International audienceThe tropical western Indian Ocean islands are at the southern limit of the East Africa–West Asia Flyway, but their importance for wintering and conservation of Palearctic waders remains poorly understood. Europa Island, a remote coralline island in the southern Mozambique Channel, is a Ramsar site administered since 2005 and managed since 2007 by the Terres australes et antarctiques françaises (TAAF). Although the island is best known for its important seabird assemblages, its importance as a major breeding site for green turtles, and for its native vegetation and undisturbed coral reefs, it also supports a variety of migratory waders from the Palearctic. However, their abundance, seasonal changes in numbers, and trends are poorly documented. This study, conducted from 2016 to 2024, presents the results of monthly and bimonthly wader censuses. Twenty-one species of waders were observed during this period, where the Ruddy Turnstone Arenaria interpres, Eurasian Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus, Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola, Greater Sand Plover Anarhynchus leschenaultii and Common Greenshank Tringa nebularia were the most abundant. Peak numbers averaged 667 ± 103 individuals (range: 557–850) annually, with the central lagoon serving as the principal habitat (593 birds on average during peak months with a range of 194–885). The airstrip was the second most important site, with an average of 443 birds (range: 317–646), the most abundant species being the Ruddy Turnstone, with an average of 432 ± 110 individuals during peak periods. The wintering period of most species was between September and March, with some interspecific variations. Trend analysis indicated stable wader populations over the study period. Furthermore, the average numbers were comparable to counts made in the early 1990s, suggesting a long-term stability. These findings highlight the importance of Europa as a wintering site for palearctic waders in the western Indian Ocean despite its small size and remoteness
Background: After the age of 65, sexuality persists while sexual dysfunctions increase. Yet, this subject is rarely addressed during consultations. This study aims to identify the expectations of Réunionese people over 65 regarding their general practitioner.Method: Qualitative study inspired by grounded theory. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 16 Réunionese participants over the age of 65.Results: Most participants wished their doctor to address sexuality as an ordinary health topic, despite reluctance linked to religious and cultural taboos in Réunion.
International audienceRecent research in the history of mathematics and ethnomathematics has highlighted a slow, collective, multilingual, and multicultural construction of knowledge. The purpose of this presentation is to describe our teacher training program in Mayotte and its effects on teachers' professional perceptions and practices. This program, structured over four semesters of a work-study master's degree, challenges the uniform and universal vision of mathematics education. The study draws on student work, evaluation questionnaires, interviews, and evidence of student work in the classroom.
Progressive drying of the hydrothermal system of La Soufrière de Guadeloupe (French West Indies) revealed by multi-year monitoring of chlorine isotopic composition of fumarolic HCl
International audienceo First long-term use of Cl isotopes in fumaroles for volcano monitoring o Cl isotopes of HCl is an index of partial dissolution of gas into liquid water o Drying of the edifice underlined by coupled δ 37 Cl decrease and [Cl] increase o δ 37 Cl fractionations upon HCl dissolution seems comparable for three volcanoes Abstract Closed-conduit volcanoes develop hydrothermal aquifers where infiltrating water dissolves magmatic gases such as SO₂, HCl, and HF. The extent of this "scrubbing effect" is traditionally tracked using CO₂/SO₂ or CO₂/ST ratios, but these can vary due to secondary processes. Given HCl's high solubility, we assess chlorine isotopic compositions in fumarolic HCl as a potential quantitative tracer of scrubbing. We present three years and a half (January 2018 to May 2021) of δ³⁷Cl and chlorine concentration ([Cl]) data from fumarolic gases at La Soufrière de Guadeloupe, alongside traditional geochemical tracers in volcanology. Our data show strong anticorrelation between δ³⁷Cl and [Cl], suggesting variable extents of HCl dissolution into the hydrothermal aquifer. High δ³⁷Cl values with low [Cl] indicate intense ³⁵Cl loss to the aquifer, while low δ³⁷Cl values with high [Cl] likely reflect primary magmatic signatures with minimal scrubbing. The observed δ³⁷Cl-[Cl] trends suggest a gas-liquid fractionation factor Δg-l between 2.5 and 5 ‰, higher than the expected equilibrium values, implying kinetic fractionation likely due to rapid gas flow preventing isotopic equilibration with the aquifer. Similar δ³⁷Cl-[Cl] trends at Poás (Costa Rica) and Vulcano (Italy) suggest that kinetic fractionation during HCl scrubbing may be widespread. Comparisons with CO₂/CH₄ ratios and the aquifer level suggest that variations in scrubbing at La Soufrière are primarily driven by fluctuating inputs of magmatic fluid. The observed a progressive δ³⁷Cl decrease between 2019 and 2021 likely reflects long-term aquifer drying, consistent with the observed rise in fumarolic temperatures above 150°C since mid-2023.</div
