One meaning and the other: a corpus-based study of the polysemy of "altro" ('other') in Italian
International audienceThis chapter proposes a corpus-based investigation and a semantic analysis of the Italian word "altro" ‘other’, focusing on two values of "altro" identified in the previous literature: difference (D-interpretation) and increment along a scale (M-interpretation). In syntax-based studies, focused on cardinal noun phrases, the two values have been related to distinct syntactic positions occupied by "altro" within the NP’s extended projection (Cinque 2015, Kayne 2021): a lower position, associated with the D-interpretation (altro N = ‘other kind of N’), and a higher position, associated with the M-interpretation (altri n N = ‘n more tokens of N’). Conversely, discourse-based studies assume that the two values are due to a lexical ambiguity of "altro", with the D-interpretation being triggered by a discourse relation of contrast and the M-interpretation by an additive relation (Gianollo and Mauri 2020). We examine the distribution of the two values in the CORIS corpus of contemporary Italian (Rossini Favretti et al. 2002) and consider the question of whether they are equally basic interpretations or one of them is derivable from the other. The analysis we propose relies on the idea that the semantic core of "altro" is the relation of non-identity. The D-interpretation and M-interpretation result from the interaction between this semantic core and features of the larger discourse context, with additive and contrastive features playing a major role. Non-identity is introduced in the semantic representation of the sentence irrespective of the syntactic position of "altro", while discourse context—including lexical properties of the noun—determines at what ontological level (whether type or token) non-identity is evaluated. The analysis is cast in the framework of Segmented Discourse Representation Theory (SDRT; Asher and Lascarides 2003), which allows a modular representation of the separate contributions of "altro" and discourse structure
A knowledge-centric model for government-orchestrated digital transformation among the microbusiness sector
FNEGE 1, ABS 4International audienceMost prior public sector digital transformation (DT) research has examined the role of digitalization in improving either the internal operational efficiency of the government or the quality of government service delivery to external stakeholders such as citizens and businesses. Although policy-driven digitalization of specific sectors is key for promoting public value, government’s role in orchestrating extra-government digitalization initiatives to create public value has not been sufficiently investigated. To address this perceptible void in the public sector DT literature, we study a government-led DT program designed to promote digitalization among microbusinesses (MB), a sector that has major economic and social implications. Given the significant role of technical and business knowledge in facilitating enterprise DT, we examine and theorize different knowledge mechanisms through which government policy initiatives can help foster MBs’ DT. Drawing on qualitative data from a series of structured interviews and focus groups with government agents, digital champions, and MB owner-managers involved in the implementation of a government-led DT program for MBs in Ireland, among the different DT stakeholders, we identify three knowledge pathways playing different knowledge-related roles and aiming to facilitate this transformation: top-down, bottom-up, and multidirectional. Each pathway comprises distinct practices. Collectively, the identified knowledge mechanisms in the DT program knowledge ecosystem foster social value creation for both MBs and government stakeholders, and therefore for the nation as a whole. Specifically, sustenance of the DT program is achieved through “initiation” and “instantiation” knowledge routes. Our findings offer theoretical contributions to the literatures on government-led digital transformations, effectiveness of government-led digital initiatives, and digital transformation in the MB sector. Our study also has significant implications for policy and practic
La conférence invitée IC, donnée par Marieke van Erp (KNAW Humanities Cluster) s'intitule Layering Knowledge to Unpack the Layers of Meaning in Historical Texts.
Metaphysical permanencies and variations on Medieval and Renaissance minor beauty
International audienceThis article aims to explore a theme of the metaphysica paupera from the reflections of the Friar Minor Luca Pacioli, highlighting their roots in the Neo-Platonic and Augustinian tradition, but also in some aspects of the Franciscan one. I will show, firstly, how in the early Franciscan environment the idea of minor beauty was progressively developed in relation to the form of life that places poverty at its centre. Secondly, I will outline how, in Bonaventure’s reflections, this idea, initially associated with a practical and moral dimension, is reframed in a theological sense, in terms of evangelical perfection, and in a metaphysical sense, finding its full foundation in the idea of a proportional beauty that establishes a metaphysics of relationship. Finally, I will highlight how both ideas – that of a metaphysics of relationship and a Franciscan matrix – persist in Pacioli, in his mathematization of knowledge, capable of including minor beauty as the metaphysical principle of the world, as well as of all human activities and forms of knowledge
International audienceThis article examines how matter, as a shared subject of study, becomes a fertile ground for encounters between artists and scientists, enabling the emergence of new forms of knowledge. Through the analysis of two devices we have designed—Kiruna and L'harmonie des mondes—we question how the processes of materialising and transforming scientific data into artistic works generate new epistemological paradigms. Our main theoretical contribution is to mobilise Fuller's concept of tensegrity (1961) as an epistemological model: we show how, in art-science articulations, the tensions between scientific rigour and creative freedom do not cancel each other out but stabilise in dynamic configurations that produce meaning. This approach reveals that art-science practices, far from being a contemporary novelty, are part of a long tradition dating back to the chronophotographers of the 19th century and the experimental laboratories of the 20th century. The analysis demonstrates how these tensegral dialogues transform our understanding of disciplinary knowledge and constitute an ecology of practices that redefine the boundaries between art and science.
International audienceIn this article, Pierrick Lefranc explores katajjaq, an Inuit vocal practice alternately perceived as "throat singing," a game, or a shamanic practice, and examines its modes of heritage-making and contemporary uses. The author traces the evolution of ethnomusicological studies dedicated to katajjaq, highlighting its political, epistemic, and aesthetic issues, as well as the tensions between heritage-making and (re)appropriation, in a context of epistemic justice and recognition of Inuit culture. The article highlights the limitations of traditional approaches, which tend to confine this practice within pre-existing categories such as music or playful activity. The author advocates for a living and collaborative investigative method, where katajjaq is studied through "specific usages" and its capacity to build bridges between cultural, social, and artistic worlds. Through concrete examples, such as its integration into contemporary music festivals, the article revisits the relationship between so-called traditional and contemporary practices while exploring the dynamics of cultural appropriation and reappropriation. The author emphasizes the importance of moving beyond logics of domination, identity recognition, and classification to uncover the transformative potential of this practice. In conclusion, the article proposes using katajjaq as a lever to rethink the interactions between research and creation, tradition and innovation, within a perspective of decolonizing knowledge. It invites us to celebrate the transformative power of cultural practices, both aesthetically and socially, and explores how research-creation can fully reveal their potential.
Innovation and Participation in Urban Governance: New Challenges for Local Governments
International audienceThe governance of urban spaces recovered from organized crime is a complex challenge that requires a multidimensional approach, integrating both top-down policies and bottom-up initiatives. Assets confiscated from organized crime, often perceived as symbols of criminal power, offer a unique opportunity for transformation into places of resilience, inclusion and social justice. This study examines the repurposing of these assets in Bari and Lecco, Italy, analyzing the institutional and social obstacles to their sustainable transformation. It highlights the impact of participatory governance models in mobilizing citizens and involving them in the decision-making process. It also explores how public-private cooperation, combined with the use of digital technologies, can strengthen urbanregeneration. This research is part of Track 2 of the “Urban Governance and Citizen Inclusion” program, and questions the governance mechanisms that foster sustainable and inclusive urban planning at local, regional and cross-border levels
