    Anna Musich Interview

    Anna Musich (Class of 2023) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez in the Norwick Center for Digital Solutions on February 23rd, 2024, and majored in Marketing and Spanish at SMU. She was born and adopted in Missouri in 2001, and grew up in a cross-racial household that fostered a connection to her Guatemalan roots. Musich found SMU to be a vibrant and supportive community throughout her four years of attendance, where many of her close friendships were fostered by the organizations she was a part of. During her time as a student, she served as a student ambassador, member of the SMU ballroom dance team, orchestra, and HOLA - the latter of which underwent a name change during her tenure in order to be more inclusive of all Latiné students. Musich spoke about navigating race relations at the university and noted that while she had a mostly positive experience, she was upset by the discriminatory situations other members of her friend group were subject to, such as being pulled over by police and being called slurs by others on campus. She also addressed her pandemic experience and attempts to stay connected to the SMU community during this time

    Isaias Curiel (Class of 2024) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez in the Norwick Center for Digital Solutions on April 5, 2024. He majored in finance. Born in Texas in 2002 as the youngest of five children, Mr. Curiel was raised with a strong Catholic and Mexican cultural background. He attended an early college high school in the Dallas area and started his academic journey at the University of Texas at Arlington during the COVID-19 pandemic before transferring to Southern Methodist University. During his time at SMU, he joined Beta Upsilon Chi, a Christian fraternity, and frequented the campus Catholic Center, where he met many of his friends. In addition to studying finance, Mr. Curiel ran a business with his brother while he was still a student, and recalls that his most memorable experience was getting to study abroad in Europe

    Brianna ‘Bri’ Flores (Class of 2023) was interviewed by Michelle Ma via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on June 14, 2024. She received bachelor’s degrees in Film & Media Arts and Journalism and minored in Arts Management. Ms. Flores grew up in McKinney, Texas as the city first began to develop. She was raised by her grandmother while her parents worked. In middle school, Ms. Flores developed her love for arts and journalism, spending a majority of her extracurriculars in broadcasting and Taekwondo. She chose SMU because the Film Department offered diverse classes, and she was keen on exploring documentary filmmaking. As the first in her family to experience the full college experience, Ms. Flores lived on campus and participated in a variety of organizations. Although being at a PWI has its struggles, Ms. Flores always maintained a positive attitude and was proud that she could be a trailblazer to her community. Ms. Flores currently works as a campaign manager for Odyssey, and one day hopes to be a media producer for any type of film

    Mitul Agrawal (MA 2022) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez via the Zoom internet-based conferencing software on February 20, 2024. Mr. Agrawal talked about his experience growing up in Bhopal, India, and his lifelong desire to work in business and finance. After completing his professional certification in accounting and acquiring a bachelor's in commerce in India, Mr. Agrawal worked in his field for several years before deciding to attend SMU in 2020. His main motivation for attending was his desire to experience the American college experience, as well as a generous financial package offered by SMU to support his studies. Mr. Agrawal described his experience at SMU as life-changing and reminisced about the generosity of the staff and the help he received from the school to complete his MBA in Business Analytics

    Tiffany Jones (Class of 2023) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez via the Zoom internet-based conferencing software on June 15th, 2024. Ms. Jones spoke about her experience and the challenges she faced after being placed in foster care at the age of 15. After her foster sister took her on a tour of multiple schools in Texas, Ms. Jones decided to attend SMU, where she acquired a bachelor’s in both Human Rights and Sociology and became involved with different organizations on campus, such as ABS and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. While working towards her degrees, Ms. Jones got the chance to travel to Poland with the Human Rights department, where they visited several Holocaust sites. Since graduating, she has been preparing to fulfill her lifelong dream of attending law school, having SMU as her first choice

    Ademide Adeoye (JD 2024) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez in the Norwick Center for Digital Solutions on April 30, 2024. Mr. Adeoye was born in Lagos, Nigeria, where he studied law at Babcock University before continuing his legal studies in the U.K. and United States. After studying at Northwestern University in Chicago, he was prompted to apply to SMU and began in the fall of 2021. Mr. Adeoye spoke on the challenges he faced acclimating to U.S. law practices after having been influenced by three legal systems - Nigerian, British, and United States - and the growth he experienced as a result. Having taken many law courses in the past, he had the experience necessary to focus on courses that interested him most and had much praise for his professors, among them Julie Forrester Rogers and Kevin Vela. In addition, he had a very positive experience with the Dedman School of Law's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and credits Dean Erica Fadel with creating such an inviting environment. After graduating, Mr. Adeoye expressed his intent to take the Texas bar and remain practicing in Dallas

    David Karp Interview

    David Karp was interviewed by Jude Folmar in the Oral History Studio of Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on April 16th, 2024. David Karp has been on the faculty of SMU for 49 years and will retire at the end of 2025 after a year of leave. Dr. Karp lived in Denver before moving to SMU. He was in the process of completing an EDD degree before deciding to complete a DMA, which he finished in Boulder, Colorado. Dr. Karp reflected on his experiences at SMU, noting how it differs from larger state schools, such as his daughter’s experience at the University of Texas. Dr. Karp also shared his experiences with notable students over the years, including Condoleezza Rice, who he first taught at the University of Denver in 1971. Dr. Karp also discussed other students he has worked with over the years, including Carleen Graff, Jane Chu, and Kenneth Martin. Dr. Karp told of a formative experience from his time at the Manhattan School of Music playing with the Silvermine String Quartet at the Mannes School of Music where he stepped in for Artur Balsam on the Schubert Trout quintet. Dr. Karp spoke of experiences with students, including students who have struggled and the role of music professors in supporting students in their musical growth. He also described of the challenges of teaching class piano. Dr. Karp also described his approach to practicing, including the importance of recognizing the solitude of practicing and his regular use of the metronome. Dr. Karp also noted how he first became involved in composing pedagogical music for piano students. He told of how he first started writing piano pieces, including his first piece ''Polly Wolly Swings.'' He also discussed his research and articles, including a publication on performance anxiety that was heavily influenced by the work of David Burns. He also shared about his time playing with Gunnar Hansen and his gravitation towards solo work over collaborative work as he prefers the possibilities of improvisation. He also gave his thoughts on serving as a judge in the amateur Van Cliburn Piano Competition. He concluded with the importance of his family and how he has balanced being present for his children with his career