Thermoregulation and Hydration Dynamics in a 160-km Ultra-Endurance Race in a Tropical Environment: A Field Study on 80 Runners
International audiencePurpose : This study investigated thermoregulation and hydration dynamics in 80 runners (33 women, 41.3%; 47 men, 58.7%) during a 160-km ultra-endurance race with 9400 m of elevation gain in a tropical environment, where ambient temperatures ranged from 10.2 °C to 28.3 °C and relative humidity varied between 35 and 100%.Methods : Core temperature (Tcore; measured via ingestible telemetric capsules), body mass, fluid intake, and environmental conditions were recorded at key checkpoints. A linear mixed-effects model was used. Results : Mean Tcore was 37.9 ± 0.3°C (range 36.9–38.8 °C), with a peak of 38.9 ± 0.3 °C (range 38.1–39.96 °C). Faster runners exhibited higher Tcore (r = –0.31, p = 0.024). While mean Tcore was 37.9 ± 0.3 °C in male and 37.8 ± 0.3 °C in female, with peak values of 39.0 ± 0.4 °C and 38.7 ± 0.2 °C, respectively (p < 0.05), sex was not a significant predictor in multivariate analysis. Mean body mass loss was − 4.8%, with 31% of runners losing > 6%, yet showed no correlation with Tcore or performance. Key predictors of Tcore were body mass index (BMI), age, speed, air temperature, humidity, radiation, race cumulative distance, and elevation changes (all p < 0.05).Conclusions : Ultra-endurance runners maintained core temperatures < 40 °C despite significant body mass losses. These findings suggest that substantial body mass change may be a normal physiological adaptation during ultra-endurance running rather than a performance-limiting factor or a risk for hyperthermia. The study highlights the multifactorial nature of thermoregulation in ultra-endurance events and supports the need for individualized hydration strategies based on field data from prolonged, real-world conditions

Teaching Geography in France primary schools using everyday objects and the surrounding environment
International audienceThis article proposes an innovative approach to teaching geography in French primary schools, based on the use of everyday objects and artefacts found in pupils’ immediate environment, both inside and outside the classroom. Focusing on spatial objects and features that are often overlooked because of their ubiquity, this method encourages a new perspective on the surrounding environment. It prompts students to engage with fundamental geographical issues and supports the development of geographical reasoning. The central focus of this process is the activation of language resources, together with the use of tools and methods to collect information and communicate effectively. Finally, this approach promotes a deeper understanding of the world and empowers pupils to take an active role in their local environment when needed

Consensus et critère de vérité en science
International audienceThe notion of consensus has recently taken on great importance in science although its relevance as a judge of the validity of scientific theories lacks any firm foundation. The same applies to simulations of complex processes to which a demonstrative power is attributed. Studying why theories that have now been abandoned were nevertheless accepted for very long periods of time is instructive in this respect. Three examples are particularly demonstrative: the theory of the four elements constituting matter proposed by Empedocles, and then modified by Aristotle, the geocentric world system to which Ptolemy gave its paradigmatic form, and the question of the age of the Earth, which happened to have at last found a rigorous solution at the end of 19th century. The first two examples deal with theories designed in Antiquity that remained unchallenged for more than one millennium — two, in fact, for the former — despite observational evidence that contradicted their foundations.A great explanatory power and, for the Ptolemaic system, the ability to calculate astral movements precisely legated these contradictions to the background. The age of the Earth, on the other hand, was not unanimously agreed upon when four entirely independent methods designed by physicists yielded values ranging from 26 to 100 million years. The credibility of these rigorous approaches gave rise to a consensus before the term was in common usage, in that many naturalists remained convinced of much longer periods. Now, these were eventually proven when the discovery of radioactivity led to the development of true geological chronometers.Of course, the conclusion is that neither unanimity, let alone consensus, nor the conformity of a model with observations constitute criteria for truth. At the root of long-admitted erroneous thesis are methodological flaws and cognitive biases. More than a century ago, geologist T.C. Chamberlin analyzed them particularly well in his theory of multiple hypotheses, which requires, among other things, that no type of explanation be favored a priori. The only way to approach truth is through free, open debate and the questioning of groupthink, the intervention of newcomers to the field being highly desirable from this point of view. Since its beginnings in Greece more than 25 centuries ago, it is indeed through countless controversies that science has gained its solid foundations and ensured its development to the present day.
