Mario Walker Interview
Mario Walker (Class of 2009) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on December 4, 2024. Mr. Walker received his BA in psychology with a minor in sociology from SMU in 2009. He grew up in Marshall, a small town in east Texas, where he lived with his father and sister. He discussed his early experiences of racism there. He was involved in sports from a young age, and eventually came to SMU on a football scholarship because he realized that he needed to go to college in order to leave his small town. Mr. Walker described feeling very lonely during his early undergraduate years, but also discussed friendships he made through the football team and his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi. He also discussed his experience of culture shock due to the difference in socioeconomic factors between his hometown and SMU. After graduating with his bachelor's degree, Mr. Walker pursued his master's in counseling at SMU's Plano campus. However, upon beginning his practicum, he discovered that counseling wasn't the best fit for him and he decided not to finish the program. Since then, he and his family have moved around Texas for his wife's medical school and residency programs. They have three children, and recently moved back to the DFW area to be near friends
