Field Survey of the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake-induced Deep-seated Landslideson the Right Bank Areas of the Niwan and Saru Rivers

We conducted field surveys at two landslide locations in the study area, based on previously published inventories of deep-seated landslides triggered by the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake. On the right bank area of the Niwan River and on the right bank area of the Saru River, we observed outcrops formed by major- and sub-scarps, and landslide bodies. In the Niwan Area, we initially assumed that the alternating mudstone-sandstone would have slid as an opposite slope landslide because this east-facing slope is situated on the west wing of the NNW-SSE anticline axis, as shown on the 1:50,000 geological map. However, we found that the landslide occurred through dip-slope motion. Therefore, the anticline axis is possibly located further west of the mapped location. Earlier studies indicated that earthquakes prior to 2018 also induced landslides in the study area. Therefore, we also examined the Saru Area, 50 m NE of the Biratori fault, where a deep-seated landslide was triggered by the 2018 Earthquake. Here, we found that the mudstone basement did not slide along the bedding plane but along a joint surface with a strike parallel to that of the Biratori fault. This suggests that shakes and surface deformations by the 2018 Earthquake and earthquakes prior to 2018 have involved with the joint sur-face development.departmental bulletin pape

Behavior of Pseudo-Entropy in the Vicinity of Quantum Phase Transition

    Get PDF
Pseudo-entropy is a newly-defined quantity that was introduced as a natural extension of entanglement entropy of quantum states. We study here the behavior of the pseudo-entropy in the vicinity of the quantum phase transition between the superfluid and Mott-insulator phases for th estandard Bose-Hubbard model on a one-dimensional ring. The numerical results indicate that the difference between the pseudo-entropy of given two quantum states and the averaged entanglement entropies of those two may detect whether the two states belong to the same phase of matter or not.departmental bulletin pape

Recognition and Practice in Otto Gross

    Get PDF
Born in Austria in the late 19th century and living at the turn of the century, Otto Gross (1877-1920) was a psychiatrist, “Lebensreformer(life-reformer),” anarchist, and much more. He was also a close friend of Sigmund Freud, who established psychoanalysis, and his student Carl Gustav Jung and both highly valued Grossʼs deep understanding of psychoanalysis and his abilities. However, as mentioned above, Grossʼs activities went beyond the realm of psychoanalysis. Gross initially studied psychiatry and further developed his work in psychoanalysis and in advocating liberation from the sexual morality based on the institution of marriage in patriarchal societies. His argument, which he based with psychoanalysis, turned out to be somewhat controversial. In this paper, I would like to focus on what role psychology, and psychoanalysis in particular, was supposed to play in Grossʼs problematics, and to see how cognition and practice were related to each other and how they developed in Gross. This will not only shed light on the activities of Gross as an individual, but will also highlight the spiritual and intellectual climate at the turn of the century, both within and outside academia.departmental bulletin pape
