Segmenting a French Meeting Corpus into Elementary Discourse Units

No full text
International audienceDespite growing interest in discourse-related tasks, the limited quantity and diversity of discourse-annotated data remain a major issue. Existing resources are largely based on written corpora, while spoken conversational genres are underrepresented. Although discourse segmentation into elementary discourse units (EDUs) is considered to be nearly solved for canonical written texts, conversational spontaneous speech transcripts present different challenges. In this paper, we introduce a large French corpus of segmented meeting dialogues, including 20 hours of manually transcribed and discourse-annotated conversations, and 80 hours of automatically transcribed and segmented data. We describe our annotation campaign, discuss inter-annotator agreement and segmentation guidelines, and present results from fine-tuning a model for EDU segmentation on this resource.</div

The influence of fine motor skills and executive functions on automatized handwriting

No full text
International audienceWe aimed to explore the understudied area of typical adult handwriting performance, focusing on the potential predictive roles of fine motor skills and executive functions. While the initial stages of handwriting acquisition are assumed to rely upon executive functions and fine motor skills, the two components are no longer viewed as needed in automatized, expert handwriting. We tested this assumption by assessing the contributions of these components to handwriting performance in a group of 33 adult participants. Linear regressions were used to examine whether dexterity, manual praxis, working memory, inhibition and flexibility predict handwriting speed, legibility, and fluency. Results revealed that fine motor skills were a significant contributor to all aspects of handwriting performance. Executive functions also predicted handwriting performance, with a significant effect of flexibility on writing speed and of working memory on legibility. These findings highlight that, even at a high level of expertise and automatization, handwriting remains a skill whose performance depends on executive and fine motor control capacities. They support a predictive coding account of graphomotor control, whereby internal forward and inverse models would support the execution and monitoring of handwriting movements. Our study raises important questions about the extent to which disorders in motor and executive processes can affect handwriting performance and highlights the need for further research into this complex motor behavior

International audienceAgency, as defined by Bandura (2006), is primarily referenced in studies on distance learning in higher education and/or adult education, and it appears much less frequently in those focusing on secondary education. This is partly due to the fact that questions of student engagement, as well as the motivation to learn, inevitably come into conflict with the traditional structure of schooling. Consequently, the issue of student agency seems conceivable only outside the formal school framework. With this assumption in mind, we undertook an analysis of interactions among members of a Facebook group created in 2012 by high school students learning Korean. The findings reveal the strong and sustained participation of students, particularly in Korean, along with exchanges that highlight key elements of self-directed learning. They also show that agency, both individual and collective, manifests in interactional situations tied to the formal aspects of schooling. The space that students freely created and chose outside of their high school Korean classes appears to reveal a framework—or at least a relational dimension (teacher-student)—typical of the school environment, which, while role-played, contributes to student engagement in learning the target language.

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and perceived post-vaccination adverse event: Findings from a cross-sectional survey

International audienceIntroduction: In Quebec, COVID-19 vaccine uptake among adults was high for the first two doses but decreased for the subsequent booster doses. This study assesses the relationships between attitudes towards vaccination and self-reported experience and severity of adverse events following immunization (AEFIs).Methods: A web survey of Quebec adults who received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine was conducted in September 2023. Participants share their level of vaccine hesitancy before vaccination and their experience with AEFIs after receiving a dose. Participants were asked to note the severity of the symptoms they believed were due to vaccination. Intention to receive other vaccines in the future was questioned. Two coders performed a qualitative content analysis on reported AEFIs (N = 3808). Descriptive and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: Among the 8419 vaccinated respondents, 46.7 % reported having experienced AEFIs. Fatigue or malaise (20.7 %), injection site disorder (17.3 %), musculoskeletal pain (11.2 %), headache (11.0 %), and fever (10.6 %) were the most commonly reported, respectively. Respondents who were very hesitant before the COVID-19 vaccine reported more frequently having a severe AEFI compared to those who were not hesitant (25.0 % vs 3.4 % =, p < 0.001). This affirmation stays true when all severity of adverse events are considered (68.7 % vs 36.9 %) (p < 0.001). Younger age (aOR = 0.98), being a female (aOR = 1.31), a higher education level (University degree aOR = 1.56 vs high school or less), being vaccine-hesitant in general (aOR = 1.69 vs non or less hesitant) were significantly associated (p < 0.001) with self-reported AEFIs in multivariate analysis. Self-reported AEFIs that prevented doing activities (aOR = 4.87) and being vaccine-hesitant in general (aOR = 4.94) were significantly associated with reduced intention to receive other vaccines in the future. Conclusion: Vaccine hesitancy could influence self-reported AEFIs and their perceived severity. Transparent and tailored communication explaining AEFIs while emphasizing strategies to mitigate these effects could helpful. Our findings also have implications for pharmacovigilance

No full text
International audienceThe primary aim of this short paper is to provide a synthetic overview of settlement patterns in central-eastern Daunia from the Iron Age to the Roman period, with a particular focus on the transformations in settlements pattern and land use that took place over the centuries. As part of a broader landscape archaeology project in the region, the research aims to identify, also through the use of spatial analysis, the main settlement clusters, their diachronic transformations, and the development of any internal settlement hierarchies.
