Ken Howard Interview
No full textKen Howard (Class of 1984) was interviewed by Brett Fearer in the Oral History Studio of Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on February 22, 2022. Mr. Howard was born in 1962 in Boston, Massachusetts. His family moved to San Francisco, where they lived until he was in high school, at which time they moved to San Antonio, and then to Nashville. In this interview, he discusses his experiences of being gay at SMU and the challenges he faced of being closeted and hiding his identity. While at SMU, Mr. Howard was a member of the Mustang Band and received his degree in Marketing and Psychology. He then went on to receive his MBA from St. Mary's University. Mr. Howard has written multiple books, one being Principles of Computer Science: Java Edition, published by the Kendall Hunt Publishing Company in 2013. He also co-founded Improving, which is a company that specializes in software development and technology consulting. As of the recording of the interview, Mr. Howard is an adjunct faculty member of computer science in the Lyle School of Engineering at SMU
Dalia Quezada Campos Interview
No full textDalia Quezada Campos (Class of 2022) was interviewed by Ruchi Ranganathan via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on June 16, 2022. Ms. Campos was born in Phoenix, Arizona and lived in Mexico throughout her childhood, along with her parents and brother. In her interview, she describes her childhood in Mexico and the culture shock she experienced when her family moved back to the United States. She chose to attend SMU due to its proximity to her parents' home and for the resources and features which were provided by the engineering school, such as the Deason Innovation Gym (DIG). Ms. Campos discusses her experiences in the engineering school, including often being the only Hispanic person or Hispanic woman in her courses. During her time at SMU she participated in the College Hispanic Americans group and worked at DIG, and had several mentors in the Lyle School of Engineering. She graduated with a degree in electrical engineering, and at the time of the interview, worked as an associate electrical engineer
Sriya Reddy Interview
No full textSriya Reddy (Class of 2021) was interviewed by Sarah Khoja in the Oral History Studio of Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on April 20, 2022. Ms. Reddy was born in California and grew up in Plano, Texas. During her interview, she discusses her childhood, family, and experiences within the South Asian community growing up. She also talks about joining her high school newspaper as a junior and how that led to her discovering a passion for journalism. She enrolled at SMU intending to major in pre-med, while also keeping journalism an option. She talks about the culture shock she experienced at the start of her time at SMU, and how involvement with various organizations such as Connect and the Indian Student Association helped her adjust. While at SMU, Ms. Reddy was involved with the Voices of SMU Oral History Project and studied abroad at Oxford. She worked for the Daily Campus student newspaper, and discusses her memories of breaking the news that SMU was closing campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and of interviewing students who were victims of sexual assault while writing about the Title IX office. Ms. Reddy graduated with degrees in journalism, corporate communications, public affairs, and history in 2021, and shortly thereafter was hired as a journalist for the Dallas Morning News. Averie Bishop Interview
No full textAverie Bishop (Class of 2022) was interviewed by Valeria Reynosa in the Oral History Studio in Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on April 14, 2022. Ms. Bishop was born in McKinney, Texas. Her mother emigrated from the Philippines in the 1990s, and her father is a fifth-generation Texan. She attended school in the Prosper Independent School District, where she was the only Asian student until she was in middle school. In her interview, she discusses the isolation she felt as the only Asian student, which was mitigated by her participation in Filipino groups and activities in the Dallas area. Ms. Bishop is a first-generation college student. She initially attended Texas State University majoring in acting. She was influenced by the results of the 2016 election to become a lawyer. She transferred to SMU during her sophomore year with the intent to attend SMU's Dedman Law School after obtaining her undergraduate degree. Ms. Bishop received her bachelor's degree in human rights with a minor in sociology from SMU
