International audienceThe Bocard factory in Vialas was an extraction and processing facility for argentiferous galena, a lead sulphide containing around 5/1000 silver. In use from 1781 to 1894, it reached its peak around 1860, with annual production approaching two tonnes of fine silver. The Bocard factory is the only lead and silver processing facility preserved in France. As such preservation, the site was inscribed on the Historical Monuments list. Concurrently with this designation, a preservation and valorisation programme has been initiated. We have numerous archives available, reports from mining engineering students. However, these archives present a significant degree of heterogeneity in terms of periodicity and quality. To gain a better understanding of the site, archaeological investigations have been carried out for several years, including surface mining surveys and archaeological excavations. At the same time, the production of a 3D-model aims to digitally preserve an at-risk site while supporting this scientific study on the scale of the structure, the factory and the valley. This digitisation is based on close-range shots coupled with airborne acquisitions. The main problems are due to the topography of the site. The factory is built in a gorge on four levels, while the concession is spread over 6 km² on a forested mountainside. This topography makes any georeferencing based on RTK or PPK technologies inoperable, while the HD DTMs made by IGN are unusable due to the density of the vegetation. New low-altitude LiDAR coverage will be required. In addition, a handheld imaging laser scanner is required to cover the factory's underground hydraulic networks. This work is intended to support the debate on hydropower management. Because of the high cost of transporting coal, this motive power was the plant's main source of energy. We have a cross-section of the 1,200 m-long race and four plan views of the factory's channels, as well as a series of references in engineers' writing. However, this documentation does not give a clear picture of the organisation of the 14 waterwheels spread over four levels. The first stage of this study will focus on an ore mill excavated in 2023. The compilation of archaeological evidence, engineers' sketches and writing and the three-dimensional “closed” 3D-model will enable us to study the mechanics of the wheel. Mutli-physical finite element modelling will be used to enrich the digital twin with the physical laws that govern it. It will be used to study the energy efficiency of this equipment, and then to start a comparison with the ceruse mill and the stamp mill that came before it.L’usine du Bocard de Vialas en Lozère est un ancien site d’extraction et de transformation de la galène argentifère, un sulfure de plomb contenant environ 5/1000 d’argent.
High precision Al-Mg dating of NWA 15118 challenges a primary anorthositic crust on Vesta
International audienceA lunar-like magma ocean model has been proposed for the asteroid 4 Vesta, where a global primary anorthositic crust formed from buoyant plagioclase floating above complementary diogenitic cumulates. In this hypothesis, the crystallization of the anorthosite should predate the formation of eucrites that are thought to reflect secondary magmatism at the surface of Vesta. To test this model, we present the first 26 Al-26 Mg age of the anorthosite Northwest Africa (NWA) 15118. The NWA 15118 yields a model 26 Al-26 Mg age younger than 4.35 ± 0.03 Myr after CAIs formation. However, eucritic crust formation initiated at ∼2.88 Myr after CAIs, and predating NWA 15118 by over 1.5 Myr, contradicting the proposed global primary anorthositic crust of Vesta formed from a magma ocean. Instead, anorthosite NWA 15118 more plausibly represents a fragment of regional crust formed after the primary crustal differentiation of Vesta, potentially related to late stage basaltic eucrites with negative Eu anomalies or derived from a chemically distinct source
Source Agritrop Cirad (https://agritrop.cirad.fr/616187/) * Autres projets (id;sigle;titre): FOOD/2021/422-432;MAKIS;(EU) Malagasy Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems//International audienceCurrent global challenges require high-impact agricultural innovation processes, relying on a diversity of approaches tailored to the varied needs of innovators and implemented by different actors. These actors are often organizations that progressively strengthen their capacities to respond to emerging demands, operate in new areas, or address emerging issues. At the level of these organizations that support producers, various approaches and tools for capacity strengthening are available, generally based on the development of action plans. However, the underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood and may compromise the effectiveness of these tools. What mechanisms, then, can organizations mobilize to strengthen their capacities to support agricultural innovation? To address this question, we carried out an action-research project involving four organizations that support agricultural innovation in Madagascar. These organizations engaged in a capacity-strengthening process, beginning with a diagnostic that led to an action plan. The action plans outlined the planned activities and expected outcomes in terms of capacity development. They were subsequently complemented by group interviews, which allowed us to examine the underlying mechanisms. The SECI model of knowledge transformation, adapted to organizational capacities, served as both an analytical framework and a tool to guide data collection. The results reveal both common sequences and specific features in each action plan. They allowed us to construct models of capacity-strengthening mechanisms based on the sequence of activities, the scale at which the capacity is expected, and the type of capacity to be reinforced.
