    No full text
Odran Fitzgerald (Class of 2024) was interviewed by Jenna Young via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on July 25, 2024. Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Dallas, but spent a large part of his early childhood living in Togo, West Africa. He received a bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering from SMU. He was originally a Chemistry and Art major, but discovered a passion for environmental engineering. His family moved back to East Dallas, where he completed middle school and high school. He originally learned about SMU when his father became a professor of painting for the university in the 1980’s. During his time as an undergraduate, Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of the powerlifting club and co-founded a club called Earth First. He said he did not experience racism within the engineering department, but did note that there were not a lot of black students in STEM. He said he felt as though the Black community was supported by SMU, especially by groups such as the National Society of Black Engineers. He spent many hours working in research for the Environmental Engineering department. At the time of the interview, he is a graduate student completing his master's in Environmental Engineering at SMU and works as a water waste engineer
