No full textUsing Hexad user types to select suitable gamification elements to encourage healthy eating
No full textGiven that an increasing number of people cultivate poor eating habits, encouraging people to eat healthy is important. One way to motivate people eating healthy is using gamification, i.e. using game elements in a non-game context. Often, a static set of gamification elements is used. However, research suggests that the motivational impact of gamification elements differs substantially across users, demanding personalized approaches. In this paper, we contribute to this by investigating the perception of frequently used gamification elements in the healthy eating domain and correlations to Hexad user types in an online study (N=237). To do so, we created storyboards illustrating these gamification elements and show their comprehensibility in a lab study (N=8). Our results validate and extend previous research in the healthy eating domain, underline the need for personalization and could be used to inform the design of gamified systems for healthy eating
Investigating user-created gamification in an image tagging task
No full textCommonly, gamification is designed by developers and not by end-users. In this paper we investigate an approach where users take control of this process. Firstly, users were asked to describe their own gamification concepts which would motivate them to put more effort into an image tagging task. We selected this task as gamification has already been shown to be effective here in previous work. Based on these descriptions, an implementation was made for each concept and given to the creator. In a between-subjects study (n=71), our approach was compared to a no-gamification condition and two conditions with fixed gamification settings. We found that providing participants with an implementation of their own concept significantly increased the amount of generated tags compared to the other conditions. Although the quality of tags was lower, the number of usable tags remained significantly higher in comparison, suggesting the usefulness of this approach
Globale Konzerne und Ethik
No full textDer vorliegende Sammelband untersucht das Verhalten der global agierenden Konzerne auf ihre Wirkungen auf Dritte und die Umwelt. Verhalten sich die Konzerne unbeaufsichtigt von ihrer nationalen Öffentlichkeit ethisch? Welche Rahmenbedingungen, die ethisches Verhalten sicherstellen, gibt es für diese Konzerne im Ausland? Inwiefern sind die Konzerne für die Schädigungen von Lebewesen und Umwelt im Ausland verantwortlich und was kann man dagegen tun? Steht ethisches Unternehmensverhalten mit dem Unternehmensziel der Gewinnmaximierung im Widerspruch?
Der erste Beitrag lautet "Ansätze einer globalen Ethik und der Handlungsrahmen für globale Konzerne". Gibt es eine globale Ethik? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage werden unter anderem Gerechtigkeitstheorien und der Weltethos von Küng herangezogen. Als ethischer Handlungsrahmen werden sowohl die OECD-Leitlinien als auch die Prinzipien des Global Compacts Orientierungshilfe analysiert, die die Themen Menschenrechte, Gleichberechtigung, Kinderarbeit, Arbeitsnormen und Umwelt berücksichtigen. Die Industrieländer verfolgen eine Entwicklungspolitik, um der Dritten Welt zu helfen. Diese soll dem Verhalten der globalen Konzerne gegenübergestellt werden. Der zweite Beitrag stellt die Grundlagen und Erfahrungen der internationalen Entwicklungspolitik dar. Die Akteure, Ziele und Instrumente der Entwicklungpolitik werden dargestellt und das Ergebnis am Beispiel Afrikas analysiert. Der dritte Beitrag widmet sich dem Weltklima und dem Einfluss der globalen Konzerne. Die Auswirkungen und Folgen des Wandels werden dargestellt und die unethischen Produktionsverfahren der Konzerne erläutert, welche zu einem großen Anteil zum Klimawandel beitragen.
Es folgen weitere Beiträge zur ethischen und erfolgsorientierten Bewertung der Konzeraktivitäten im Ausland. Hier widmet sich Beitrag vier der Lebensmittelindustrie allgemein am Beispiel des Geflügelhandels in Afrika der globalen Verpackungsproblematik und als Unternehmensstudien Nestlé und dem BlueFuture Project. Der fünfte Beitrag bewertet die internationale Unternehmenspolitik der Agrar- und Pharmabranche am Beispiel von Pfizer und Cargill. Beitrag sechs untersucht die Öl- und Rohstoffindustrie und Beitrag sieben die internationale Unternehmenspolitik der Sportartikelindustrie am Beispiel von Nike. Der Sammelband schließt mit dem Fazit des Herausgebers
Stability and interplay between students’ commitment to a study programme and the quality of teaching and their relevance for academic performance in Germany
No full textQuality of teaching and student commitment to their study programme in higher education are considered to be important aspects of the learning process and of achievement behaviour.The focus of the investigation was to analyse the (1) changes in students’ commitment to their study programme and in their perceptions of the quality of teaching, (2) their interactions, and (3) their compound effect on students’ overall achievements in the study programme. We analysed data from 402 students in a
cross-lagged panel design. Results show that the quality of teaching determines both the level of and changes in students’ future commitment to their study programme. Furthermore, students’ commitment to their study programme mediated both their perceptions of the quality of teaching and their later academic achievement

No full textIn this study, we examine the extent to which socio-economic institutions shape young people’s perceptions of
labour market opportunity structures and their employment attitudes (i.e. skills and retraining). Building on the varieties of
capitalism approach, we expect young people (aged 18–35) in coordinated market economies (CMEs) with encompassing
welfare states to regard firm- and industry-specific skills as more important than their peers in liberal market economies
(LMEs). To assess this proposition, we draw on original survey data and compare young people’s employment attitudes
in five European countries: the United Kingdom (UK), which represents a typical liberal market economy, and Austria,
Denmark, Germany and Switzerland as representatives of coordinated market economies. To what extent do different
training regimes in CMEs and LMEs shape individual attitudes towards skill formation? The empirical analysis shows that
young people’s attitudes with regard to the specificity of skills and the willingness to undertake retraining differ
systematically between CME and LME countries and supports our argument that the specific socio-economic institutions
matter