Mass Spectrometry for In-Depth Study and Discovery of Marine Bioactive Metabolites
International audienceThis chapter examines the use of mass spectrometry as an effective tool for the detailed study and discovery of bioactive metabolites of marine origin. The seas and oceans are full of organisms that generate a significant variety of natural compounds with pharmacological, cosmetic, and nutraceutical effects. Thanks to its high sensitivity and analytical resolution, mass spectrometry is able to identify, characterize, and quantify these molecules, even when they are found in complex matrices. This chapter discusses the main categories of marine metabolites, methods frequently used in mass spectrometry, and approaches for discovering new bioactive substances. It also highlights contemporary issues and future directions concerning the sustainable use of these natural resources in research and industry
Influence of water table fluctuations and temperature on LNAPL distribution in heterogeneous porous media
International audienceThe remediation of soils and aquifers contaminated by Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) relies on a precise understanding of the LNAPL distribution above the water table. This study investigates the impact of groundwater table fluctuations and temperature change on LNAPL redistribution in a heterogeneous porous medium through laboratory-scale experiments. Experiments were conducted in a two-dimensional tank simulating aquifer condition, using diesel fuel as the LNAPL. The reservoir filled with coarse sand and fine sand low-permeability lenses, reproduced the subsurface heterogeneity. Following LNAPL infiltration from the top, controlled drainage and imbibition cycles simulated water table fluctuations. Experiments were conducted at 10 °C and 20 °C to characterize temperature effects. Fluid behavior was monitored using Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) probes and high-resolution image analysis. TDR measurements provided quantitative dielectric permittivity data, which were converted to saturation profiles. Simultaneously, an image processing approach using the Biodock platform based on artificial intelligence and OpenCV was used to visualize the spatial distribution of LNAPL, water, and air. Applying the two methods allowed integrated methodology and a detailed understanding of the dynamics driving LNAPL migration. Results show that water table fluctuations significantly affect LNAPL redistribution, with each imbibition cycle leading to LNAPL entrapment in the capillary fringe due to wettability changes and capillary barriers. Higher temperature increased the mobility of LNAPL by reducing its viscosity, resulting in more efficient fluid displacement during drainage. This highlights the importance of studying the fate and transport of pollutants in the laboratory under temperature conditions relevant to the aquifers. Low-permeability lenses further modulated LNAPL migration, emphasizing subsurface heterogeneity critical role. Overall, the comprehensive experimental design combining TDR and advanced image analysis provides insight into the mechanisms of LNAPL behavior under dynamic environmental conditions and hints at further improvements for predictive models and remediation strategies in contaminated subsurface environments
Molecular detection of human-derived Jingmenvirus in multiple mosquito species from Yaoundé, Cameroon
International audienceBackgroundTick-borne Jingmenviruses are becoming an increasing arbovirus concern due to the rising number of reported infections in humans and animals, as well as their wide geographic distribution. The involvement of other hematophagous arthropods as vectors of Jingmenviruses is still unknown.MethodsMosquitoes were sampled in two different biotopes in Cameroon (Yaoundé and Garoua) during the rainy and dry seasons in 2022 and 2023. Metatranscriptomics Next Generation Sequencing was conducted using Illumina technology. Viral sequences detection revealed the presence of several contigs with high sequence identity to a human-derived Jingmenvirus (HdJV) previously discovered in plasma from an individual from Yaoundé, Cameroon. A draft viral genome was constituted for each Jingmenvirus-positive sample. