Awareness and Actions of University Students toward the SDGs : Relationships with relational mobility and enrollment in environment-related courses

    Get PDF
The primary objective of the present study was to determine the actual awareness and behavior of university students regarding the SDGs in order to elucidate what bottlenecks exist in education for sustainable development from the perspective of the recipients of education. Using eco-awareness and eco-behavior as indicators of educational outcomes, we investigated the effects of university students’ enrollment in environment related courses and relational mobility on eco-awareness and eco-behavior. The results indicated that recognition of the SDGs was high among university students. There were three groups of university students in terms of SDGs/environmental awareness: a high group, a low group, and an in-between group that recognized the importance of the SDGs but had a low sense of responsibility and a low awareness of the benefits of environmentally conscious behavior. The results showed that while students’ attendance at environment-related courses was related to their SDGs/environmental awareness, high SDG/environmental awareness does not necessarily lead to environmentally conscious behavior.departmental bulletin pape

A Case Study on the Effect of Water Environment Learning Program Using the Endangered Species Alga Prasiola japonica YATABE

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to indicate the effectiveness of the environmental learning program using the endangered species alga, Prasiola japonica YATABE (Kawa-nori in Japanese). This water environment learning program uses the Kawa-nori as a subject to enhance awareness of water conservation efforts, promote understanding of objective evaluations of clean water, and learn about the habitats of endangered species, through the cultivation experiments, on-site observation, water quality analysis, aquatic life surveys, and food tasting experiences. Taking this program, it was possible to promote understanding that clean water should not only be judged by visually clear but also by values of water quality components. Participants made specimens of “Shibakawa-nori (local name of Kawa-nori)” and brought them home, which enabled them to recognize and disseminate the fact that there is a local endangered food. In particular, interest in local food was increased through tasting. Understanding of the flow velocities and water depth conditions in which Kawa-nori grows, there was a tendency for knowledge to increase with the progression of school year. School children who took this program discovered a new Kawa-nori habitat in the neighborhood of school suggests that interest in the local water environment was increased and awareness of water environment conservation was heightened by this learning program. This behavior based on the intrinsic motivation of the participants showed the effectiveness of this environmental learning program.departmental bulletin pape

Evaluation of high-dose ascorbic acid administration for oxidative stress reduction in fish model

    Get PDF
High-dose administration of ascorbic acid is expected to be beneficial for various diseases, but the mechanism is still unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of ascorbic acid administration on oxidative stress in a fish model. As a result, there were no differences between administration and control groups, except for a significant decrease in the CAT activity in hepatopancreas. On the other hand, lipid peroxide levels in all tissues were lower compared with control group, suggesting that this experimental system can be used as a model for high-dose ascorbic acid administration. In the future, it will be necessary to optimize the concentration, frequency, and duration of administration, and analyze the effects of the administration on the antioxidant defense capacity of each tissue throughout experimental period to conclude the usefulness of this administration model.departmental bulletin pape
