FamilyFlower: an artifical flower to foster distant family connections
No full textModern, globalized lifestyles make physical separation of family members an inevitable part of life. Due to changes in routines and social roles, remaining connected to distant loved ones is challenging and adversely affects psychological well-being. To support relatedness, we created FamilyFlower, an artificial flower aimed at fostering a connection between remote households by bringing awareness of everyday activities and offering basic expressivity. In its environment, each device detects human presence, movement, sound, and touch. In the remote household, the paired prototype responds by respectively opening the flower bud, actuating the stem, altering the seeds’ color, and dispensing a fragrance. In a 2-week study of deployment between 2 family members, we collected initial impressions of our prototype, and identified key aspects our system could support in future research. From our results, we see that FamilyFlower supports an awareness of ongoing activities in a distant household and built a feeling of connectedness

Wer „trägt“ die Schulsozialarbeit? Empirische Befunde zu Strukturen und Steuerungspotenzialen von Trägern der Schulsozialarbeit in Baden-Württemberg
No full textDer vorliegende Artikel reflektiert Trägerstrukturen in der Schulsozialarbeit vor dem Hintergrund einer Befragung von Schulsozialarbeitsträgern in Baden-Württemberg. Schulsozialarbeit wird theoretisch als Jugendhilfeangebot am Ort Schule und damit in einer Organisation verortet, die primär auf andere Ziele ausgerichtet ist. Der Beitrag zeigt bisherige Leerstellen im Fachdiskurs zu Schulsozialarbeit auf, indem entgegen der vorrangigen Diskussion – Verortung der Trägerschaft im Jugendhilfe- oder Schulsystem – drei Trägertypen innerhalb der Jugendhilfe untersucht werden: Reine Kostenträger, kleine lokale Anstellungsträger sowie große Schulsozialarbeitsträger. Die Analyse der Typen zeigt, dass die Trägerlandschaft in Baden-Württemberg einem Flickenteppich ähnelt, in dem die fachliche Steuerung der Schulsozialarbeit sehr unterschiedlich abgesichert ist. Als Schlussfolgerung leitet der Beitrag ein fachliches Entwicklungspotenzial auf Trägerebene hin zu einem qualifizierten Verständnis der Akteure als Jugendhilfe- und – genauer – Schulsozialarbeitsträger ab, das mit einer verstärkten empirischen In-Blick-Nahme der Organisationsstrukturen von Schulsozialarbeit einhergehen sollte
The Perfect Storm: Bank of Israel’s Forex Interventions, Global Banks’ Limited Risk-Bearing Capacity, Deviations from Covered Interest Parity, and the Impact on the USD/ILS Options Market
No full textUsing confidential daily foreign exchange interventions (FXI) data, we analyze the
intervention episode of the Bank of Israel (BOI) from 2013 to 2019. We find that a purchase of 1 billion US dollars (USD) is associated with a depreciation of the
New Israeli Shekel (ILS) by 0.82%, which is at the upper bound of the estimated
impact in other studies. We show that this effectiveness can partially be explained
by the limited risk-taking capacity of global banks. The (indirect) effect on the
forward rate is smaller – the BOI’s USD purchases have persistently widened the
negative deviation from covered interest parity. Contrary to the findings in earlier
studies, the higher-order moments of the risk-neutral probability distribution of
future spot exchange rates are also affected. The USD purchases shift the whole
distribution towards higher USD/ILS values while reducing crash risk. We also
find that the USD/ILS options market partially anticipates intervention episodes
and prices them in before they occur
