    Nuclear Mechanotransduction in Skeletal Muscle

    No full text
International audienceSkeletal muscle is composed of multinucleated, mature muscle cells (myofibers) responsible for contraction, and a resident pool of mononucleated muscle cell precursors (MCPs), that are maintained in a quiescent state in homeostatic conditions. Skeletal muscle is remarkable in its ability to adapt to mechanical constraints, a property referred as muscle plasticity and mediated by both MCPs and myofibers. An emerging body of literature supports the notion that muscle plasticity is critically dependent upon nuclear mechanotransduction, which is transduction of exterior physical forces into the nucleus to generate a biological response. Mechanical loading induces nuclear deformation, changes in the nuclear lamina organization, chromatin condensation state, and cell signaling, which ultimately impacts myogenic cell fate decisions. This review summarizes contemporary insights into the mechanisms underlying nuclear force transmission in MCPs and myofibers. We discuss how the cytoskeleton and nuclear reorganizations during myogenic differentiation may affect force transmission and nuclear mechanotransduction. We also discuss how to apply these findings in the context of muscular disorders. Finally, we highlight current gaps in knowledge and opportunities for further research in the field

    No full text
International audienceThe aim of this paper is to examine whether willingness to change, generational involvement, perceived technological opportunities, and competitive aggressiveness, in addition to strategic planning, affect the corporate entrepreneurship of family firms in Lebanon. Using a sample of 85 Lebanese family firms, our results suggest that family-business-related characteristics and strategic planning have a positive relationship with corporate entrepreneurship. Our study provides important insights to regulators and practitioners interested in enhancing governance practices in family firms in Lebanon based on the impact of family-business-related characteristics and strategic planning on corporate entrepreneurship. More importantly, our paper helps understand how corporate entrepreneurship in a Middle Eastern country can be affected by willingness to change, generational involvement, perceived technological opportunities, and competitive aggressiveness

    No full text
International audienceBACKGROUND A small proportion of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) patients can adequately control this condition, although achieving the recommended targets for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) levels remains a challenge. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) are new and potent lipid-lowering drugs. However, there is scarce literature on real-world data about their use in patients with FH. MATERIAL AND METHODS We examined the reduction in LDL-c levels from the baseline, after PCSK9i initiation in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia patients referred for lipoprotein apheresis in our regional lipid clinic. The study was conducted from March 2018 to September 2019, the period immediately after PCSK9i reimbursement was available in France. PCSK9i was added on top of the patients' maximal tolerated lipid-lowering regimens. RESULTS The study had 123 patients with heterozygous FH. The mean age of the patients was 59±11 years. The mean baseline LDL-c for all the participants was 277±78 mg/dl. It was 283±81 mg/dl in the PCSK9i monotherapy group (n=83), 247±68 mg/dl in the PCSK9i plus ezetimibe group (n=12), and 264±78 mg/dl in the PCSK9i plus statin and ezetimibe group (n=28). The mean decrease observed in the LDL-c level from baseline was 136±70 mg/dl (n=123), 125±60 mg/dl (n=83), 103±77 mg/dl (n=12), and 175±70 mg/dl (n=28), respectively. CONCLUSIONS An overall reduction of 49.1% from the baseline LDL-c was observed in the heterozygous FH population after PCSK9i initiation in a real-world experience. The group treated with PCSK9i ezetimibe plus statin showed further reduction of their LDL-c levels with a better responder rate, achieving the target 50% reduction in LDL-c from the baseline

    No full text
International audienceBackground: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the interaction between body dissatisfaction and gender on eating disorders (restrained eating, binge eating, orthorexia nervosa, and emotional eating) among a sample of Lebanese adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted between January and May 2018, enrolled 811 participants selected randomly from all Lebanese Mohafazat. The mean age of the participants was 27.6±11.8 years. The majority were females (66.5%), had a high level of education (73.2%), and low income (77.9%). This study used the following scales: body dissatisfaction subscale of the Eating Disorder Inventory-second version, binge eating scale, Dutch restrained eating scale, orthorexia nervosa scale (ORTHO-15 scale), emotional eating scale, perceived stress scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Results: Body dissatisfaction was positively correlated to restrained eating (r=0.293, P<0.001), emotional eating (r=0.073, P=0.042) and binge eating (r=0.250, P<0.001). The interaction between body dissatisfaction and gender was significantly associated with more restrained eating (Beta=0.01, P<0.001) and orthorexia nervosa (Beta=-0.09, P<0.001), but not with emotional (Beta=-0.43, P=0.103) and binge eating (Beta=-0.08, P=0.358). When stratifying the analysis by gender, the results revealed that higher body dissatisfaction was significantly associated with more restrained eating in both genders, but particularly among women. Body dissatisfaction was significantly associated with higher emotional eating in men only and with higher orthorexia nervosa tendencies and behaviors in females only. Conclusion: The interaction between body dissatisfaction and gender was significantly associated with orthorexia nervosa and restrained eating but not with binge or emotional eating. Higher body dissatisfaction was significantly associated with higher restrained eating, more pronounced in women, while it was significantly associated with higher orthorexia tendencies (lower ORTO-15 scores) in women only. Body dissatisfaction was associated with emotional eating in men only

Factors associated with problematic internet use among a large sample of Lebanese adolescents