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic reconstructions were used to position mosquito-associated viruses within the diversity of Jingmenviruses. Statistical analyses were conducted to estimate the prevalence of infected mosquitoes and the effect of different variables (region, season, year, mosquito species) on Jingmenvirus detection.ResultsHdJV was identified during the dry and the rainy seasons in four species of mosquitoes: Aedes albopictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Culex wansoni from Yaoundé, and Anopheles gambiae s.l. from Garoua. The overall prevalence of HdJV-infected mosquitoes was estimated to be 0.9% [0.4–1.7], and the unique variable significantly associated with HdJV detection was the sampling area: Yaoundé showed the highest prevalence (2.3% [0.9–4.7]) compared with Garoua (0.2% [0.01–0.8]). Mosquito-associated Jingmenviruses shared a high nucleotide identity (between 98.6 and 100% according to the segment) and clustered in the same clade in the phylogenetic analysis, indicating that they belong to the same viral species circulating in different mosquito species. The viral genome shared between 96.4 and 98.9% nucleotide identity with a HdJV detected in the plasma of a patient suffering from febrile illness originating from the same area, suggesting the possible involvement of mosquitoes as vectors of arboviral Jingmenviruses in human infections.ConclusionsThis finding provides new insights into the ecology and transmission dynamics of Jingmenviruses, highlighting mosquitoes as potential vectors, alongside ticks, in the zoonotic transmission of this virus group
Objective: To describe the prenatal ultrasound features of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease associated with biallelic PKD1 mutations and assess their prognostic value to improve prenatal counseling.Method: We conducted a retrospective study at a French expert center for fetal cystic kidney diseases. Twelve fetuses from nine families with confirmed biallelic PKD1 mutations were included. Prenatal ultrasound parameters assessed included kidney size (Z-scores according to Van Vuuren charts), echogenicity, corticomedullary differentiation, cyst characteristics, amniotic fluid volume, and associated anomalies. Postnatal clinical, biological, and imaging data, as well as available fetal pathology findings, were analyzed. Results: All 12 fetuses presented bilateral hyperechogenic nephromegaly exceeding +2 SD, with nine exceeding +8 SD. Cystic changes were present in 9 cases (75%). Oligohydramnios/anamnios was encountered in five cases (42%), associated with poor outcome in all except one. Lethality rate was 50% (Termination n=4, intrauterine death n=1, perinatal death n=1) with significantly higher kidney size in the group with a negative outcome (p=0,012). Histopathological findings in three cases revealed lesions overlapping with ciliopathies, including Meckel-like features and ARPKD autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease)-like patterns. Six children are alive without renal failure to date, although two have hypertension. Genetic analysis revealed substantial heterogeneity, including homozygotes for hypomorphic PKD1 variants (n=4), and compound heterozygotes (n=8). Only two unrelated fetuses carried the same hypomorphic variant. Conclusion: Biallelic PKD1 mutations can cause severe prenatal-onset cystic kidney disease mimicking ARPKD. Kidney size and amniotic fluid volume appear to be the most relevant prognostic indicators to guide prenatal counseling. Targeted genetic testing for PKD1 and PKD2 should be considered even in severe early presentations of hyperechogenic kidneys in order to ensure the detection of potential biallelic mutation, even in the absence of a family history.
Studies of noctilucent clouds from the stratosphere during the 2024 TRANSAT balloon flight
A transatlantic scientific balloon flight (TRANSAT) was conducted between 22 and 26 June 2024. The TRANSAT balloon, operated by the French Space Agency (CNES), floated in the stratosphere at approximately 40 km altitude between Esrange (Sweden) and Baffin Island (Canada) for about 3.8 days. The scientific payload comprised nine instruments, including two from the Swedish Institute of Space Physics: an optical imager for noctilucent cloud (NLC) studies and an infrasound instrument for atmospheric infrasound wave investigations. The NLC imager consisted of three identical visible-range optical cameras, one of which operated successfully throughout the entire flight, capturing thousands of NLC images. The TRANSAT balloon campaign was supported by ground-based lidar measurements and spaceborne observations from the Swedish MATS satellite. Here, we describe the technical characteristics of the balloon experiment and present early results. Nearly continuous observations of NLC were obtained during the entire flight. A localized warm region in the mesopause was identified as the cause of temporary NLC disappearance, while complex NLC structures exhibiting different motions were found to probably result from horizontal wind rotation with altitude within the mesopause region
