Alan Gudiel Interview
No full textAlan Gudiel (Class of 2015) was interviewed by Jonathan Angulo in the Norwick Center for Digital Solutions at Southern Methodist University on February 9, 2022. Mr. Gudiel was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he lived with his parents and two younger brothers. He discussed how he was involved in soccer clubs and religious organizations to improve his odds when applying to a university. He felt he had no choice but to go out-of-state to attend college because there were no universities in Louisiana with NCAA soccer programs. He decided to attend SMU because they offered the most scholarship money. He described how his roommate and the Connect program allowed him build his network and join a fraternity as well as several multicultural organizations. Mr. Gudiel remembered how CHAS, SHPE, and his fraternity helped him succeed while he navigated Greek culture. He decided to major in mechanical engineering, but found himself working in software development after graduation. He suggested that an Intro to Engineering class be required for engineering students so they can be exposed to all types of engineering. Mr. Gudiel graduated with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, quickly acquiring a job working for an oil and gas software company in Dallas, where he learned how to code. At time of recording, he is married to his college girlfriend and manages his own team at a software development company
