Surface soil moisture remote sensing in the visible–short-wave infrared range: from the laboratory to the field
International audienceFor many applications such as climatology, agriculture, and fire prevention, information regarding soil moisture can prove very relevant. With a large number of spaceborne or airborne sensors, optical remote sensing can be used to assess the surface soil moisture. In this paper, several indices and the MARMIT4SMC method, relying on the multilayer radiative transfer model of soil reflectance (MARMIT) model, were applied to hyperspectral images of a bare soil in the 0.4 to 2.5 μm spectral range, with a high spatial resolution (4.2 cm), and compared them in terms of robustness. Indeed, only a few experiments were performed with images in the field, and the indices were calibrated due to in situ measurements with probes or sample weighing. In our experiment, only a very small area was available for in situ measurements. This motivated the use of laboratory calibration relying on soil samples and a robustness comparison of the involved metrics. MARMIT parameters and a set of indices were computed for each pixel of a couple of images of bare dry and wet soil, respectively. The indices or parameter values were converted to soil moisture content, using a laboratory calibration. Visual and numerical analyses on the moisture content images obtained for each index or method were performed. The soil heterogeneity and the width of the histograms, reaching 20%, show that the step from the laboratory to the field can be relevant only at the scale of a set of pixels: the large discrepancy prevents from a reliable moisture assessment from a single pixel, but a histogram can bring a fairly reliable one. It also leads to the conclusion that MARMIT4SMC and the Normalized Soil Moisture Index, look more robust than the others when going from the laboratory to the field

Space gravimetry missions aim to determine the Earth gravity field with great accuracy. The data gathered are very useful in the sciences of climatology, hydrology or geophysics and to understand global climate change. These missions board state-of-the-art space electrostatic accelerometers displaying a very good sensitivity but also a long-term drift. By combining an electrostatic accelerometer with a very stable cold atom accelerometer, the correction of this drift is possible. Such accelerometers principle relies on atomic interferometry and one of the difficulties of space measurements is the interferometer contrast loss due the satellite rotation around the Earth. In this work, we experimentally implemented a method to limit the impact of rotation of the interferometer with an original setup. The hybrid lab prototype is the combination of an electrostatic accelerometer and a cold atom interferometer. The proof-mass of the electrostatic accelerometer, very well controlled in angle and position, is employed as an actuated retro-reflection mirror for the interferometer. The method tested to limit the rotation impact, consists in the rotation of the retro-reflection mirror to keep the direction of measurement constant during the interferometer. With the rotation compensation method, a contrast recovery up to 99% was demonstrated. Moreover, the impact of such a method on the phase shift bias was also measured and confronted to models. With an accurate model, the phase shift bias can be corrected from the measurement. Lastly, a study of the expected performances of a rotation compensated atom accelerometer boarded on a satellite was conducted. Under the considered hypothesis, the rotation should lead to an acceleration uncertainty of 7 x 10⁻¹⁰ ms⁻ ² for a 1 s interrogation time.

International audienceThe objective of the present paper is to present analyses of Surface Air-Cooled Oil-Cooler (SACOC) heat exchanger devices using exergy-based flow field analysis, which is an innovative assessment method in an industrial environment. In the frame of the DGAC research project IDEFFIX, Safran Aircraft Engines worked conjunctly with ONERA to test FFX (ONERA software for the analysis of CFD flow solutions) on complex industrial configurations. This software is used for the aero-thermal performance assessment of these configurations based on a balance of exergy. This work aims at highlighting the benefit of the exergy approach in addition to classical assessment methodologies (based on a force balance, total pressure losses, ...) and to open the way towards a more innovative and efficient design of heat exchangers and their integration in future civil aircraft engines.L'objectif de ce papier est de présenter des analyses des échangeurs surfaciques d'air/huile (SACOC: Surface Air-Cooled Oil-Cooler) en utilisant une analyse de l'écoulement basée sur l'exergie, ce consiste à une méthode d'évaluation innovante dans un environnement industriel.
International audienceThe family of far-field performance analysis methods developed and used at ONERA over several years require the definition of analysis volumes that contain all the irreversible phenomena present in the flow and are dedicated to subsonic/transonic flows. In supersonic conditions, the shockwaves generated by the presence of an aircraft extend over very large distances. The subsonic/transonic formulation can be used, but at the cost of a meshing artifice which results in a loss of precision that is very difficult to quantify. This paper presents a recent research activity, initiated as part of the IDEFFIX project, concerning the development of a new far-field drag extraction formulation for supersonic flows. It is compatible with the subsonic/transonic formulation, but requires a restricted analysis volume containing only a fraction of the shockwaves. Numerical calculations on a diamond-shaped airfoil show great robustness and very good accuracy of the results
