    The Paradox of Controversial Innovation: Insights From the Rise of Impressionism

    International audiencehis article considers the strategies developed by a coalition of innovators and supporters to contribute to the consecration of a controversial innovation that transgresses the established codes. It does so through the analysis of Impressionism (1874–1900) that provoked a dramatic shift from classical to modern art. The case study suggests that such consecration can be achieved while claiming the distinctiveness of the controversial innovation, instead of toning it down. The findings reveal the importance of distributed strategies developed by loosely coordinated coalition members. More specifically, they point to simultaneous, and potentially contradictory, strategies: strategies aimed to enforce the distinctiveness of this controversial innovation, and strategies aimed to extend support for it, insisting that contradictory tensions between those strategies can prove useful in achieving consecration. Overall, the article contributes to research on the consecration of controversial innovations, as well as to the literature on framing and brokerage

    Model-Driven reverse engineering of NoSQL property graph databases

    International audience- Most NoSQL databases are schemaless. Although they offer some flexibility, they do not have any knowledge of the database schema, losing the benefits provided by these schemas. It is generally accepted that data modelling can have an impact on performance, consistency, usability, and maintainability. We argue that NoSQL databases need data models that ensure the proper storage and the relevant querying of the data. This paper seeks to present and illustrate an MDA-based approach, allowing us to achieve a reverse engineering of NoSQL property graph databases into an Extended Entity-Relationship schema. The approach is applied to the case of Neo4j graph database. We present an illustrative scenario and evaluate the reverse engineering approach

    Costs of perennial allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma increase with severity and poor disease control

    International audienceBACKGROUND:Perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR) represents a global and public health problem, due to its prevalence, morbidity, and impact on the quality of life. PAR is frequently associated with allergic asthma (AA). Costs of PAR with or without AA are poorly documented.OBJECTIVE:Our study aimed to detail medical resource utilization (MRU) and related direct cost for PAR, with or without concomitant AA, in France.METHODS:Using Electronic Health Records (EHRs), we identified in 2010 two cohorts of PAR patients, based on General Practitioners' diagnoses and prescribing data, with and without concomitant AA. For each patient, the EHRs were linked to corresponding claims data with MRU and costs during years 2011 to 2013. Predefined subgroup analyses were performed according to severity of PAR and level of AA control.RESULTS:The median annual cost reimbursed by social security system for a patient with PAR, and no AA was 159€ in 2013. This varied from 111€ to 188€ depending on PAR severity. For patients with PAR and concomitant AA, the median annual cost varied between 266€ and 375€, and drug treatment accounted for 42-55% of the costs, depending on asthma control.CONCLUSION:This study linking diagnoses from EHRs to claims data collected valid information on PAR management, with or without concomitant AA, and on related costs. There was a clear increase in costs with severity of PAR and control of AA

    Optimal recycling under heterogeneous waste sources and the environmental Kuznets curve

    We investigate how the relationship between economic growth and pollution is affected by the source of pollution: production or consumption. We are interested in polluting waste that cannot be naturally absorbed, but for which recycling efforts aim to avoid massive pollution accumulation with harmful consequences in the long run. We distinguish the cases where recycling efforts are capital-improving or capital-neutral. Based on both environmental and social welfare perspectives, we determine how the interaction between growth and polluting waste accumulation is affected by the source of pollution, i.e., either consumption or production, and by the fact that recycling may or may not act as an income generator, i.e., either capital-improving or capital-neutral recycling efforts. Several new results are extracted regarding optimal recycling policy and the Environmental Kuznets Curve. Beside the latter concern, we show both analytically and numerically that the optimal control of waste through recycling allows to reaching larger (resp., lower) consumption and capital stock levels under consumption-based waste compared to production-based waste while the latter permits to reach lower stocks of waste through lower recycling efforts

    A New General-Purpose Algorithm for Mixed-Integer Bilevel Linear Programs

    International audienceBilevel optimization problems are very challenging optimization models arising in many important practical contexts, including pricing mechanisms in the energy sector, airline and telecommunication industry, transportation networks, critical infrastructure defense, and machine learning. In this paper, we consider bilevel programs with continuous and discrete variables at both levels, with linear objectives and constraints (continuous upper level variables, if any, must not appear in the lower level problem). We propose a general-purpose branch-and-cut exact solution method based on several new classes of valid inequalities, which also exploits a very effective bilevel-specific preprocessing procedure. An extensive computational study is presented to evaluate the performance of various solution methods on a common testbed of more than 800 instances from the literature and 60 randomly generated instances. Our new algorithm consistently outperforms (often by a large margin) alternative state-of-the-art methods from the literature, including methods exploiting problem-specific information for special instance classes. In particular, it solves to optimality more than 300 previously unsolved instances from the literature. To foster research on this challenging topic, our solver is made publicly available online

    New results on the order of functions at infinity

    Recently, new classes of positive and measurable functions, M(ρ) and M(±∞), have been defined in terms of their asymptotic behaviour at infinity, when normalized by a logarithm (Cadena et al., 2015, 2016, 2017). Looking for other suitable normalizing functions than logarithm seems quite natural. It is what is developed in this paper, studying new classes of functions of the type lim x→∞ log U (x)/H(x) = ρ < ∞ for a large class of normalizing functions H. It provides subclasses of M(0) and M(±∞)