International audienceBackground: International literature clearly describes factors associated with problematic internet use, including substance dependence, online gambling, social impairment, and functional difficulties. Therefore, it was imperative to assess the extent to which young adolescents in Lebanese schools are affected by problematic internet use (PIU) and the factors associated with it. This large-scale Lebanese survey aims to evaluate the relationship between PIU, depression, and substance use, including alcohol consumption and nicotine use (cigarettes and waterpipe) among adolescents in Lebanese schools. Methods: This cross-sectional study conducted between January and May 2019 assessed internet use through the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), with 'severe internet use' being the threshold for problematic internet use. It enrolled a total of 1810 adolescents aged 14 to 17 from 16 schools from all Lebanese Mohafazat. Results: The majority of the participants had an average internet use 74.8% (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.72-0.76), 20.7% (95% CI: 0.18-0.22) had a frequent internet use, and 4.5% (95% CI: 0.03-0.05) had a severe internet use. Higher alcohol dependence (ß = 0.456, p < 0.001), higher depression (ß = 0.079, p = 0.001), and having separated parents vs. living together (ß = 0.136, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with higher IAT scores. Higher waterpipe dependence (ß =-0.218, p < 0.001) was significantly associated with lower IAT scores. Conclusion: This study, the first and largest of its kind in the Middle East, showed that some psychiatric disorders, such as depression and substance use (smoking and alcohol), are associated with more problematic internet use among Lebanese adolescents. These results could serve as the first step for policymakers towards implementing early awareness campaigns to look at this problem more in-depth and come up with efficient actions to avoid it

    No full text
International audienceBackground: Sleep habits are an important component of a child's health and it is affected by parent-child relationship. Also, child's diet and nutrition appear to be an important factor affecting sleep health. Few studies have addressed the effect of parental emotional disturbance that can leave on children's sleep. Therefore, the objective of our study was to assess the prevalence of sleep disorders in pre-and school-aged children and evaluate its relation with parental mental health and child's nutrition and activity. Methods: A cross-sectional study, conducted between October 2020 and January 2021, which enrolled 402 Lebanese parents from all over Lebanon. The questionnaire was distributed online using the snowball technique. The Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ) was used to assess pediatric sleep behaviors and the Family Nutrition and physical activity questionnaire was used to assess parental behaviors that might predispose children for obesity. Results: A total of 76 (19%) children had sleep disorders (PSQ scores of 8 or more). The multivariable analysis showed that higher paternal depression (Beta = 0.079, p = 0.010), maternal depression (Beta = 0.089, p = 0.001) and higher anxiety in the father (Beta = 0.064, p = 0.021) were significantly associated with higher PSQ scores (worse sleep) in the child. Higher Family Nutrition and Physical Activity Screening Tool scores in the child (Beta =-0.161, p < 0.001) was significantly associated with lower PSQ scores (better sleep). Conclusion: Paternal anxiety and depression, as well as maternal depression, were factors associated with children's sleeping disorders. Future studies are needed to assess parental influence on child's development

High-Rate GNSS Reflectometry for Water Body Detection Using Low Altitude Airborne Carrier

    No full text
International audienceThis airborne experiment studies GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) techniques for the detection of water body surfaces using a low-altitude airborne carrier with high rate (20ms) reflectivity observations. In the context of this work, it is important to detect and fastly reach the area of interest for which the waterbody surfaces are to be scanned. A GNSS-R setup onboard a gyrocopter with reduced size and weight has been developed for this application. The reflected GNSS signals are segmented into stationary parts representing areas with different reflectivities for the detection of water body surfaces. A real flight experimentation has taken place in the North of France obtaining reflections from different surfaces and landforms. We show that our radar technique differentiates different water body surfaces along the flight trajectory with temporal and spatial reso

Antibacterial and Bonding Properties of Universal Adhesive Dental Polymers Doped with Pyrogallol

    No full text
This study investigated the antibacterial activity, bond strength to dentin (SBS), and ultra-morphology of the polymer–dentin interface of experimental adhesive systems doped with pyrogallol (PY), which is a ubiquitous phenolic moiety that is present in flavonoids and polyphenols. A universal adhesive containing 4-META and 10-MDP was used in this study. PY behaves as an antioxidant and anti-cancerogenic agent and it was incorporated into the adhesive at different concentrations (0.5 and 1 wt.%). The antibacterial activity and SBS were analyzed and the results were statistically analyzed. The ultra-morphology of the polymer–dentin interface was assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). At 24 h, a lower antibacterial activity was observed for the control adhesive compared to those with 0.5% and 1% PY. No difference was seen in SBS between the three groups at 24 h. After 6 months, the SBS of the 0.5% PY adhesive was significantly lower than the other tested adhesives. The specimens created with 1% PY adhesive presented a higher bond strength at six months compared with that found at 24 h. No morphological differences were found at the polymer–dentin interfaces of the tested adhesives. Pyrogallol may be incorporated into modern universal adhesive systems to preserve the polymer–dentin bonding interface and confer a certain degree of antibacterial activity

Antimicrobial Activity and Synergy Investigation of Hypericum scabrum Essential Oil with Antifungal Drugs

    No full text
International audienceThe chemical composition of Lebanese Hypericum scabrum essential oil (EO) was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GG-MS). Its antimicrobial activity was evaluated by determining its minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) against a Gram-negative and a Gram-positive bacterium, one yeast, and five dermatophytes. H. scabrum EO was most active on filamentous fungi (MIC values of 32–64 µg/mL). Synergy within the oil was investigated by testing each of the following major components on Trichophyton rubrum: α-pinene, limonene, myrcene, β-pinene and nonane, as well as a reconstructed EO. The antifungal activity of the natural oil could not be reached, meaning that its activity might be due, in part, to minor constituent(s). The interactions between H. scabrum EO and commercially available antifungals were assessed by the checkerboard test. A synergistic effect was revealed in the combination of the EO with amphotericin
