Institutional means-ends decoupling work in industrial R&D project implementation

    No full text
International audienceManaging goals is a key network management function and is critical in the implementation of industrial R&D projects. In this paper, we explore the implementation of an industrial R&D project, focusing in particular upon the role of means-ends decoupling work to understand how the goals are managed. We combine several data sources in our case research to explore project implementation through an understanding of means-ends decoupling work. We collected in-depth interviews, archival records and field observations within the R&D research setting of an industrial R&D project in the period of 2015 to 2017. Our findings identify three types of means-ends decoupling work in R&D project implementation: ‘work on’ causal complexity, ‘work at’ behavioural invisibility, and ‘work with’ practice multiplicity. In addition, we uncover six dynamic micro-mechanisms that collectively influence the making and nature of means-ends decoupling work and therefore serve to allow for the fluid switching of work as the institutional conditions permit. Overall, our findings have significant implications for understanding means-ends decoupling as a highly skilled network competence for managing R&D project implementation goals

Legitimacy, Particularism and Employee Commitment and Justice

    No full text
International audienceResearch on the effects of particularistic human resource practices (i.e., favoritism and nepotism) on organizationaloutcomes has concentrated on direct negative attitudinal and behavioral responses. By integrating legitimacy and social exchange theories, this paper proposes and tests the idea that legitimacy of particularistic practices might moderate their negative effects on employee attitudes at work. Through a survey of 415 employees across multiple organizational types, we show that the legitimacy of particularism mitigates its negative effects on affective commitment and perceived distributive and procedural justice in non-family-owned businesses only. We discuss implications for theory and practice

Consumer anticipation: antecedents, processes and outcomes

    No full text
International audienceMarketing managers use anticipation as a marketing tool, particularly for new or improved products, services or experiences. Academic interest in consumer anticipation has focused on its outcomes, especially effects on the forthcoming substantive consumption. However, inadequate attention has been given to consumer anticipation as a complex process per se. A systematic review of the literature arrives at a conceptual definition which sees consumer anticipation as a mental process by which consumers consider the physical, experiential, social, emotional or behavioural consumption outcomes that are expected to accrue to the self from a yet to be realised consumption decision or experience. Antecedents of consumer anticipation, its underlying mental processes and consequences are identified and discussed. Frameworks for operationalising consumer anticipation in practical contexts are discussed

The Design Logic of New Business Models: Unveiling Cognitive Foundations of Managerial Reasoning

    No full text
International audienceDespite the importance of managerial reasoning in designing business models to handle exogenous change, little is known about its cognitive foundations. We address this gap with a comparative analysis of how managers rethink business model configurations to provide value in the emerging collaborative consumption economy. As customer behaviors shift from owning to sharing possessions, they challenge firms’ established business model logics. Using data from in‐depth interviews with managers from 22 sharing ventures, we find six cognitive processes to influence reasoning in new business model design. Furthermore, we find that these processes fall into distinctive dimensions of dominant and emerging logics. Ultimately, they combine into a design logic that explains how managerial reasoning results in conceptually different value creation and value capture configurations. Overall, our findings provide insights for theorizing business model design, and they enhance understanding of the foundations of managerial cognition in innovation contexts

Performance and productivity in Islamic and conventional banks: Evidence from the global financial crisis

    No full text
International audienceWe assess the performance and productivity of Islamic and conventional banks using financial ratios, a two- and a four-component meta-frontier Malmquist productivity index (MPI). We focus on the relatively homogenous GCC region over the 2006–2012 period that covers the global financial crisis. We find that Islamic banks exhibit worse cost and profit performance but are on a par with regards to revenue performance compared to the conventional ones. The components of the meta-frontier MPI suggest that the technology of conventional banks improves markedly in years leading to the financial crisis and declines thereafter. Islamic banks show a similar but more muted pattern. By contrast, the pronounced within-Islamic bank group variation in technical efficiency and technology suggests that Islamic banks are quite heterogeneous as a group. Overall, the MPI analysis suggests that the two bank types are more aligned following the global financial crisis. Policy makers should be wary of the important variations within the Islamic banking industry when implementing bank regulations

Centralized and decentralized bitcoin markets: Euro vs USD vs GBP

    No full text
International audienceIn this study, I compared the euro, U.S. dollar, and British pound sterling (GBP) centralized and decentralized bitcoin cryptocurrency markets in terms of return volatility and interdependency. This comparison showed the decentralized bitcoin market has higher volatility and the centralized markets have higher tail dependence regarding returns. The volatility analysis results are contrary to the established leverage reasons that market drops cause volatility. The results demonstrate a higher left tail dependence is in line with the general pattern in “traditional” financial markets which more extreme dependent in downturns. It was also shown trade volume increases as prices decrease, demonstrating participants’ lack of confidence and consensus in a price-jump period

The impact of financial and economic factors on Islamic mutual fund performance: Evidence from multiple fund categories

    No full text
International audienceWe examine the influence of financial, economic, and seasonal factors on the performance of international equity, fixed income, cash, and balanced Islamic mutual funds. We analyze monthly mutual fund return observations on 106 funds over 1997-2019 to investigate exposure to global developed Fama and French (1993, 2015) factors for equity and balanced funds, the three factors of Huij and Derwall (2008) for cash and bond funds, and monthly seasonal effects. Seasonal effects are insignificant in balanced, equity, and cash funds. The Fama and French factors significantly affect the performance of equity and balanced funds, whereas the three factors of Huij and Derwall are important in explaining the performance of cash and fixed income funds for almost over the whole year. Our findings suggest that investors should not be concerned about a potential seasonal effect due to the Ramadan period

Heterogeneous interconnections between precious metals: Evidence from asymmetric and frequency-domain spillover analysis

    No full text
International audienceWe examine the spillover characteristics of returns and volatilities of precious metals: gold, silver, platinum and palladium. We find evidence of homogenous and time varying asymmetric spillovers between the returns and volatilities of the precious metals suggesting similarities in their cyclical relationship with global and local fundamentals. Negative and positive shocks cause the asymmetric spillovers and are more pronounced in times of financial turmoil. The largest transmission of net spillovers is exerted by gold and silver. Silver in the short and long runs and in good and bad market conditions leads the spillover transmission. The pairs silver-gold and palladium-platinum display the largest directional spillovers. Lastly, while palladium and platinum act mainly as spillover receivers, gold and silver act mainly as transmitters of spillovers. Implications of the results are discussed

Virtual reality and its impact on B2B marketing: A value-in-use perspective

    No full text
International audienceThe opportunities virtual reality provides for B2B marketing are increasingly recognized by the trade press in discussions of interesting examples from early adopters like GE, Siemens and Airbus. However, while there is growing recognition of its promise and potential, the specific impact of virtual reality on B2B marketing remains an unexplored research area. This paper provides an early theoretical consideration of the topic by developing a framework and offering propositions that describe the impact of virtual reality on B2B buyer perceptions of value-in-use during the post-purchase stage of the buyer's purchase journey. The paper also considers the moderating impact of several aspects of buyer-supplier relationships, including knowledge complexity, social complexity and task complexity, on virtual reality's contribution to value-in-use perceptions. The discussion provides B2B marketing scholars with several directions for future research and makes several recommendations for B2B marketers interested in leveraging the opportunities presented by virtual reality
