset encompassing 63 Sciomesa specimens, 24 species belonging to other genera of Sesamiina, and one representative of the sister subtribe Apameina. This sampling also includes the three Malagasy species (S. betschi Viette, S. janthina Viette and S. oberthueri Viette) whose status is debated. The resulting phylogenetic framework provides the most complete picture of the evolutionary relationships of the genus Sciomesa, and results of topological tests provide further support for removing S. betschi and S. janthina from the genus Sciomesa pending new combinations. The results of molecular species delimitation analyses also overwhelmingly support the species status of the Sciomesa species sampled, even for S. mesophaea, a species with a very wide range in the Afrotropics. These analyses also reveal the existence of up to three potential new species, whose status cannot be ascertained because the sequenced individuals were either extracted at a larval stage or correspond to specimens whose genitalia were not studied when their legs were collected.
Induced tomato defenses mediated by jasmonic acid do not have a major effect on the density of predator biological control agents
International audiencePlants have developed different defense mechanisms to protect themselves from the attack of herbivores. Plant defenses can be categorized into two types: constitutive, which are present before herbivore attack, and induced, which are activated upon attack. Some herbivores have developed the ability to neutralize either or both types of plant defenses, and plant defenses may act against their own interest when they negatively affect herbivore's natural enemies such predator insects and mites. Here we investigated whether herbivore-induced tomato defenses mediated by jasmonic acid (JA) affect the density of predator biological control agents and thus affect biological pest control negatively. Specifically, we assessed predator-herbivore abundances in greenhouse experiments on two tomato genotypes, a wild type (Castlemart) expressing the JA-mediated defense pathway and a mutant of the wild type (def-1) unable to activate this defense path. Plants were infested with either Bemisia tabaci, a pest that suppresses the activation of the JA defense path, or Frankliniella occidentalis, a pest species that induces JA defenses. As predators, we used four species of natural enemies, two phytoseiid mites and two predatory bugs, one of each pair able to colonize tomato crops (Typhlodromus (A.) recki, Macrolophus pygmaeus) and the other not (Amblyseius swirskii, Orius laevigatus). Results suggest that JA-mediated defenses do not have a negative impact on predator density. Instead, glandular trichomes likely contributed to the unsuccessful pest control. Yet, JA-mediated defenses are key for plant protection against herbivore species that cannot avoid this line of defense
Advancing Soil Organic Carbon Prediction: A Comprehensive Review of Technologies, AI, Process‐Based and Hybrid Modelling Approaches
International audienceMeasurement, monitoring, and prediction of soil organic carbon (SOC) are fundamental to supporting climate change mitigation efforts and promoting sustainable agricultural management practices. This review discusses recent advances in methodologies and technologies for SOC quantification, including remote sensing (RS), proximal soil sensing (PSS), artificial intelligence (AI) for SOC modelling (in particular, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL)), biogeochemical modelling, and data fusion. Integrating data from RS, PSS, and other sensors usually leads to good SOC predictions, provided it is supported by careful calibration, validation across diverse pedo‐climatic and land management, and the use of data processing and modelling frameworks. We also found that the accuracy of AI‐driven SOC prediction improves when RS covariates are included. Although DL often outperforms classical ML, there is no single best AI algorithm. By incorporating simulated outputs from biogeochemical model as additional training data for AI, causal relationships in SOC turnover can be incorporated into empirical modelling, while maintaining predictive accuracy. In conclusion, SOC prediction can be enhanced through 1) integrating sensing technologies, 2) applying AI, notably DL, 3) addressing biogeochemical model limitations (assumptions, parameterization, structure), 4) expanding SOC data availability, 5) improving mathematical representation of microbial influences on SOC, and 6) strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation between soil scientists and model developers

Effect of Changes in Farm Management on the Yield and Constituents, Microbiological Quality, Somatic Cell Count and Fatty Acid Profile of the Camel Milk
