Eating ads with a Monster: introducing a gamified ad blocker

    No full text
Often, online ads are annoying. Ad blockers are a way to prevent ads from appearing on a web page. As a result, web service providers lose more than 35 billion dollars per year and freely available content on the web is at risk. Taking both interests of web service providers and users into account, we present a gamified ad blocker that allows users to drag a virtual monster over ads to eat them and make them disappear. For each deactivated ad, users receive ad-free time that they can take whenever they want. We report findings from a pre-study, establishing requirements for the implementation of the ad blocker as well as the results of a usability test of our prototype. As a next step, we will release the extension in the Chrome Web Store for upcoming in-the-wild studies

Combining behavior change intentions and user types to select suitable gamification elements for persuasive fitness systems

    No full text
The motivational impact of gamification elements differs substantially across users. To account for these differences, we investigate Hexad user types and behavior change intentions as factors to personalize gamifed, persuasive fitness systems. We conducted an online study (N = 179), measuring the perceived persuasiveness of twelve gamification elements using storyboards. Results show the applicability of the Hexad user type in the Physical Activity domain. Besides replicating correlations between gamification elements and user types, we also found correlations which were hypothesized in literature, but not yet shown. Our main contribution is to show that behavior change intentions influence the perception of gamification elements in general and affect the set of relevant elements for each user type. Since a static set of elements has been suggested for each user type so far, this is an important finding, leading to potentially more effective personalization approaches

"Enable or disable gamification?": analyzing the impact of choice in a gamified image tagging task

    No full text
This paper investigates a simple form of customization: giving users the choice to enable or disable gamification. We present a study (N=77) in the context of image tagging, in which a gamification approach was shown to be effective in previous work. In our case, some participants could enable or disable gamification after they had experienced the task with and without it. Other participants had no choice and did the task with or without game elements. The results indicate that those who are not attracted by the elements can be motivated to tag more through this choice. In contrast, those that like the elements are not affected by it. This suggests that systems should provide the option to disable gamification in the absence of more sophisticated tailoring
