Dear Jerry,
Pray give my love to sister Eastlake, and tell her there can be no doubt but the writings are good. Can’t you speak to the woman at Trewalder (married to one of our brothers, I think) and persuade her to do justice? Else sister Eastlake must use the law.
If a place could be procured at the Dock, in the best part of the town, then it would be worthwhile to build; that is if we live till spring.

My Dear Sister,
I have not received any letter from you since that of December 11th. I almost wondered that you did not write, and began to fear you had almost forgot me. So that your last gave me joy mixed with grief. I was grieved that you should be under any concern. And yet I could not but feel a very sensible joy at having a fresh proof of your affection.
Never think, my dear friend, that my affection for you can be lessened by the freedom with which you speak or write. This is the most endearing circumstance of all. Pour out your soul without reserve. I shall be the better instructed how to write. And certainly if I observe any thing amiss I will tell you. For I know God has given you a teachable spirit. From me, at least, you can bear anything. For I believe there are not many persons whom you love better.
Do you never lose your sense of the presence of God? Do you always pray? And in everything give thanks? Does he ‘bid you even in sleep go on’? Does the enemy get no advantage over you in dreams? What do you commonly dream of? Are you still sensible of God when you wake at night, or in the morning? Does your soul ascend to him continually?

Malcolm McGuire Interview
No full textMalcolm McGuire (M.A. 2014 ) was interviewed by Valeria Reynosa in the Oral History Studio of Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on March 8, 2022. Mr. McGuire was born in Compton, California in 1978 and grew up in a large blended family, in which he is the youngest of ten children. In his interview he describes his family and childhood in the Los Angeles area. He graduated from high school in 1996 and moved to Texas in 1998 to attend Wiley College, a historically black college in Marshall, Texas, on a partial baseball scholarship. He discusses the differences between Los Angeles and Marshall, which was still partially segregated in the 1990s, and his experiences on the baseball team. Mr. McGuire graduated from Wiley in 2003 with a Bachelor of English degree and a minor in criminal justice. He enrolled in the police academy after graduating and went on to work for the Tyler Police Department for four years. He then relocated to Denton to be closer to his parents, who moved to the area after his father was diagnosed with cancer. He worked for the Dallas County Courthouse and was encouraged to apply for a job at SMU by a district attorney investigator. Mr. McGuire began working for SMU as a police officer in 2008, and joined the Air Force reserves in 2009. He began his graduate course in 2010, but delayed completing it until 2014 due to his deployment. He discusses the support system he had throughout his graduate degree, including his wife and a favorite professor, Dr. John Potter. Mr. McGuire graduated with a Master of Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management degree in 2014. At the time of the interview, he served as the chair of the SMU Black Alumni Board, worked as a special investigator, and lived in Denton with his wife and children

No full textAlisha Filmore (Class of 2013) was interviewed by Camille Davis via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on March 21, 2022. Ms. Filmore was born in New Jersey, but she lived there only a short time before moving to Arlington,TX with her parents and two older brothers. Ms. Filmore spent her grade school years within the Mansfield school system and graduated high school from Summit High School. While at SMU, Ms. Filmore majored in psychology and sports management and was the point guard on the SMU women's basketball team. After graduating from SMU, she played basketball professionally in the European League for 3 years. In 2018, she earned an MBA from Clayton State University with a specialization in Sport Entertainment and Management. At the time of the interview, Ms. Filmore was Director of Development at the University of North Texas, Denton