International audienceBackground The increasing interest in camel milk (CM) worldwide in recent years has increased the need for studies on the properties of CM, which is relatively less studied than other species. Objective The objective of this study was to determine the effects of changes in farm management on daily milk yield (DMY), milk composition and microbiological quality of CM. Methods Yearly changes in milk fat (MFC), protein (MPC), ash (MAC), totals solid (TSC) contents, total bacteria (TBC), coliform (CC), yeast and mould (YMC), somatic cell (SCC) counts and fatty acid profile of CM were determined by monthly taken milk samples and analyses. Results The means of DMY, MFC, MPC, MAC, TSC, TBC, CC, YMC and SCC of milk were 3.53 ± 0.290 kg, 3.80% ± 0.285%, 4.36% ± 0.212%, 0.81% ± 0.013%, 11.95% ± 0.380%, 7.24 × 10 5 cfu/mL, 1.31 × 10 5 cfu/mL, 912 cfu/mL and 2.45 × 10 5 cells/mL, respectively. The effect of the changes (Year 2 vs. Year 1) was statistically significant for MFC, MPC, TSC and Log 10 TBC ( p < 0.05), and significant effects of lactation stage were determined for DMY, MFC, MAC, TSC, Log 10 TBC and Log 10 YMC ( p < 0.05). The highest fatty acid (FA) amount in CM was found for palmitic (C16:0), oleic (C18:1 n 9c), stearic (C18:0), myristic (C14:0) and palmitoleic (C16:1) acids with the concentrations of 31.59% ± 0.45%, 21.88% ± 0.81%, 13.43% ± 0.67%, 12.22% ± 0.26% and 12.18% ± 0.34% of fat, respectively. The correlation coefficients of MFC, MPC and TSC with SCFA and MCFA were moderate and negative but with long chain Fas (LCFA) were positive and moderate. Log 10 SCC was also negatively correlated with total polyunsaturated FAs (PUFA) (−0.414; p < 0.05), SCFA (−0.475; p < 0.01), MCFA (−0.573; p < 0.01) and positively correlated with LCFA (0.588; p < 0.01). Conclusion Although management causes significant changes in composition, TBC and FA profile, CM has high UFA, low SCFA, high LCFA and better atherogenic index (AI). The high microbiological level at the beginning and middle of lactation and the negative correlation of these traits with milk components reveal that various measures should be taken to improve hygienic conditions to process CM into quality products
International audienceThe camel holds a central role in the cultural and economic heritage of southern Morocco, where challenging environmental conditions limit access to pastoral resources. Aim: In May 2022, a study was conducted to observe the feeding behavior of camels in the rangelands of the Guelmim province. The objective was to better understand how these animals manage to utilize their limited resources to meet their requirements. Methods: Fifteen females from five distinct herds were observed daily, considering various aspects such as their management and the pastoral areas utilized. The data were collected from the time the animals left for the pastures until their return to the pen. Results: Browsing was the primary activity, accounting for 54.3% of the time spent, followed by walking (32.6%), resting (12.2%), and drinking (0.9%). Despite arid conditions, the camel maintainsa diverse diet thanks to its ambulatory behavior, browsing up to 82% of the available species, totaling 19 out of 23, mainly perennial wild plants. The monitoring of feed intake allowed for the estimation of daily intake amounts, ranging from 8.3 to 12.3 kg of dry matter. The camel takes small bites from various species, varying from 0.5 to 3.9 g of dry matter per bite, at a rate of 0.3 to 7 bites per minute. Conclusions: The camel managesto adapt its feeding behavior while preserving its environment, regardless of the breeding practices to which it is subjected. Its tendency to move between different plants allows it to adjust to the varying conditions of its habitat.
Do chefs get lost in the sauce? The chefs’ perceptions of the tensions and paradoxes between tradition and modernity in cooking with meat
International audienceThis work aims to identify and understand the various tensions chefs face in reconciling different issues (sustainability, meat cooking, day-to-day management of the restaurant, etc.) through the study of a specific case, the replacement of traditional preparation of stocks and sauces by ready-to-use preparations. Data collected from French chefs (n = 29) were analysed through the prism of paradox theory. Traditional sauce-making is associated by chefs, directly or indirectly, with a set of practices and skills based on techniques, preparations and products that draw on culinary traditions while offering environmental benefits. However, the study shows that chefs tend to use industrial, ready-to-use preparations because of time constraints, convenience, lack of transmission within the profession or regulations (e.g. hygiene rules). The analysis of this replacement highlights paradoxes and tensions linked to the implementation of the new practice, and to performance, especially sustainability performance. The results contribute to the existing literature and assist the restaurant sector and chefs in addressing sustainability challenges.</div
