    Personal Exposimeter for Radiation Assessment in Real Environments in the 60-GHz Band

    International audienceFor the first time, a personal exposimeter (PEX) for 60 GHz radiation measurements is presented. The PEX is designed based on numerical simulations and both on-body and on-phantom calibration measurements to determine the antenna aperture and measurement uncertainty of the PEX. The measurement uncertainty of the PEX is quantified in terms of 50 and 95% prediction intervals of its response. A PEX consisting of three nodes (antennas) with VHH (vertical-horizontal-horizontal) polarization results in a 95% prediction interval of 6.6 dB. A 50% prediction interval of 1.3 dB (factor of 1.3) is obtained for measured power densities which is 3.1 dB lower than a single antenna experiment. The uncertainty is 19.7 dB smaller than that of existing commercial exposimeters at lower frequencies (<= 6 GHz)

    A Novel Distributed Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm for the Optimal Power Flow Problem

    International audienceThe distributed optimal power flow problem is addressed. No assumptions on the problem cost function, and network topology are needed to solve the optimization problem. A distributed particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed, based on Deb's rule to handle hard constraints. Moreover, the approach enables to treat a class of distributed optimization problems in which the agents share a common optimization variable. Under mild communication assumptions, agents are only required to know local variables, cost function, and constraints to solve a common optimization problem. A simulation example is provided, based on a 5-bus electric grid

    Computing effectively stabilizing controllers for a class of nnD systems

    International audienceIn this paper, we study the internal stabilizability and internal stabilization problems for multidimensional (nD) systems. Within the fractional representation approach, a multidimen-sional system can be studied by means of matrices with entries in the integral domain of structurally stable rational fractions, namely the ring of rational functions which have no poles in the closed unit polydisc U n = {z = (z 1 ,. .. , z n) ∈ C n | |z 1 | 1,. .. , |z n | 1}. It is known that the internal stabilizability of a multidimensional system can be investigated by studying a certain polynomial ideal I = p 1 ,. .. , p r that can be explicitly described in terms of the transfer matrix of the plant. More precisely the system is stabilizable if and only if V (I) = {z ∈ C n | p 1 (z) = · · · = p r (z) = 0} ∩ U n = ∅. In the present article, we consider the specific class of linear nD systems (which includes the class of 2D systems) for which the ideal I is zero-dimensional, i.e., the p i 's have only a finite number of common complex zeros. We propose effective symbolic-numeric algorithms for testing if V (I) ∩ U n = ∅, as well as for computing, if it exists, a stable polynomial p ∈ I which allows the effective computation of a stabilizing controller. We illustrate our algorithms through an example and finally provide running times of prototype implementations for 2D and 3D systems

    Unbiased Online Recurrent Optimization

    The novel Unbiased Online Recurrent Optimization (UORO) algorithm allows for online learning of general recurrent computational graphs such as recurrent network models. It works in a streaming fashion and avoids backtracking through past activations and inputs. UORO is computationally as costly as Truncated Backpropagation Through Time (truncated BPTT), a widespread algorithm for online learning of recurrent networks. UORO is a modification of NoBackTrack that bypasses the need for model sparsity and makes implementation easy in current deep learning frameworks, even for complex models. Like NoBackTrack, UORO provides unbiased gradient estimates; unbiasedness is the core hypothesis in stochastic gradient descent theory, without which convergence to a local optimum is not guaranteed. On the contrary, truncated BPTT does not provide this property, leading to possible divergence. On synthetic tasks where truncated BPTT is shown to diverge, UORO converges. For instance, when a parameter has a positive short-term but negative long-term influence, truncated BPTT diverges unless the truncation span is very significantly longer than the intrinsic temporal range of the interactions, while UORO performs well thanks to the unbiasedness of its gradients

    A window-based, server-assisted P2P network for VoD services with QoE guarantees

    International audienceIn this paper we describe a P2P network that is designed to support VoD services. This network is based on a video file sharing mechanism that classifies peers according to the window (segment of the video) that they are downloading. Such classification allows identifying peers that are able to share windows among them, so one of our major contributions is the definition of an efficient and easy-to-implement video file sharing mechanism. Considering that cooperation among peers can be insufficient to guarantee an appropriate performance of the system, we also propose that the P2P network must be assisted by upload bandwidth from servers; we complement this idea by defining a highly efficient resources distribution scheme that prioritizes peers that are in windows with resources scarcity (we called it Prioritized Windows Distribution scheme). Given the above described system and on the basis of a fluid model and a Markov chain, we developed a methodology that allows selecting the design parameters values of the network (e. g. windows sizes and minimum servers upload bandwidth), that satisfies a set of target values for QoE parameters (e. g. MOS as a function of initial delay)

    National audienceWho are the French workers? In what conditions do they work and how do they feel at work? Our exploitation of the latest Dares Working Conditions Survey (2013) answers these questions. Several profiles of individuals are thus defined by considering on the one hand their objective working conditions (working hours, remuneration, nuisances ...) and, on the other hand, their feelings about work (well-being, tensions, pride , feeling of being more or less well paid ...). This approach reveals, among other things, that one in five employees are exposed to difficult working conditions. We also note that management plays a key role in the employee's quality of life at work, which deteriorates very strongly when tensions arise with his or her management. We also note that job satisfaction obeys complex rules - that the company does not control all - and that the autonomy of the employee has a positive influence on his quality of life at work, but up to a certain threshold - after which it becomes an additional source of tension.Qui sont les travailleurs français ? Dans quelles conditions travaillent-ils et comment se sentent-ils au travail ? Notre exploitation de la dernière enquête Conditions de travail de la Dares (2013) permet de répondre à ces questions. Plusieurs profils d’individus sont ainsi définis en considérant d’une part leurs conditions de travail objectives (horaires, rémunération, exposition aux nuisances…) et, d’autre part, leur ressenti par rapport au travail (bien-être, tensions, fierté, sentiment d’être plus ou moins bien payé…).Cette approche révèle entre autres qu’un actif occupé sur cinq est exposé à des conditions de travail difficiles. On note également que le management tient un rôle essentiel dans la qualité de vie au travail du salarié, qui se dégrade très fortement lorsque surviennent des tensions avec sa hiérarchie. On remarque aussi que la satisfaction au travail obéit à des règles complexes–que l’entreprise ne maîtrise pas toutes – et que l’autonomie du salarié exerce une influence positive sur sa qualité de vie au travail, mais jusqu'à un certain seuil - après lequel elle se transforme en une source additionnelle de tensions
