The myth of retail pricing policy for developing organic vegetable markets
International audienceThis paper examines the effects of retail pricing policy on the diffusion process of organic vegetables. Based on a unique dataset consisting of three-year transaction data from an online fresh produce retailer, we modeled the vegetable diffusion process with price and promotion effects, estimated the brand-level generalized Bass model and compared these effects on organic as well as conventional vegetables. Our findings are two major parts. First, only regular price exhibits significant effects on organic vegetable diffusion, while promotion depth or frequency does not. Furthermore, the negative effect of regular price is stronger for organic vegetables than for conventional vegetables
From financial markets to Bitcoin markets: A fresh look at the contagion effect
International audienceThis article studies contagion effects between traditional financial markets, represented by five equity indices and the EUR, USD, GBP, and JPY centralized Bitcoin markets. We apply a regime switching skew-normal model of asset returns that distinguishes between linear and non-linear contagion and also structural breaks in the periods. We find significant contagion effects from financial to Bitcoin markets in terms of both correlation and co-skewness of market returns. Our results also indicate that during crisis periods, risk-averse investors tend to move away from risky Bitcoin markets towards safer financial markets
Sorry, could you repeat the question? Exploring video‐interview recruitment practice in HRM
International audienceHRM has embraced video interviewing through verbal computer‐mediated communication (VCMC) technology. However, empirical research in recruitment remains scant. Drawing on communication theories to analyse data from three studies, we present a conceptual framework explaining VCMC adoption and practice. We argue that VCMC technology has a larger effect on recruitment and selection outcomes than presumed. We broaden signalling theory to video recruitment and posit that interaction effects due to characteristics of the technology and a candidate's personality may affect recruitment outcomes. We also broaden media richness theory by uncovering memory effects arising from multiple interview modes. HR managers should be mindful of these and others limitations highlighted in the study before fully embracing this technology
Influence of Investor and Advisor Big Five Personality Congruence on Futures Trading Behavior
International audienceThis study attempts to assess the influence of investor-advisor personality congruence on the trading behavior of futures investor. This research tested the hypotheses based on the unique data set collected from 408 investor-advisor dyads in the Chinese futures market. Our main data source is the actual trading data of futures investors that we obtained directly from futures brokerage firms in China. We performed Ordered Probit estimation to investigate the influence of investor-advisor personality congruence on trading frequency. Our results provide empirical evidence that investors tend to trade more futures when investor and advisor have congruence on openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness. In contrast, investor-advisor congruence on neuroticism dampens investor's futures trading. This research postulates that individual investors trade differently if they have personality congruence (incongruence) with their advisors. Therefore, it is recommended that policymakers should consider investor-advisor personality congruence to enhance their business performance in the retail investor services industry

External debts, current account balance and exchange rates in emerging countries
International audienceThis article aims to study the relationship between exchange rates, current account balance, and external debts in a sample of 13 emerging countries. We use quarterly data over the period 2000Q1–2016Q4. Based on VECM approach and ARDL model, the main common finding for the selected countries is that for most countries the fluctuation of exchange rates is driven by the accumulation of external debts and/or large current account imbalance, especially in the long-run. While in some countries, only unidirectional causality is pointed out, in other countries, we find bidirectional causality between variables, implying that external debts and current account balance are also influenced by the trend of exchange rates
Exploring consumer mobile payment adoption in the bottom‐of‐the‐pyramid context: A qualitative study
International audienceThis article investigates the factors influencing mobile payment in China's bottom-of-the-pyramid (BOP) market via in-depth interviews with mobile payment users in several geographic regions in China. This article investigates factors influencing mobile payment adoption in the BOP context. The results show that product bundling, aftersale services, interference from other institutions, perceived corporate integrity, and monopoly and information opaqueness can influence mobile payment adoption in the BOP context. The findings will help practitioners understand and improve mobile payment adoption in the BOP context
Formulation and solution of an optimal control problem for industrial project control
International audienceIn this paper, we consider the monitoring and control of industrial projects that are performed by executing different activities within a given time duration. Hereby, it is desired to apply project control to each activity in order to avoid unexpected deviations in the project cost, respecting that the amount and cost of project control needs to be limited. We model the general setting of industrial project control as an optimal control problem with the goal of maximizing the cost reduction (savings) when applying control, while meeting constraints on the control effort. We then prove that it is optimal to apply a constant control effort to each activity during a given time duration. Consequently, we show that the exact optimal control solution can be obtained by nonlinear programming. We illustrate our results by an application example from the construction industry
Social Influence on Future Review Sentiments: An Appraisal-Theoretic View
International audienceGiven the importance of online reviews, as evidenced by extant research, we studied an understudied area of the impact of past reviews on sentiments of future reviews. Past studies in the emergent area of incidence of reviews have investigated the generation of ratings but there seems to be a lacuna in the second dimension of the reviews (i.e., the textual sentiments). Through a controlled experiment (N = 232), we analyzed the impact of past reviews on reviewers’ subsequent texts by using the unique lens of social appraisal theory. We found the influence of the selection of reviews on most e-commerce websites could strongly bias subsequent written review sentiments, and this effect is more pronounced when the reviewer experienced higher disconfirmation. We also observed review writers tend to post extreme reviews in the absence of any benchmark or prior reviews. The study results extend the understanding of users’ reviews under social influence and enhance the appraisal theoretic understanding of review generation
Risk spillovers between large banks and the financial sector: Asymmetric evidence from Europe
International audienceWe investigate the interaction between large banks and the financial sector in Europe using the cross-quantilogram approach of Han et al. (2016). We find evidence of asymmetry in the character of the spillovers between the largest European banks and the European financial sector that are dependent on the market state. Specifically, in bearish markets, the financial sector spillovers on large banks, whereas the reverse occurs during bullish markets. The time-varying analysis confirms the asymmetric character of the network structure
