Numerical modelling of thermoplastic CO2 assisted extrusion foaming: exploring the process-microstructure relationship
International audienceSandwich structures are largely used in lightweight applications thanks to their enhanced strength-to weigh-ratio. Nomex ® and aluminum honeycombs are widely used as core materials due to their mechanical properties, ease of processing along with fire, smoke and toxicity compliancy with standard transportation regulations. However, their lack in sound insulation, damping capabilities and recyclability for Nomex ® honeycombs, represent a major concern. A promising and emerging solution consists in the use of multifunctional thermoplastic foams developed by supercritical CO 2 assisted extrusion foaming technology. This green, non-inflammable solvent/solute can be used as physical blowing agent during an extrusion process, allowing a fine control of foaming process and thus of the final foam microstructure. Several functional properties can be associated to the material: enhanced sounds insulation can be obtained for fine open cells, while closed fine cells provide an enhanced thermal insulation capability [1], the nature of the functionality of the foam clearly resides in the structures of the porosity. Starting from this assumption, it is important to establish a clear processing-microstructure relation, in order to tune the foam for a desired functional property. To follow this, we have decided to develop a numerical model of the CO 2 -assisted extrusion foaming process. To do so, experimental analyses are associated with numerical modelling as shown in Figure 1. The experimental approach, based on Chauvet and Dimos previous work [2,3], consists in three different phases, spanning from the foam manufacturing by CO 2 -assisted extrusion foaming, foam assembly and final vibro-acoustic characterization using a Kundt tube. These experimental phases will then be simulated using existing literature models. A first step, describing bubble nucleation, growth and coalescence will be implemented in Matlab ® using a microscopic approach based on Shafi and Taki models [4,5]. A macroscopic approach will then be implemented in a finite element software, in order to simulate foam assembly and vibro-acoustic response. First experimental results have shown that processing temperature and CO 2 mass fraction strongly influence density, inner cell's structure and material crystallinity. By dropping the extrusion temperature (90 °C), a crystalline foam (crystallinity rate Xc = 24 %) with reduced cells size and diameter is obtained, while at higher extrusion temperature (110°C) results indicate a more expanded and amorphous foam (Xc = 7 %) with higher cell diameter. First simulations based on the Shafi and Taki models are currently under development and will be used to correlate the processingmicrostructure relation during extrusion. The final goal of this work is to establish a clear link between extrusion parameters, foam microstructure after assembly and the vibro-acoustic response of the structure
A Financialized Model for a Risk-Focused Sales and Operations Planning
International audienceSales and Operations Planning (S&OP) is a business process that connects strategic plans of a company with its operational plans. However, achieving the objectives of S&OP becomes increasingly challenging facing the dynamic business environments. The paper proposes a Decision Support System (DSS) for S&OP, with an emphasis on uncertainty management and on the calculation of financial key performance indicators. This research contributes an original two-part proposal focusing on Tactical MRP Calculation, and Financial Valuation within S&OP processes. This paper has two contributions, a new Work-in-Progress calculation method that reflects a detailed financial calculation, and generating financialized scenarios for S&OP

Green Hydrogen Production by Low‐Temperature Membrane‐Engineered Water Electrolyzers, and Regenerative Fuel Cells: Review
International audienceGreen hydrogen (H 2 ) is an essential component of global plans to reduce carbon emissions from hard‐to‐abate industries and heavy transport. However, challenges remain in the highly efficient H 2 production from water electrolysis powered by renewable energies. The sluggish oxygen evolution restrains the H 2 production from water splitting. Rational electrocatalyst designs for highly efficient H 2 production and oxygen evolution are pivotal for water electrolysis. With the development of high‐performance electrolyzers, the scale‐up of H 2 production to an industrial‐level related activity can be achieved. This review summarizes recent advances in water electrolysis such as the proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) and anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). The critical challenges for PEMWE and AEMWE are the high cost of noble‐metal catalysts and their durability, respectively. This review highlights the anode and cathode designs for improving the catalytic performance of electrocatalysts, the electrolyte and membrane engineering for membrane electrode assembly (MEA) optimizations, and stack systems for the most promising electrolyzers in water electrolysis. Besides, the advantages of integrating water electrolyzers, fuel cells (FC), and regenerative fuel cells (RFC) into the hydrogen ecosystem are introduced. Finally, the perspective of electrolyzer designs with superior performance is presented
Experimental and computational study of the polymerization kinetics of a reactive acrylic thermoplastic resin
International audienceA good comprehension of the reaction kinetics during thermoplastic composite manufacturing by liquidreactive processes is crucial to limit the formation of porosities by monomer evaporation. This study focuses on the free-radical polymerization kinetics of Elium® C195E acrylic resin initiated by a mixture of 3 different organic peroxides over a wide range of synthesis temperature. As the polymerization of methyl methacrylate is chemically and diffusionally controlled, a variety of curve shapes were obtained from DSC experiments. To account for the different polymerization regimes, a new hybrid kinetic modelling approach based on mechanistic models has been introduced. Experimental observations have shown that an overall factor including initiator efficiency and termination rate constant can be expressed in terms of conversion and temperature as the contribution of two peaks related to the intensities of the Trommsdorff effect and vitrification. Promising simulation results of this overall factor using Richardstype equations were obtained over a broad range of isothermal synthesis temperature
National audienceRefrigerants are an integral part of refrigeration equipement and can, whether controlled or not, escape into the atmosphere due to leaks in the equipement, fittings, valves, or mishandling. To reduce the contribution of refrigerants to atmospheric warming, it is essential that their GWP (Global Warming Potential) be as low as possible. This means that the atmospheric lifespan of the refrigerant in the atmosphere must be minimized to promote faster degradation. This is the case with next-generation working fluids, such as hydrofluorolefins (HFOs) such as HFO-1234ze(E), which have a low GWP. However, their degradation in the atmosphere by OH radicals produces trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). This article presents a case study based on several academic research works, highlighting the degradation patterns of refrigerants, taking into account hydrolysis, photolysis reactions, and the presence of other pre-existing gaseous compounds in the atmosphere. We will compare the degradation patterns of three types of refrigerants : HFC-134a, HFO-1234yf, and HFO-1234ze(E). This comparison will rely on documented works applying the same experimental protocol, aiming to optimize repeatability and quantify actual TFA emissions.
