Current Account and Real Exchange Rate Changes: The Impact of Trade Openness
This article investigates the impact of trade openness on the relationship between current account and real exchange rates, during episodes of sudden stops and of abrupt exchange rate depreciations. Using data for developed and emerging economies for the period 1970-2011, we nd that more open economies are associated with lower exchange rate depreciations during sudden stops. We also provide evidence that, during abrupt exchange rate depreciation episodes, economies that are more open to trade experience a larger change in current account and trade balance. In other words, our results indicate that improvements in current account and trade balance are accompanied by a smaller exchange rate depreciation in more open economies. These findings are robust to different measures of openness to trade and methodologies of identifying sudden stops and abrupt exchange rate depreciations
Robust location of new housing developments using a choice model
We consider the issue of choosing a subset of locations to construct new housing developments maximizing the satisfaction of potential buyers. The allocation of demands to the selected locations is modeled by a choice model, based on the distance to the location, real-estate prices and incomes. We study two robust counterparts of the optimal location problem, where uncertainty lies on demand volumes for the rst one, and on customer preferences for the second one. In both cases, the parameters subject to uncertainty appear both in the objective function and constraints. The second robust model combines a scenario-based approach with nominal, price-centric and distance-centric scenarios on customers preferences, and an uncertainty budget approach that limits the number of cities that can deviate from the nominal scenario. Computational experiments are conducted on instances of the Paris region to analyze the tractability of the problem and its robust counterparts, and derive insights for the new housing development issue
Economic Development: Is Social Capital Persistent?
URL des Documents de travail : http://centredeconomiesorbonne.univ-paris1.fr/documents-de-travail/Documents de travail du Centre d'Economie de la Sorbonne 2015.02 - ISSN : 1955-611XThis paper, on the one hand, goes a step closer to demonstrate the causality of social capital on economic performance. On the other hand, we confirm a continued role of social capital effects on economic performance in this paper by using a much larger sample, spanning three decades and increasing the scope of countries. This paper is unique in the sense that it contributes to revisiting questions of economic performance, social capital and institutions with a clearly better and updated dataset from the last 28 years building upon existing empirical evidence. We employ a longitudinal analysis (pooled unbalanced multiple cross-section datasets) with fixed effects in this study. Our sample includes both the World Values Survey and European Values Study dating back to the 1980s. Our results are twofold: Firstly, to confirm that trust has a significant positive effect on growth. And more importantly, they have a significant effect on growth for at least 5 years (for growth at 5, 7 and 10 years following a period of trust measure). Secondly, associational activities – another measure in the overarching definitions of social capital, along with institutions, inequality, and education are consistently significant determinants of trust
A Sedução da Comunicação Publicitária Francesa através do Meio
National audiencein this article, the use of Parisian urban furniture as a medium for communicating advertising is analyzed drawing from the perspectives of the audrillardian consumerism and the concept of Junkspace introduced by Rem Koolhaas. Three examples of advertising integrated into the city are presented and analyzed via-à-vis these theoretical frameworks. Three extensions of the Baudrillardian concept of seduction are proposed: i) the seduction through the sign of the familial, offered by the Grands Magasins’ shop-windows, ii) the seduction by integration, reached by the Morris column, and iii) the seduction by the ambition of belonging to a reference-group, incited by a panel-siding. The characterization of the embodiments of Junkspace into contemporary Paris, as well as a reflection on the subtle and spectacular seduction of consumption through the inevitability of everyday in this city, are then advocated. International audiencearole Donada and Yannick Perez discuss about those papers which are featured in International Journal of Automotive Technology and Management, Volume. 15, 2015. Carole Donada and Danielle Attias shed light on the multiple issues that have to be taken into account, and in particular whether the variety of stakeholders involved have the ability to create the necessary radical innovations. Claire Weiller, Tianjiao Shang, Andy Neely and Yongjiang Shi's paper concerned 'Competing and co-existing business models for EV: lessons from international case studies'. It also dealt with the innovation issue and presented four innovative business models that are being developed in China, the USA, and France to support the commercialization of EVs. The third paper was presented by Amandine Chevalier and F. Lantz, who explored the modal choice of French households for their daily trips in order to predict the potential shifts from personal car to shared car. The fourth paper was given by Gustavo A. Marrero, Yannick Perez, Marc Petit and Francisco Javier Ramos-Real. They considered the grid integration and the TCO issues. The closing paper by Petter Haugneland and Hans HaÅvard Kvisle is concerned 'Norwegian electric car user experiences'. It explored a fascinating Norwegian experiment involving real private EVs users' feedback about their cars
Accounting for business combinations: Do purchase price allocations matter?
International audienceThis study investigates the informativeness of purchase price allocations (PPAs) that involve fair value estimation of acquired assets and liabilities after a business combination. Using a model capturing the amount of goodwill expected after the initial announcement of an acquisition, we examine how allocation of abnormal levels of purchase price to goodwill (Abnormal Goodwill) affects stock price reaction surrounding the first disclosure of the PPA in SEC filings, and the acquirer’s future performance. From a sample of 308 economically significant U.S. business combinations completed between 2002 and 2011, we document the following results: (1) Abnormal Goodwill is negatively associated with cumulative abnormal returns surrounding the first disclosure of the PPA, (2) there is a stronger negative reaction to Abnormal Goodwill for acquisitions that were already negatively received by market participants when initially announced than for acquisitions that were initially received positively, (3) the frequency and magnitude of goodwill impairment during the three years following completion of the acquisition increases as Abnormal Goodwill increases, and (4) future performance decreases as Abnormal Goodwill increases. Overall, our findings indicate that Abnormal Goodwill is informative regarding the quality of acquisitions. This study contributes to the debate on the usefulness of PPA
Understanding the relational dynamic capability-building process
International audienceThere is a significant body of research on relational dynamic capabilities, but little is known about how a firm builds these capabilities. Using a longitudinal case study analysis of the French car manufacturer Renault, this research fills that gap. It provides a three-phase sequence model of a relational dynamic capability-building process. Each phase (identifying, building, and integrating) corresponds to a level of strategic intent (from emerging to deliberate) and a set of shaping factors that evolve with the changing environment. These factors are combinations of external triggers associated with macro-economic and industry conditions and internal enablers, including agent skills and missions, dedicated organizational structures, assets, and tools
