Advertising Spending, Mood and Level of Product Information on Quality Perception

    No full text
International audienceThe aim of this article is to investigate the influence of advertising spending and mood on consumers' perceived quality, considering scenarios with slight and severe information asymmetry as regards a product's attributes. An experimental study conducted with 385 subjects demonstrated that mood moderates the impact of advertising spending on consumers' perceived quality, specifically when these expenses are at and above the market average. Moreover, the impact of mood on perceived quality was moderated by the level of product information. These results have several theoretical and managerial implications, and may help companies to invest their advertising resources more efficientl

How the Chinese really negotiate: observations from an Australian-Chinese trade negotiation

    No full text
International audiencePrevious research suggests that negotiation style and conflict management strategies are influenced heavily by cultural factors. In the case of the Chinese, findings have largely produced stereotypical views about their behavior, but the authors argue that this position is becoming increasingly blurred in the global economy

Bank Acquisitiveness and Bailouts: Evidence on European Banks during the 2008 Financial Crisis

    No full text
International audienceBank bailouts perhaps share the list of the most widely discussed topics during the debate over the 2008 financial crisis. Banks that were termed strong were trapped in the financial distress in a very short time span and subscribed to the hefty bailouts to come out of this turmoil. It is argued that banks pursue mergers and acquisitions (M&A afterward) strategies to increase their size, which potentially increases their “too-big-to-fail” (TBTF henceforth), associated benefits. Prior to the recent financial crisis, M&A activity facilitated the emergence of few large and structurally complex banking institutions (Weiß et al., 2014) while spearheading a significant phase of consolidation in the banking industry (De Young et al., 2009). This paper investigates whether and how the acquisitiveness of large European banks in the period before crisis relate with their bailout support during the 2008 financial crisis

Alcatel-Lucent falls, Huawei ascends: new product development makes the difference

    No full text
International audienceThis study aims to use the new product development perspective to understand why Alcatel-Lucent have stagnated but Huawei has achieved steady growth showing that important differences exist in the implementation process at strategic and operational levels in the two companies

Bank Deregulation, Consolidation and Stability: Evidence on U.S. M&A Centric Activity

    No full text
International audienceEmploying a difference-in-difference estimation over a sample of 3,447 M&A deals of U.S. banks from 1990 to 2009, we examine the relation between U.S. bank deregulation, M&A centric consolidation and bank stability. Bank deregulation, in terms of its entirety, positively relate with M&A centric consolidation in U.S. However, the evidence on functional- and geographic-diversity aimed deregulatory acts is mixed. Our findings predominantly hold in the pre-crisis period analysis and disappear when the period extends to financial crisis. Lastly, deregulation and consolidation jointly cast negative effects over the stability of U.S. banks. Our findings broadly support the narrative that holds deregulation partly responsible for the 2007 financial calamity

CEO Risk-Taking and Socioemotional Wealth: The Behavioral Agency Model, Family Control, and CEO Option Wealth

    No full text
International audienceWe combine behavioral agency and family business literature to analyze the role of dominant firm principals in constraining the managerial agent’s (CEO’s) response to equity-based pay. Behavioral agency research has made progress in understanding CEO risk behavior in response to equity-based incentives and family firm risk behavior driven by concentrated socioemotional and financial firm-specific risk bearing. However, both literatures have evolved independently, which has limited our understanding of how the risk bearing of agent and principal influences the predictions of the behavioral agency model (BAM). We combine these literatures in order to enhance BAM’s predictive validity with regard to firm risk-taking as a function of both agent and principal risk preferences. Our findings suggest that family principals are more likely than nonfamily principals to constrain CEO risk behavior that is perceived as immoderate (excessively risk averse or excessively risk seeking). We also offer evidence that CEO ties to the family influence the CEO’s response to equity-based incentives. In doing so, we offer refinements to BAM’s formulation and advance our understanding of the unique nature of agency problems within family firms

Asymmetrical buffer allocation in unpaced merging assembly lines

    No full text
International audienceAsymmetrical merging assembly lines are a research area which is rising in prominence due to increasing use in reverse logistics, remanufacturing, and developing economies. This paper studies the performance of reliable, unpaced merging assembly lines with asymmetric buffer storage sizes. Lines are simulated with varying line lengths, mean buffer storage capacities and uneven buffer allocation configurations. Contrary to typical manufacturing expectations, results indicate that production line imbalances do not always result in detrimental performance. Higher throughput and lower average buffer levels, as compared to a balanced merging line, are found where total available buffer capacity is allocated as evenly as possible, and with a higher buffer capacity concentration towards the end of the line. This paper contributes to total production line knowledge by providing performance improvement methods for unpaced merging assembly lines with asymmetrical buffer allocation, and inexpensive or no cost managerial options to increase productivity and resource utilization, and decrease waste, in asymmetrical merging assembly lines

Do creditor rights and information sharing affect the performance of foreign banks?

    No full text
International audienceThis paper examines the effect of host economy creditor rights and information sharing on the profit performance of foreign banks vis-à-vis domestic banks for a global sample of commercial banks over the 2005–2009 period. To this end, we employ the recent foreign bank ownership dataset of Claessens and Van Horen (2014) and measure performance as profit efficiency using the alternative profit function. Results from the Battese and Coelli (1995) stochastic frontier analysis model show that creditor rights exert a positive effect on efficiency that strengthens for foreign banks. On the other hand, information sharing exerts a negative effect on profit efficiency which strengthens for foreign banks. The results for information sharing show some variability across different levels of development of the host economy. Moreover, the transparency of the host economy moderates the effect of creditor rights and information sharing on foreign bank efficiency. We also examine the effect of “institutional distance” in creditor rights and information sharing between the home and host economy on foreign bank efficiency. The effect of creditor rights “institutional distance” on foreign bank efficiency is negative, while it turns positive for information sharing. These findings highlight the importance of strong creditor rights for foreign bank performance and are useful for both regulators in host economies and foreign bank managers
