The impact of human dispersals and local interactions on the genetic diversity of coastal Papua New Guinea over the past 2,500 years

    No full text
International audienceThe inhabitants of New Guinea and its outlying islands have played an important role in the human history of the Pacific region. Nevertheless, the genetic diversity, particularly of pre-colonial communities, is still understudied. Here we present the ancient genomes of 42 individuals from Papua New Guinea (PNG). The ancient genomic results of individuals from Watom Island (Bismarck Archipelago) and the south and northeastern coasts of PNG are contextualized with new (bio-) archaeological data. The individuals’ accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dates span 2,500 years of human habitation, and our results demonstrate the influences of different dispersal events on the genetic make-up of ancient PNG communities. The oldest individuals show an unadmixed Papuan-related genetic signature, whereas individuals dating from 2,100 years before present carry varying degrees of an East-Asian-related contribution. These results and the inferred admixture dates suggest a centuries-long delay in genetic mixture with local communities after the arrival of populations with Asian ancestry. Two geographically close communities on the South Coast, AMS dated to within the past 540 years, diverge in their genetic profiles, suggesting differences in their interaction spheres involving groups with distinct ancestries. The inferred split time of these communities around 650 years before present coincides with intensified settlement activity and the emergence of regional trade networks

International audienceIn southwestern China, straddling the border between Yunnan and Sichuan, there lives a famous ethnic group, the Na (a.k.a. Mosuo) people. While their customs have become renowned throughout the world, their language has not received comparable attention. This dictionary is designed not only as a tool for academic study but also as a gateway to explore Na culture and language on a solid linguistic basis. It is intended as a resource for the preservation and transmission of this endangered Tibeto-Burman language. The dictionary is suitable for linguists, ethnologists/anthropologists, and readers interested in Tibeto-Burman and minority languages of China. Drawing on years of field research, the authors aim to present the phonology and semantics of Na words, along with some cultural context, in as detailed and meticulous a manner as possible. Three editions are available: the present one, tailored for Chinese-speaking readers; another designed for English-speaking readers (https://shs.hal.science/halshs-01204638); and a third one for French-speaking readers (https://shs.hal.science/halshs-01204645). Successive versions of the dictionary are numbered (the current version is 2.1) and come with two supplementary files: the source file in MDF (Toolbox) format and the entire database in Lexika XML format. The dictionary is part of a broader language documentation and description initiative that encompasses speech materials (including Na narratives, complete with audio recordings, transcriptions, and translations), all available online in open access.

Field research and its methodology are at the heart of the GENgiBRe project's knowledge construction and socialisation objectives. The Methodological Guide therefore constitutes an essential outcome of our project, which reflects our "research-action" approach and our feminist epistemology. The development of this Guide was based on important instruments already proven in the field of feminism and agroecology, such as the Sociobiodiversity Map, the River of Life, the Feminist Social Cartography and the Body-Territory, which were adjusted for the objectives of our project and completed by new instruments. Through this publication, we wish to continue this collective construction, making our Methodological Guide available to communities of researchers with converging interests. Local Languages and Education Amidst Conflict and Federal Aspirations in Myanmar

    No full text
International audienceMyanmar is a country of complex ethnic and linguistic diversity, whose independence was founded upon federal principles and compromises. Language-in-education policy has remained a contentious issue since, especially under successive military juntas that had systematically restricted the use of ethnic minority languages in formal education. In contrast, the reform period from 2011 to 2021 saw slow but notable progress: by 2020, 64 minority languages had been introduced as subjects in government schools, and collaboration between non-state ‘ethnic education providers’—often affiliated with ‘ethnic armed organisations’—and the Ministry of Education was gradually improving. However, the 2021 military coup disrupted these advancements, upending Myanmar’s political landscape and triggering conflicts across the country. The coup has also intensified calls for a fundamental reconfiguration of Myanmar’s federal system, while leading to considerably increasing enrolments in non-state education programs, including both longstanding and newly established systems linked to specific ethnic identities. Drawing on a literature review, historical analysis, examination of the current situation, and three case-studies, this article critically assesses the changing role of local languages in education in post-coup Myanmar, highlighting both emerging opportunities and persistent challenges.
