Value and risk dynamics over the innovation cycle
FNEGE 2, ABS 3International audienceThis paper studies investment in intellectual capital and corresponding value and risk dynamics over the innovation cycle. We assume that the innovation cycle consists of three phases, R&D, trial, and market introduction phases. We use a real option investment model to characterize firm value and risk dynamics over the innovation cycle and find that firm value is the sum of the value of assets in place and non-linear option values related to breakthrough, exit, and market introduction options. Firm risk over the innovation cycle is highly non-linear and quite distinct in different phases. During the R&D phase risk is high as the firm faces high operating leverage originating from R&D fixed costs together with technological uncertainty. During the trial phase risk is significantly lower and dominated by option risk to launch the product in the market while after the introduction of the product in the market risk is equivalent to the asset risk of the company. Our model is consistent with the view that positive excess returns of R&D intensive firms are a compensation for risk. Based on this insight we derive several testable predictions
Big data and intrusiveness : marketing issues
Barriers to ecodesign
This document presents the barriers to ecodesign in the LED sector. These barriers have been collected through face-to-face interviews from the four cycLED partners in charge of developing a demonstrator (ONA, RIVA, BRAUN, ETAP), as well as through an online survey of European LED firms. This document also includes a study of women's participation in eco-innovation in the LED sector. It concludes by highlighting the benefits of its findings for cycLED partners as well as for other European LED companies
Business Model in the IS Discipline: A Review and Synthesis of the Literature
International audienceAlthough the Business Model (BM) concept provides a convenient unit for analyzing business practices, BM research in the Information Systems (IS) field reveals that there is a lack of consensus about definitions of the BM concept, and divergences and blurriness about the structure of such models. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive state of the art review of BM research in the IS domain, and so highlight important research avenues. We review the titles and abstracts of 115 papers, examine a subset of 54 significant papers, and code 28 separate definitions of the BM concept. Our work makes three main contributions. First, it up-dates previous literature analysis in BM in the IS discipline. Second, it helps alleviate the fuzziness associated with BM definitions, identifying BM essence, components, characteristics and functions as fundamental dimensions of the BM definition. Third it defines four main BM uses, so enriching research on BMs from different angles
Four scenarios for urban energy coordination: large companies, local authorities, state intervention and cooperative actors
International audiencePressed by the urgent need to mitigate climate change, renewable energy sources are already replacing fossil fuels. Temporary drops in the spot price of electricity now occur in Europe when peak solar and wind output coincides with slack demand. Management of intermittent energy sources and energy storage are consequently crucial issues for the medium term. Two possible routes are of particular importance: on the one hand, funding of generating capacity – via a market instrument yet to be devised – to cover only periods of peak demand and intermittent supply; on the other temporary demand-side management of end-users. These two routes have been studied in detail by energy actors and encouraged by public-sector sponsorship of research. But they have so far made no allowance for local authorities, resident groups and intermediate bodies, despite the fact that they are playing an increasingly important part in deploying renewables and achieving greater energy efficiency. Being more complex than commercial transactions, the relations between the various actors have given rise to sharply divergent analysis by different disciplines. The socio-technical approach – a current of thought in the social sciences – has largely demonstrated the links between technology and society: the effect of institutional regulation on energy governance (Poupeau, 2013) and the deployment of technical systems (Berkhout et al, 2004; Geels and Schot, 2007); the organization of large technical networks and its subsequent dependence paths (Coutard, 2002); the enmeshing of town planning and networks (Dupuy et al, 2008; Rutherford and Coutard, 2014). Our purpose is not to discuss their findings, simply to illustrate the various forms of interdependency between the political, urban, organizational and technological dimensions of energy in a manner accessible to decision-makers and the general public. To achieve this, we propose four scenarios for coordinating energy in an urban environment between now and 2040. The scenarios are based on research carried out as part of the Ecoquartier Nexus Energie project, funded by Ademe and involving a dozen Grenoble researchers specializing in planning, economics, sociology, management and technology. We present here the broad lines of the Ecoquartier Nexus Energie research action and the method used to script and summarize the four scenarios, centring on four pivotal actors: - Large companies, supplying urban energy systems; - Local authorities, steering territorial planning;- The State, acting as the central power framing rules and regulations; and- Cooperative actors, collectives seeking to regain control over housing and energy

FNEGE 4National audienceHow do identities get constructed in new employment models, such as umbrella companies, which blur the borders between salary-employment, independent work and entrepreneurship? This exploratory qualitative study inquiries tracks some trajectories, affects and construction of the self of executive in umbrella companies. It sketches a portrait of professionals inventing their own path to practice their expertise in their ways amid liberal discourses, in need of support, sometimes with doubts and angst. At stake is a possible increase of capabilities, a way of life and a mode of subjectivity.
Banking governance : what's special about Islamic banks ?
International audienceRecent turmoil and financial institutions' failures in the U.S and in the EU have led to a renewed interest in corporate governance. Thus, the ultimate decisions taken to out of the crisis were to review the mechanisms of banking governance. The Islamic banking may use the same governance mechanisms as a conventional bank, in addition to the Shariah boards, the Shariah review unit, the Islamic International Rating Agency (IIRA) and, the Islamic financial Services Board (IFSB)like main bodies of monitoring the Islamic Banking industry. In contrast to the conventional banks, the Islamic banks are based on the active participation of public policy institutions, regulatory and supervisory authorities, and Shariah authorities. These institutions collectively monitor the performance of the firm and its faithfulness and commitment to explicit as well as implicit contracts. Islamic banking designates banking activities, which are conforming to Islamic law (Shariah) and guided by Islamic economics. In particular, Islamic law prohibits usury and payment of interest (Riba), it also prohibits investing in businesses that are considered unlawful. And the competitiveness of many of Islamic products and the PLS principle attract Muslim and non-Muslim investors
