Détection de cavités souterraines par thermographie. Modélisation thermique et résultats expérimentaux
International audienceUnderground cavities (e.g. tunnels, containers, ...) are expected to give rise to a thermal contrast at the ground surface, due to the obstruction made by the subsurface air layer to the thermal wave penetrating into the soil. A 2D thermal model was developed to simulate the transient evolution of temperature above and around a cavity under natural radiative and convective conditions to determine the best detection scenario and the associated contrast. Infrared cameras on board a plane and on ground were then used to detect barrels buried two months previously at depths of 7 cm and more.
International audienceCondensation trails (contrails) are the long, linear white clouds that form in the wake of aircraft. Contrail formation depends on various factors such as the composition of the plume and its dispersion. This study will focus on the latter, specifically the impact of engine location on near-field aerodynamics and its effects on jet dilution. By moving aircraft's engines below the wing, the interaction between the engine jet and the wingtip vortex formed in the wake will be altered. These changes in dilution will affect the microphysical processes behind contrail formation, leading to potentially consequential differences in contrails. The effects of engine location changes for a realistic configuration are then investigated by running three RANS simulations with various engine positions. To accurately capture all the important phenomena of this interaction, a mesh adaptation technique is applied. The results of this study show changes in either the dynamics or the kinematics behind the aircraft. Furthermore, the appearance of new vortex structures generated by the engine displacement is observed. These modifications could indeed have a significant impact on the contrail formation
International audienceThe work presented here is part of a broader project whose goal is to develop a new ignition system for combustion chambers based on a plasma generated by microwaves focused by time-reversal. Previous work showed that it is necessary to use multiple short pulses or pulses of longer duration in order to generate a plasma. In this article, we study the impact of the use of multiple pulses and of the length of the pulseson the quality of the spatial and temporal focalization. Preliminary results show a degradation of the focalization.
International audienceSAR time series are powerful assets for forest monitoring. In recent years, they were involved in various classical forest applications such as forest mapping [9] . These applications largely benefited from the advances of Deep Learning, particularly Unsupervised Learning, using Convolutional Autoencoders in applications such as wildfire detection [4] . Not only did purely temporal approaches offer high prediction performance compared to spatiotemporal variants, but the unsupervised autoencoder rivaled its supervised counterparts. The monitoring of forests also involves the detection of under-canopy targets, which could disturb protected environments. The literature mostly relies on classical SAR approaches PolSAR change detection [8] . A recent shift towards the usage of SAR time series displayed promising performance [10] . Thus, to fully exploit the potential of multi-temporal SAR imagery, this paper proposes the usage of unsupervised Deep Learning, particularly the Convolutional Autoencoder, to detect under forest cover objects
One-Way approaches are numerical simulation methods for wave propagation phenomena in a preferred direction, which overcome the limitation (single-mode tracking) of modal methods while ensuring a low computational cost compared to a direct simulation. Although these methods have been used for over fifty years in various fields such as electromagnetism and geophysics, their application in fluid mechanics is more recent, with pioneering work by T. Colonius and A. Towne in 2015.This thesis had a dual objective. Firstly, it aimed to develop One-Way type simulation methods for the Navier-Stokes equations, by extending the methodology proposed in C. Rudel's thesis work for the Euler equations. Subsequently, these methods were used to develop a numerical tool for calculating optimal flow disturbance. All these developments have been tested on a number of representative problems, considering situations of increasing complexity. In particular, the case of a partially lined duct, in the presence of a surface instability, was treated using a domain decomposition method based on One-Way solvers, and compared with both experimental data and results from other numerical solvers. Additionally, the ability of One-Way approaches to propagate boundary layer instabilities and their possible coupling was observed.
Comparison between the trapezoid method and two energy balance models (TSEB and 3SEB) to estimate evapotranspiration of a tree-grass ecosystem
International audienceTree-grass ecosystems (TGEs) comprise nearly 1/6th of Earth's surface in many climates while being biodiversity hotspots. These transitory landscapes dominate global biogeochemical cycles and are one of the most sensitive to global climate change. Indeed, these issues, combined with increasing pressures from agricultural land conversion, livestock grazing, and wildfires, require better characterization of these ecosystems. Actually, the performance of evapotranspiration (ET) remote sensing algorithms tends to have more significant uncertainties in these landscapes due to the poor representation of both (i) the vertical multiple-layered vegetation strata (i.e., overstory with tree/shrub canopies over a herbaceous understory) having distinct phenological variations and bare soil, and (ii) the openness of the horizontally distributed high vegetation, causing inherent pixel heterogeneity at the conventional satellite scale. This study assessed and inter-compared remote sensing-based ET models having different modelling assumptions and data requirements. In this case, we applied an empirical and analytical vegetation index-temperature trapezoid method (VITT) and two different surface energy balance models: the two-source energy balance (TSEB) and three-source energy balance (3SEB). TSEB decouples the energy balance between vegetation and soil, while 3SEB incorporates an extra vegetation layer within the TSEB model structure to better depict ecosystems with multiple vegetation layers, such as TGEs. The VITT method considers as TSEB the decoupling of soil and vegetation, but the latter only in its photosynthetically active state. The study sites are a grass-oak-pine savanna and grassland, two experimental core sites from the Ameriflux network, Tonzi and Vaira sites, located in California, USA. The dataset comprises flux tower data, meteorological data, land cover data, and airborne images from Aviris-Classic (reflectance) and MASTER (temperature) sensors downsampled to 35m spatial resolution. We evaluated the robustness of the methods to estimate ET through key phenological stages (e.g., drying of the grass layer, biomass peaks, and inter-intra annual variations). We analysed how well each method portrays vegetation water stress. The simpler the vegetation structure of the ecosystem, the more similar methods' behaviors and capabilities were. Methods that separate the ET from the different layers were more suitable for assessing the different layer influences for this open and partially covered system. The VITT method raised some limitations as used in a nonconventional way by accounting for two vegetation layers. One may expect better results to be achieved when at least one of the vegetation layers is senescent. Finally, our results can help us understand the possible constraints to face when applying these types of ET algorithms with future satellite missions (TRISHNA, SBG)
